A barnstar for you!
The Amazing User Barnstar | ||
Congratulations, AutomaticStrikeout! I have decided to award you this barnstar because of your simply excellent contributions to the English Wikipedia. Thank you very much for all of your hard work here. You truly deserve this, and please enjoy it. Cheers! TBrandley 05:18, 28 November 2012 (UTC) |

Football portals
Just noticed your edit to the Gaines Adams article. Adams was a consensus All-American, so his article is on my watch list. Thanks to someone who has never worked on WP:CFB or WP:NFL, I see that we now have Portal:NFL, in addition to Portal:American football and Portal:College football. WP:American football was intended to be the professional-level portal, but fell into disuse. Now, we have two professional-level American football portals. They should be merged. Any interest in taking this to Miscellany for Deletion? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:07, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- Not necessarily. If you want to, go ahead, but I don't really have a firm view on it just yet. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 01:05, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'll approach the portal creator before I do anything. My ideal solution would be to replace most, if not all, of the existing content of Portal:AF with the relatively current content of Portal:NFL, and then redirect Portal:NFL to Portal:AF. No rush. If it took me this long to notice it, it's clearly not that big of a deal. The freelancing, however, drives me nuts. Creating major new portals without consulting the WikiProjects with oversight is just plain goofy, but I can't say it surprises me. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 04:24, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

As you probably know, Hank O'Day was just elected to the Hall of Fame and will be inducted next summer. Perhaps the Umpires Task Force could take on a project of getting his article to FA and trying to have it mainpaged the day of the inductions? If we take this on, I don't know that I'll be able to be the primary author, but I'd be glad to do what I can, particularly as to the umpiring portion of his career. What say you? - (talk page stalker) If we can get a team of maybe five people (e.g., us 3, Muboshgu and Eric Enfermero), maybe we could make it a team effort. I'm certainly not going to be able to take a start-class article to a featured one in four months; I just got my first GA today, so I have never even come close to an FA, but I would certainly be willing to pitch in. Go Phightins! 02:07, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Merge Chili burger to Chili con carne
I am letting you know that I have proposed a merge of Chili burger to Chili con carne. Being that you participated in the AfD, I'd be interested in your thoughts. The discussion is at Talk:Chili con carne#Merger proposal. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 15:17, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
It was suggested that Hamