Life chart

[edit]

Just so your aware I will be moving your nice little charts from country article's to the main demographic article.... as this type of chart information is better handled on the demographics of page that will already have many stats of this nature and in the same format.--Moxy (talk) 23:10, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, Demographics of South Africa, can I ask, can the table be modified so that Period and Life Expectancy all in single column and a column is added that indicates {{increase}} and {{decrease}}? Waddie96 (talk) 07:34, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Demographics of Chad, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bahr el-Ghazal (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

List of countries by number of births

[edit]

I'm reviewing List of countries by number of births. I can't quite figure out how you arrive at the numbers you use. For example, https://population.un.org gives 10.6 births per 1,000 population for the Netherlands for 2015-2020. How do you get to 905? Do you assume a population of approximately 17 million an annual birth rate per 1000 of 10.6 over 5 years? Vexations (talk) 02:38, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Netherlands had 905,000 births in 2015-2020. Go to [1] and click on "interactive data" and then on "Number of births, both sexes combined (thousands)". Here you can find all the data.--Afus199620 (talk) 06:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Human Capital Index requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/bitstream/handle/10986/30498/33252.pdf?sequ. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from Draft:Human Capital Index, a page you have created yourself. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Contest this speedy deletion which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. CMHK

[edit]

You can't use Pepsi data for an unrelated company. Also CMHK is not a listed company but a subsidiary, their data are only partially announced in the annual report of the parent company , which is a listed company. Matthew hk (talk) 13:19, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please use reliable source such as Bloomberg and Reuters and may be primary source such as company annual report. Please don't insert stats. table but write a lengthy year-to-yearly paragraph.

Only if those paragraphs existed, a table may be inserted as supplement. Also, it is not quite encyclopedic for share price, P/E or P/B in wikipedia, an general purpose encyclopedia (wikipedia is not an investment guide). Matthew hk (talk) 07:02, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Microsoft, please cite the actual annual report with page number, not a single web link that direct people to download 10 years of annual reports and look in the whole report to find the data. Matthew hk (talk) 07:55, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please stop destroying all my work!!! I added the right source and all the data is correct!--Afus199620 (talk) 07:57, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:NOSTATS, WP:NOTAGUIDE and WP:V. Please properly cite the figures (actual link of annual report with page number, or news article from WP:reliable source) and please don't just add stats. table. Matthew hk (talk) 08:05, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No one ever complained about my contributions except for you. Could you please show some good will before you destroy two weeks of my work and give me time to ad better sources. And tables are just the best for this kind of stats. Best wishes.--Afus199620 (talk) 08:17, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOSTATS:

Excessive listings of unexplained statistics. Statistics that lack context or explanation can reduce readability and may be confusing; accordingly, statistics should be placed in tables to enhance readability, and articles with statistics should include explanatory text providing context.

Matthew hk (talk) 08:19, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The statistics are in context, make sense and are not confusing. No one complained about them. And why do you think that you are the person making the rules???--Afus199620 (talk) 08:21, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also the same MoS WP:NOSTATS (my emphasis in bold):

To provide , data should be put in context with explanations referenced to independent sources. As explained in § Encyclopedic content above, merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia.

Matthew hk (talk) 08:29, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The sources are clearly independent and correct.--Afus199620 (talk) 08:44, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
WP:Primary source is not independent actually. Despite I suggested you to cite the actual annual report , not a single web links for 10 years of annual reports. However, the ideal citation should be reliable secondary source. Those US listed company are well reported by WSJ, NYTimes, Reuters and Bloomberg, you just did not dig out those news article for your content. Matthew hk (talk) 08:50, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then give me some time for that please. And annual reports by corporations are reliable sources and are used in these articles many times.--Afus199620 (talk) 08:53, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Again, just DON'T use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Investor/annual-reports.aspx (an index page for multi-year reports)
Use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/annualreports/ar2018/downloadcenter (for 2018), and {{cite book}} and |page=/|pages=, or use{{rp}}
Ideally use secondary source such as [1] with primary source as supplement
Write paragraph for the context of those data, table is a supplement . Matthew hk (talk) 09:00, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean with paragraph? Could you please give me an example how you want it to look like.--Afus199620 (talk) 09:02, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You can look at Economy of Russia#Economic history for some insight, you can paraphrase those news article (and cite those article) on what contributed to the revenues increase/decrease of that year of that company (Windows 7 may be for some year? May be the sales of iPhone?) Just need to paraphrase and did not need your own analysis (WP:NOORIGINALRESEARCH) A plain paragraph just to describe the data increase/decrease is a plain WP:routine/WP:trivial content. Matthew hk (talk) 09:21, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that my English is not good enough to write long articles. Could I please do it in form of a table. There are many such articles with tables like in The Walt Disney Company and a 10-year oversight over important stats like in revenue and earnings surely has an encyclopedic value.--Afus199620 (talk) 09:36, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Walt Disney Company is a classic example of WP:NOSTATS. That page may actually updated by staff which is very very not suitable due to WP:paid, or something that should be removed but no one challenged yet (classic WP:OTHERSTUFFEXIST). It may be less trivial for all Disney chairmen in the list in that page are blue-link, but such listing in other companies are usually removed due to excessive red link.

For a paragraph for those financial data, missing one or two years of details is fine. Also those table can be trimmed to just 5 years or 10 years, which reduce the amount to paraphrase from news report of the annual earning. Matthew hk (talk) 09:49, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

November 2018

[edit]

Information icon Please do not add or change content, as you did at Visa Inc., without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Matthew hk (talk) 08:08, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding unsourced content, as you did on Amazon (company). This violates Wikipedia's policy on verifiability. If you continue to do so, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. It should have at least 13 links of individual annual report with page number for 13 annual data (or 13 news articles published in 13 different years), not 3 links for people to download the reports and read the report page by page. Matthew hk (talk) 08:33, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I did not add unsourced content. I want to complain about this.--Afus199620 (talk) 08:45, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of largest companies in Ireland

[edit]

Hi, Have reviewed your new page. A couple of things:

  • 'The figures below are given in billions of US dollars'. I think they are in millions - needs changing.
  • 'All 18 companies from Ireland are listed.' not sure what that last sentence is. Might need removing?

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Thanks for creating List of largest companies in South Africa.

User:Lefcentreright while reviewing this page as a part of our page curation process had the following comments:

Well-written and nicely structured. As a South African myself, it was quite interesting and surprising to see which companies are so big.

Brookfield Asset Management

[edit]

On 2 August 2019 you edited the page Brookfield Asset Management replacing the 2017 income figures with those for 2018; however, you did not update the citation to reflect where you got the 2018 figures. The remaining citation shows the verification for the 2017 figures which you removed. When you edit a Wikipedia article you need to provide sources. You cannot just update figures and ignore existing sources. See Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Citing sources. Let me know if you have any questions. --Bejnar (talk) 22:21, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Honeywell Financials

[edit]
Hello Afus199620, I noticed you added the finance section to the Honeywell article. I am updating the sentence with the most current financial information. This sentence now lives in the 2002–present: Acquisitions and further expansion section. Can you take a look at the updated version of my request?

For the fiscal year 2018, Honeywell reported net income of US$6.765 billion, with an annual revenue of US$41.802 billion, an increase of 3.13% over the previous fiscal cycle. Honeywell's shares traded at over $169 per share, and its market capitalization was valued at over US$120.26 billion in September 2019.[1][2][3][4][5]-Chefmikesf (talk) 22:24, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Very Good. Thank you.--Afus199620 (talk) 13:39, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Afus199620 Due to my COI, I cannot update the sentence. Can you update the information on the Honeywell article?--Chefmikesf (talk) 17:19, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Afus199620Thanks so much! Sorry, I should have been more clear up front. To keep the section succinct, can you remove the sentence with the 2017 data? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chefmikesf (talkcontribs) 17:41, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Afus199620, Do you have interest to make more updates to the Honeywell Wikipedia article? I have some updates in the lead paragraph needing attention on the Talk:Honeywell. They are pretty straight forward, factual updates with sources.--Chefmikesf (talk) 23:53, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Non-reliable source?

[edit]

Hello A: I noticed you added large sections to numerous stock index articles that refer to the website http://www.1stock1.com. That site certainly does not appear to be a reliable source. Can you provide any background or explanation for the additions? Thanks in advance, UnitedStatesian (talk) 01:28, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, You're right. I changed the articles to a different/additional source now.--Afus199620 (talk) 14:12, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Preview – Consolidate – Summarize

[edit]

Hello- Below are a few editing suggestions to make it easier for you and others to collaborate on the encyclopedia. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize your edits:

  • Try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article.
    • The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits.
  • Please remember to explain each edit with an edit summary (box above the "publish changes" button).

Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 22:07, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Please do ask for help if you have trouble grasping any of the above concepts. Eric talk 20:11, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Afus199620, a while back you created the "Finances" section at Verizon Communications. Could you take a look at my Verizon Communications Talk page request to add recently reported financials? As I work for Verizon and have a conflict of interest, I ask others to look at my request and make edits on my behalf. I'm posting a note here in case you did not see my ping at Talk:Verizon Communications. Thank you, VZEric (talk) 17:50, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Tony Xu

[edit]

Hello Afus199620,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Tony Xu for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Notice

The article List of cities in Kagawa Prefecture by population has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The population statistics are on the prefecture's page Kagawa, Japan with better sources. Seems redundant to have this page?

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Cut and paste move

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Past and future population density by country a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:03, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Original research in demographic data

[edit]

Hi, Afus199620. Thanks for creating List of counties of Kenya by GDP. I've removed the last column, "Equivalent country", from the two tables in this article. This column contained a synthesis of data from multiple sources that doesn't exist in any one source; this amounts to prohibited original research. In particular, the column you added makes an assertion about the similarity in GDP between a given Kenyan county, and the GDP of another country in the world. However, no source actually contains an assertion about this comparison or equivalency; the assertion comes only from you in the research you did in multiple sources to find these equivalencies. Please be sure that all information you add to Wikipedia articles is verifiable, and can be backed up with a citation to a reliable source. The equivalence column does not meet this criterion, and thus had to be removed. For more information, see Wikipedia:No original research#Synthesis of published material. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 17:16, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also removed the "Equivalent country" column from the tables at List of Swedish counties by GDP for the same reason. I found another dozen articles which also have the same problem, which will also need to have the same change applied to the tables in them (I didn't check to see if you are a contributor in those articles). There are too many of them for me to fix them all, so any help you could offer would be appreciated. For the list of articles and a more general discussion about this, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries#Assistance requested with SYNTH issue in country demographic articles. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 19:21, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for trying to hold the line over the last few months against several editors (possibly just one, under various IP addresses) trying to reinsert WP:SYNTH data in the form of a comparable country column in List of Iranian provinces by Human Development Index. I've rolled this further back to before the editors became active at the article. Happy editing! Mathglot (talk) 22:29, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Verifiability is a requirement

[edit]

I undid two of your recent changes to demographic articles, where you added 7kb of numeric data to Demographics of Ghana in this edit, and 5kb to Demographics of Cameroon in this edit. You provided a citation to https://population.un.org/wpp/ in both cases, but in neither case does that web page support the changes you made. Wikipedia's policy of WP:Verifiability is a core policy requirement; you may not add massive amounts of data of this type to an article without an "inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution." The term directly supports means that a given piece of material "is present explicitly in the source". I removed your edits in those two cases, because the source you gave "does not support the claim".

I fear that this may be but the tip of a very large iceberg, because in going over some edits of yours recently, it seems that you have used this same source to support addition of numeric data in dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of demographic articles, and it may be that this source does not support any of them. I hope that is not the case. For starters, please stop making any further unsupported changes to numeric data in demographic articles and be sure that all the figures you add or change are directly traceable to a reliable source. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:31, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Mathglot:, you can verify all changes when you download the second Excel file from the World Population Prospects. First click on "Download Data Files", then you can click on the second file called "Complete (estimates and all projection scenarios) (XLSX, 93.06 MB)". See here: https://population.un.org/wpp/Download/Standard/MostUsed/ There you can view and verify demographic data for all countries and territories. Unfortunately, this database is not easy to navigate for beginners. You can also use the Data Portal at the same Website or find the same data here: https://ourworldindata.org/world-population-update-2022#:~:text=The%20world%20population%20will%20pass%208%20billion%20at%20the%20end%20of%202022&text=It%20passed%20its%20last%20milestone,growth%20rate%20continues%20to%20fall.
The World Population Prospects are the most used source for demographic statistics on Wikipedia, and in most cases I just updated existing data with the new 2022 update.--Afus199620 (talk) 08:10, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever happened on the article before you got there is on someone else; but when you made a change and included a citation, then you took ownership of verifiability for the assertions you added. The link you added clearly does not support the content you added. The fact that you can point to other links here on your Talk page is nice, but it is not relevant to the policy of WP:Verifiability. I see that you have reverted the two articles, restoring citations that do not verify the assertions you added. Please add a citation to the article that verifies your assertions that is "present explicitly in the source". The article in its current state does not conform to WP:Verifiability policy. Consider this a formal WP:CHALLENGE. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 10:17, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The indicated source does confirm the WP:Verifiability. You just haven't called up the data that's in the given source. I don't know any other way to link to the data. Do you know how to link from Wikipedia directly to an Excel file? --Afus199620 (talk) 11:50, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, it does not, I checked it. Only the linked files do, and the page you cited could be changed and no longer link to them tomorrow. It would be like linking to "bbc.com" instead of an article linked from bbc's home page; it's fine for today, but tomorrow it may no longer be there; you have to link to the specific BBC article that has the actual text that verifies the information you've placed in the Wikipedia article. Otherwise, it's not verifiable.
If you can access the pop. data on the internet, whether it be a web page, image, Excel file, or whatever, that's because it has a Uniform Resource Locator. Your browser always exposes the URL to you in the browser address bar. Since you know how to get to the Excel file, all you have to do to get its URL is to copy it out of the address bar. Since it is a web resource, linking to it is no different than linking to any external link in a reference, such as linking the title of a book to a Google books url for that title. Or, were you asking that once you have the resource, you're not sure how to cite it, whether in plain text, or using one of the templates? Mathglot (talk) 08:11, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find where the URL is in the Excel file. I don't know where to find the address bar in the Excel file. Therefore, I can't link it.--Afus199620 (talk) 10:02, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When you click it, it's there. But give me a Wikipedia article name, the citation number or link to it, and the name (anchor, label, linktext) of the Excel file as it appears on that page, and I will explain how to get the link to it. (please Reply to icon mention me on reply; thanks!) Mathglot (talk) 09:48, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot: I want to change reference No. 7 in Demographics of Nepal. It should directly link to the Excel file called Complete (estimates and all projection scenarios) (XLSX, 93.17 MB). You can find it here: https://population.un.org/wpp/Download/Standard/MostUsed/ (second file in the second column). How can I link it now?--Afus199620 (talk) 08:19, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's doable; this is becoming targeted now to a solution for this specific footnoting question, and deserves its own section; see below. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 18:37, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the spreadsheet linked from the UN population website

[edit]
Technical discussion on features and locations of UN population data       (portions of it continued here)

Thanks for that specific Nepal example in your 08:19 2 August post above. In order to give you the best answer, I need to ask some questions. Iirc, you told me somewhere that the same UN source is used as a reference in numerous Wikipedia demographic articles. (True?) If so, I wanted to ask:

  1. Do all those WP articles refer to precisely the same url population page: 'https://population.un.org/wpp/Download/Standard/MostUsed/', or does the url in the WP article footnote sometimes vary from one WP article to another?
  2. Is the spreadsheet that contains the supporting data for the different WP articles always the same, 93.17 MB spreadsheet you indicated, or does it vary? (Just talking about 2022; I get it that it will vary next year for the 28th edition.)
  3. If always the same spreadsheet, is the sheet name that contains the verifying data for the article always the first one labeled 'Estimates'? (The spreadsheet linked from the reference sourced in Demo/Nepal note 7 has eleven tabs (a.k.a 'sheets') at the bottom from 'Estimates' on the left, then 'Medium variant', 'High variant', and so on, all the way to sheet 'NOTES' all the way on the right.)

If 'yes' to all three, there's a solution that will make this quite easy for you, but even if not, it's still doable. If #1=no and #2=yes (i.e., the exact same excel sheet is linked from different UN pages in the footnote in other WP demographic articles) then please give me two or three more WP article examples, showing the same XLSX/93.17MB being linked from different UN urls in the footnotes. Thanks. (please Reply to icon mention me on reply; thanks!) Mathglot (talk) 18:37, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a start on this which you can see at Nepal #7. This was handled most easily by a template, which you can try out at {{cite UN WPP}}. It's still in testing, but feel free to play around with it on a few articles. Please list any bugs you find (or questions you have) below, and any "wish list" items can go on the Template talk page. Mathglot (talk) 06:07, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So, here's a perfect example of why we need the direct citation to the data file in the first place: you see citation #10 at the Nepal article, at the end of the § Life expectancy section? Note 10 also links (or used to link) to World Pop. Prospects, but in this case, the 2017 version of it. But not surprisingly, that old url is dead, and now it redirects to the 2022 page. So, whatever data tables were attached to that page in 2017, we don't know what they were. You might have luck with archive.org, but I don't feel that it's on me, as a reader, to chase down dead links in the Wayback Machine just to find an old page, just to see what data files are linked *from* that dead page, and then go chase *that* down. Note 7, which is discussed above, will *never* be lost, because we have a direct link to it now (so the page that used to link to it can die and it doesn't matter anymore) and if they take down the actual Excel file itself, it still doesn't matter, because we have the archive link to it in the citation; so now we have true verifiability for the data in Note 7. The new template will help cite things properly, and ensure verifiability across the board. Mathglot (talk) 09:49, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think the verifiability issue that I first noticed may be only the tip of a very large iceberg. I started to look for other articles where I could try out the template, and ended up at Demographics of Bangladesh, where note 26 also references WPP, this time, the 2016 version of it. The esa page url was dead, but preserved in the Internet archive, so I went to it. Unfortunately, that page is not the page with the data, just the page the data was linked *from*, and you can't get to it anymore. If the old, 2016 data is linked in the internet archive, we don't know about it, because you have to "execute a query" on the old page to get to it, and that doesn't work on the archived page. So, we're stuck. Basically, the Bangladesh life expectancy data is unverified in that article, which means, subject to removal from the article. Conceivably, the 2016 data was "copied forward" into the future tables, 2017, 2018, maybe even 2022; then again, they were estimates, so maybe they change a bit each year? It's possible that the 2016 estimates are completely gone, or at least, will be a giant headache for someone to track down. Multiply this, by all the demographic articles at Wikipedia, and it's unsustainable; nobody could update all those articles, tracking down old, dead figures and replacing them with ones from the 2022 survey, even if they are the same figures, which we don't know. The solution to this is two-fold:
  • Make sure to use direct citations to the data table itself, not to the web page which links to it, which is useless.
  • Make sure that the data table itself is in the internet archive. The 2022 WPP was *not* in the archive, so I added it today; it will be there forever, now, so the Nepal article footnote #7 will never go out of date.
Once we deal with the immediate footnoting problem that started this all off, I think we need to escalate this to WP:WikiProject Countries, as it probably affects hundreds of articles at Wikipedia that will need to be changed, so that they are verifiable, and remain that way. As for all the older tables that can no longer be verified, someone will have to sort that all out, and there may be a large number of them. Mathglot (talk) 10:40, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot: Yes to the first two questions. It's sometimes different spreadsheets. I mostly get it now. Thank you for your help. I tried it myself now, for Demographics of Chad, see footnote #7.
Unfortunately, many articles link to old versions of the World Pop. Prospects. A cleanup is needed, that old data is to be updated with links to the new version. But this is work for more than one person.--Afus199620 (talk) 12:48, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that's a lot of data added to the Chad article, I hope you have a tool to make that easier! (If not, I think there must be one somewhere.) That looks great, and the footnote, too. Did you have any particular difficulties figuring out how to do it? Did you kind of just copy & change it from the Nepal footnote, or did you take a look at the template doc page at all? The reason I ask, is that I'm aware that the doc page is still sparse, and will have to be beefed up so it's clear and comprehensive. But however you did it, you successfully created the new footnote at Demographics of Chad. Congrats—that footnote will never go out of date, and the Chad data from the original UN source will always be available for anyone in the future who wants to go back verify the numbers you added to the article. (Also, I see you figured out how to add the links to the abbreviations in the column header row.) Can you add just the footnote using the template at Demographics of Ghana and Demographics of Cameroon mentioned above? Should just be a one-line change to each one. Lmk if any issues.
As far as cleanup, it would be a big win if we could start by just updating the "Source: WPP" footnote in different articles to point to previous-year data, whether it's 2020,, 2017, or whatever. Old data in the article is okay, as long as its verifiable, and for that, we need to point to the old spreadsheet that someone found originally. If we can find it, that would mean just a one line-change per article, instead of a massive update like the one you did at the Chad article. (Not trying to discourage updates to 2022 data—clearly that's better because the data is newer, but that's a lot of work.) If we can find the old WPP spreadsheets online somewhere for previous years, that would be ideal; it might even be possible to request a bot that would run through all the articles, updating that one little "Source:" line that appears, using the new template. In one bot run, unverifiable data in hundreds of articles could be fixed. Then, country-editors could come along at their leisure, updating the articles to 2022 data if they wanted; but whether they did or not, at least the old data in the article would be compliant with WP:Verifiability.
If you're willing, I think you and I would make a great team to organize and advocate for getting this done. I don't know anything about country population data and never even heard of the WPP until you told me, but I have some strengths in template writing and understanding how to translate that into easy solutions for verifiability for country pop. data (whether it's found in spreadsheets, or elsewhere.) You have a ton of knowledge and experience with the sources of population data, and the demographic articles at Wikipedia that use them, and how best to incorporate that data most efficiently. I'm not suggesting that we *do* all the updates, that would be too much work; just that we figure out what needs to be done, organize our thoughts, and prepare some kind of writeup for WP:WikiProject Countries explaining the current situation, and our recommendation about how to avoid problems going forward (I think we know that part already) and how/whether to repair the problems with demographic articles pointint to old data; hopefully that would be the germ of some kind of task force at the WikiProject (or maybe a bot) to handle it, as well as a recommendation (possibly even added by consensus as a line in a Wikipedia guideline) about how to source pop. data. How does that sound to you?
Finally, I realize that this is becoming lengthy, and it's about a topic that really is more and more about a much bigger topic than the footnote at Demographics of Ghana that started this all out above, and more and more O/T for your Talk page. So, I propose we find a more centralized venue for this discussion, and start up fresh elsewhere. For starters, I think a WP:SUBPAGE of the Countries WikiProject Talk page would be the logical place: it's appropriate to the topic there, it won't be overly obtrusive or hijack the main Countries Talk page, and we'll be free to brainstorm and develop a brief writeup for the Countries Talk page, while still preserving the historical record. Probably someplace like subpage Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries/Verifiability of population data (or some other name), where we'll be free to continue this discussion without hijacking your talk page any further. (I'll leave links back and forth to make it easy to find.) Lmk your thoughts about how easy/hard it was to use the template (including the doc), about teaming up on this, and your preference about a possible new venue for continuing this discussion. