[edit]This article is over-linked, the relevance of links on words like 'habitat' seems silly —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrbray (talk • contribs)

Paul Clark
[edit]Is Paul Clark really deserving of being on the famous people list? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.136.47.100 (talk • contribs)
- He's unquestionably notable because he's an MP. He's not "famous" in the sense of being a household name, so I've changed "famous" to "notable". A bit iffy 00:55, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Article name
[edit]Why is this called "Gillingham, Medway" rather than "Gillingham, Kent" when all the other parts of the Medway Towns are called "x, kent" (eg Rochester, Kent, Chatham, Kent and Rainham, Kent) and even the station is called Gillingham (Kent) railway station. Pickle 14:27, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- These redirections need to be changed Gillingham, Medway is a nonsense (Local Knowledge). Switch the article to Gillingham Kent, and use Gillingham, Kent to redirect. Then edit the disamb. page. Will you do it or should I ? ClemRutter 07:31, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
- The redirection is done- can one of the gurus check that I have done it correctly. ClemRutter 23:01, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Err no, sorry! - You're meant to use the "move" function and move the pages around in a carousel to preserve the edit histories or something, but I'm not sure if I'm clever enough to fix it! Pickle 16:03, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- Its going to take sometime to go thorugh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Whatlinkshere/Gillingham%2C_Kent and fix all the apges that link to "Gillingham, Medway" rather than "Gillingham, Kent" - unless you know a bot that does that! Pickle 16:08, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Chav Culture
[edit]Does this article need some reference to the area's endemic chav culture? Indeed, was it not Gillingham (or Chatham) from which the term 'Chav' originated?
The origin of the word 'Chav' in current usage is contentious to say the least and doesn't really have any place in this article. That said I grew up in the Medway Towns and I know for a fact 'Chavvy' was used as a synonym for 'mate' as in 'Wotcha me ol' chavvy' (Hearty felicitations to you my fine friend on this delightful day) in the early eighties. Prior to the current usage of the word 'Chav' and the many and varied etymologies I was under the impression it came from the Yiddish 'Chavarim' which I believe translates as something along the lines of 'comrade'. Oh well... that's a whole other can of worms.92.40.189.250 (talk) 23:18, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
ipa
[edit]I am amazed at the versatility of ipa, but fail to understand which pronunciation to emulate. The one given is used, but more recently the ing element has been replaced locally by a glottal stop- giving a sound resembling jili:um. Though folk the other side of my-sten would be more likely say it the way shown- but then then they call their town may-stone.--ClemRutter (talk) 14:43, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Gillingham Bandy Club
[edit]So, it's notable, but still shouldn't be mentioned on the page? That's not logical. It is of course of significance, that bandy has come back to England, where it once started. Being the first of its kind in England in a hundred years, Gillingham Bandy Club should really have its own article. A mere mention here is not enough, even if it has to suffice for the moment, as the club is so newly established there's hardly anything to write about it yet. Still, Wikipedia has some articles on suggested and planned sports clubs, even when they never started any activity at all. Bandy Hoppsan (talk) 22:19, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Many people will not know what bandy is, so not particularly notable. Will it still be there in ten years time, or disappear like many other businesses with new leases? It has not proved its durability 10yt. The source material is weak. You clearly are promoting a business or a personal interest. What next, the local chess club?Roger 8 Roger (talk) 22:40, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Should an encyclopedia only be about what people already know? Then what's its point? I am not a promotor of anything. This club is the first of its kind in England for a century. Bandy Hoppsan (talk) 17:09, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- I have no idea what Bandy even is and FWIW it's never been reported on the Kent Online (local news website) nor anywhere else for that matter,
- As for the "promoting" - You obviously have a very strong interest in everything Bandy but some of your edits aren't helpful nor needed,
- Add this again and could be Topic banned from everything-Bandy altogether. –Davey2010Talk 23:03, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- You can't be serious. Threatening to have me blocked for changing the tense of a sentence. Please discuss the issue instead.
- So you don't know what bandy is. Does that mean, Wikipedia should only be about stuff you already know?
- Still, you find this noteable. But you erase it. I fail to see the logic.
- I am not promoting anything. I write about things I find interesting and know something about and I do it because I just enjoy writing about it. Bandy Hoppsan (talk) 17:09, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- Been following this matter, thought I'd chip in with my 2p... The bandy club sounds like a very small undertaking of quite minor significance in the overall scheme of things. If the Kent Messenger does a write-up of the club then I'd be inclined to allow a one- or two-sentence mention in the article. I am slightly intrigued that it's the first bandy club here for over a century though. But as it stands, the club doesn't merit a mention -- sorry. If you do try adding something again without additional back-up I will simply revert your edits. --A bit iffy (talk) 18:14, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- "So you don't know what bandy is. Does that mean, Wikipedia should only be about stuff you already know?" - Nope not at all - Ofcourse this being an encyclopedia it includes a wide range of topics which yes some that I've never heard of however we don't remove or exclude things "because they're not known",
- "Still, you find this noteable. But you erase it. I fail to see the logic." - I did state "FWIW it's never been reported on the Kent Online (local news website) nor anywhere else for that matter," - In short if there's no reliable sources on this then it's not notable for inclusion here,
- Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:17, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- Davey2010, the first time I ever made an edit to this page, you threatened to have me blocked, which isn't very polite. Usually, threats like that are made after someone has made a couple of edits of the same kind and not taken in what others think about it. You don't do very much for promoting Kent hospitality, I'd say. :-)
- The second time, you wrote "As it stands it's notable" in your edit summary, but still took the information away, which doesn't make much sense. But I'll let the article be as it is now. I'm not that interested in some remote area of England where bandy supporters are not welcome. Bandy Hoppsan (talk) 20:32, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- With all due respect you'd kept adding the club before you came here and so I was actually trying not to get you blocked, As for the hospitality - I don't speak for Kent or anywhere else for that matter and so if you have a negative opinion about me than that's obviously your opinion but I don't speak for any part of the world,
- Obviously that should've been "As it stands it's not notable" - There's a difference between not welcoming different topics and topics not being notable .... If you want be a WP:DIVA over it than that's up to you but if you want to return and discuss it like an adult you know where we are. –Davey2010Talk 21:25, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Gillingham Pier
[edit]I think that a mention of the pier and he Medway Queen should be included in here. Especially as the link Gillingham Pier automatically diverts here ! But where - under transport or should a new category be made. Would like thoughts before attempting something myself.DavidAnstiss (talk) 10:09, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