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:20, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, one other thing: I'm trying to find the spreadsheet for any other year, like 2021, 2017, whatever. Once we have that, I can update the template so it automatically picks the right url when you specify the year in param 1. If you know how to find the spreadsheet for any other year, please let me know. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:36, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just so we don't duplicate effort, I found most of 2019 at the internet archive so if we want to include it in the template, it's possible. It was a big pain to find it, and at least one is missing but most of it is there. Before I think about incorporating it into the template, though, I wanted to chat with you about that. Oh, also: the 2019 WPP is version 26, and 2022 WPP is version 27, so either they skipped some years (covid?) or they only come out every three years? Do you happen to know the frequency? Mathglot (talk) 06:26, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Talk about duplicating effort! I just happened to be browsing at Demographics of Bangladesh, and I noticed that someone used template {{UN population}} to generate a reference pretty much like the one like {{cite UN WPP}} does; wish I'd seen that before! Might have to drop my template, or see if it does things the other one doesn't, and maybe merge them. Anyway, this doesn't really change anything wrt teaming up at the project to try to get stuff verified properly; doesn't really matter how the proper data source gets linked, whether through template A or template B or manually; the important thing is that it does; a template is just a tool to make the job easier. Mathglot (talk) 08:10, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot:. Yes, I already have tools to convert the data to make my work easier. My problem was just to link to the Excel file. I copied the link from the Nepal article and copied it into the Chad article. I just had to change the rows after that. That solved my problem. Thanks you for that.
I think it would be a great idea to raise this issue at WP:WikiProject Countries. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about templates and I mostly do statistics and translations in the English-language Wikipedia. I'm not comfortable writing long texts in English, therefore it would be nice if you could explain the situation properly there. This would be an important improvement for demographic statistics on Wikipedia.
Old spreadsheets should be here: https://population.un.org/wpp/Download/Archive/Standard/.
It would be the best thing in my opinion if we could all update old data in relation to the WPPs. The new version has important revisions and is not in all cases harmonizing with older versions. For example, different population estimates for past years that could irritate readers. The best thing would be some shared project to update all or at least most demographic statistics on these kinds of articles, who source to the WPPS. I mostly did uch an update for the historical vital statistics for many third world countries, but much work remains to be done.
The WPPs are normaly every two years. Because of the Impact of COVID-19 on mortality this update was delayed one year. I don't know if they changed the rhythm now. Next one should be in 2023 or 2024.--Afus199620 (talk) 20:35, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your English is great, but I understand why you wouldn't want to do a writeup; I can do that part. (I found your de user page, and if you need a copy of the template over there, I can create one. My German is intermediate level; understand most, but my writing is pretty bad. Ich bleibte ein Sommer als teenager am Starnberger See; die kennst du sicherlich.) Anyway, I need to come back and respond to your other points later. Tschüss! Mathglot (talk) 04:07, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Further to previous message: so, the new template is not a duplicate in its most important aspect, as it gives direct verifiability where there was none before. The UN population template provides a similar, {{citation}} style reference, but minus the direct link. (I've commented about this at template talk page.) So, we can keep using the new one to expand verifiability (which will also support verifiability for future years).
I have additional feedback to your last message regarding previous year data, but I think it works better at a common venue (in this case, the Template talk page). Mathglot (talk) 20:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Just to be clear: this is *your* talk page, so you get to handle it pretty much the way you want, within reason. I rolled up this discussion because I thought you would prefer it, but the discussion is not "closed", you can reply, you can keep the box but default to "show" (i.e., "expanded") by setting |collapsed=no, or you can undo it so it was the way it was before; it's your call. Great job, and a tip

[edit]

Hi Afus199620. I've been away from demographics for a little bit (working on French history), and just got back, and saw that you've made great progress, congrats! Normally, almost all the articles that use the UN WPP, are using data from the 'Estimates' worksheet (the first, i.e., left-most one) and when they do, you don't have to do anything special, because the 'Estimates' sheet is what the template cites by default, if you don't tell it otherwise. I have noticed one or two articles that cited other sheets, like the 'Medium variants' sheet. Not sure if you had a chance to check out the template doc, but it has a way to pick the right worksheet, if it isn't the 'Estimates' sheet; for example, you can add |sheet=Medium variants (or any of the others) to specify the correct one. Maybe you already knew this; I only had a chance to look at a few of the ones you updated. Anyway, thanks, and keep up the good work! I'll try and do a few myself, if only to get a better sense of the real world situation out there, and make sure the template is adequate for the job.

Have a question for you: I'm still undecided about adding the ability to handle previous year data to the template. I've seen demographic articles citing UN WPP version as far back as 2010, but I imagine it's probably better to just update the numbers in our articles to 2022 data, than trying to cite them to 10-year old data. I've seen more articles that reference the '2019' one than the really old ones, so maybe it's worth doing that, what do you think? It wouldn't be particularly hard, and it would also 'prepare the terrain', so to speak, for updating the template so that when the 2024 one comes out it will be very easy to just slide that one in there. Anyway, since you're really familiar with the demographic end of this, it just really helps to have feedback from you about this. Thanks again for running with this; I feel like with every edit you do, we're improving verifiability in the Countries project! (please Reply to icon mention me on reply; thanks!) Mathglot (talk) 08:49, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Afus199620, I've made significant improvements to the documentation of {{Cite UN WPP}}, especially in the area of short footnotes. If you find yourself using the template more than once in the same article, that's a sign that you could benefit from using short citations. There's a new section explaining how to use the template in articles where you need to refer to the UN population report more than once, and a new "Examples" section at the bottom that clearly demonstrates it. Please let me know if there's anything there that isn't clear, or that you think needs improvement. Mathglot (talk) 07:48, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of HDI table by another editor

[edit]

Hi Afus199620, I'd like your feedback regarding the removal by another editor of a large table of HDI trends data from an article. I'm not sure what (if anything) to do about it, and I'd appreciate your advice.

A brand new editor recently removed an entire HDI trends table from this HDI article. This table was originally added to the article by you, in this edit back in 2018. I challenged their large removal at Talk, and they responded by saying (without evidence) that they removed the table because the data "was incorrect", and because it contained "made up numbers". Tracking it down, I see that the table was copied from de-wiki revision 179939937 (12. Aug. 2018) of Liste der indischen Bundesstaaten nach dem Index der menschlichen Entwicklung which you created and added the table on 5 August. Knowing your attention to detail and sourcing, I don't believe a word of what this editor has to say in their comments about the data table they removed, and the removal is no doubt improper.

So here's my question for you: what is the best thing to do at this article now, if anything? I'm not sure if it's worth undoing their removal and reinstalling the trends table based on the 2018 data or not. Maybe the data is old enough that removing it doesn't matter at this point, so doing nothing in an option? I'll leave it up to you whether you think it's worth adding a comment at the Talk page discussion here, or just let it go. As for me, I've already challenged the editor once on the removal, and I don't know whether it's worth challenging them a second time based on their dubious comments about sourcing, or just let that go, too.

More generally, I'm curious what you think the important factors are in responding to editors who might remove a lot of data or even whole tables from the demographic articles. If the data is old (like, 2018, say) should I even bother commenting about such a removal, or just let it go? What do you think are the important principles here that should be observed? Thanks in advance for your thoughts, Mathglot (talk) 19:23, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mathglot, thanks for noticing this. The data I added were surely not "made up numbers". Just making up numbers of these kinds of statistics would be beyond my personal creativity. It's possible they got updated and changed retroactive. The source is still the same. You can find it here https://globaldatalab.org/shdi/table/shdi/IND/?levels=1+4&interpolation=0&extrapolation=0 with numbers going back to 1990. Instead of removing the content, they could have just updated it. I will take a look at the list myself.
Unfortunately, many lists and articles about Indian demographics and social statistics have a lot of chaotic editing and also some cases of blatant vandalism.--Afus199620 (talk) 21:25, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I pretty much guessed what you confirmed here, I just wasn't sure whether it was worth following up on, or not. Hello. HDI sourcing

[edit]

Hi again. I've reverted a few HDI dev. pages that didn't have the data in the given source. Also, could you please stop using the expression "as of 2023 with data for the year 2021" as that seems meaningless to me. What is it you are trying to say, here? If it's about when you made the edit (i.e., "in 2023") nobody reading the article will care, and it's preserved in the history, for any editor trying to track changes in the article, so you don't need to say it. About Senegal....

[edit]

About Senegal, do you know the recent types of information of the nation? Hence I have seen some edits on the population based on its recent census (being 2023). So I was wondering if you know any sources in regards to all of the level types of the administrative sub-division territorial units. Your thoughts? jlog3000 (talk) 18:47, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, you can find Departments of Senegal here:

No, unfortunately not. I don't know if results are published yet. It will probably be published here.

Understood. And I hope so eventually. But I appreciate your feedback and honesty in that regard by far. Thanks in advance. jlog3000 (talk) 20:20, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you should change title to

"List of cities with a population of over 1 million inhabitants"

Because technically even 1,000,001 is over 1 million

No need for "million or more" 84.15.182.142 (talk) 01:39, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. But cities with exactly 1,000,000 inhabitants will also be included. This is at least a theoretical possibility.--Afus199620 (talk) 11:24, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For that matter, "a" is not a number but rather gibberish or slurred speech or slang, as the closest word to "uh", and is thus unencyclopedic. The "or more" is totally redundant anyway. "with one million inhabitants" is included in "more than one million". If there's 1,000,0001 then there's already also 1,000,000. Oh yeah I forgot. "Inhabitants" is redundant to "population". The population is nothing else but inhabitants! :) And how is this article not redundant altogether against others like lists of metropolises or whatever? What's the point of this article? The title says "cities" and most of the entries are simply not cities. This article's name is inconsistent with the format of other similar articles, even those in its own "see also" section. — Smuckola(talk) 21:21, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will try to explain.
This is a list of cities/municipalities (so called city proper) and not of agglomerations or metropolitan areas. This is a clear difference. Don't get confused by names of municipalities or administrative divisions in different countries. The definition is clear and always indicated.
I made this list because I found the other ones to be lacking quality. The List of largest cities uses a ranking by the UN that mixes up metropolitan areas, urban areas and city propers. The data for city propers and metropolitan areas there is not even giving the dates of the estimates. This list is very confusing.
I think the list is not redundant. It is listing specifically municipalities/city propers over a certain population size, and not just vaguely the "largest cities". I also tried to give the specific administrative boundaries for every city and the date of estimate with sources. You generally don't find that in the other lists. I tried to make an improvement. It was a lot of work and such lists will obviously never be perfectly.--Afus199620 (talk) 13:06, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You did not provide a reliable source WP:RS for any of your recent edits to Durango (city) here. We can't just make up numbers. That last source is about Ecuador, and the previous numbers have no source whatsoever (WP:RS WP:OR). We must always provide, replace, or update the access-date, of a reliable source. Please immediately fix or revert that anywhere you've done this on the encyclopedia. That's absolutely mandatory by policy. Thank you. — Smuckola(talk) 21:21, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Population changes

[edit]

Hi, I have seen that you had made changes to the articles relating to Indian states with a projected population. Are you sure that the source you had provided is a reliable source WP:RS. All these years, the official population of 2011 census has been used as a standard as other demographics are based on that. Has there been a discussion on this? Thanks! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 14:06, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Should be reliable. Isn't this official or semi-official website? 2011 is pretty outdated now. --Afus199620 (talk) 14:18, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is definitely not the official website and it doesn't quote any primary source for the projections as well. As I have pointed out, while the projections were for the previous years as well, official data was used all the while from 2011 census and the other demographics are based on that as well. If you are not sure if it is a reliable source or if there are no primary sources for the projection, it is a point that might warrant further discussion as it affects quite a lot of pages. Magentic Manifestations (talk) 14:30, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Use Indian government sources only for census data. Estimations and figures provided by sites like census2011.co.in are unreliable. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:46, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is sorted I hope. @Afus199620 Do you have any further comments on this? Hope you will make the changes as discussed. Thanks! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 14:52, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes @Magentic Manifestations. Do you think this is an acceptable source?: https://main.mohfw.gov.in/reports-0. It is clearly from the Indian government.--Afus199620 (talk) 14:57, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a reason to use estimates even if it comes from the government institutions, unless used in a particular context, in the article body and not the infobox. If you want you can discuss it at WP:INB. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:06, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Data differs for every province. Some have only 2015, some like 2017 and some 2022. Yes there is per capita numbers but I need too add it. Seems a lot of work. Do you want to create article and I would update it everyday by a bit or you only want to publish table with all latest data? 84.15.186.166 (talk) 01:11, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Afus,

I was the first person to create a separate section about the recent incidences and I titled it "Criticism" which was then reverted because some policy against naming sections "Criticism". I then brought the separate section back under the title "Public image" and it has been reverted and unreverted for a while now. I reverted the revert once already lol and now it's reverted back in the big huge section. The ANTI-free speechers want to hid her deteriorating public image into a huge section so that people are less likely to see it. This is a disgrace on Wikipedia.

Große Divergenz moved to draftspace

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Große Divergenz. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it is a poor translation and it can't be in German in the English Wikipedia . I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit for review" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 16:40, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
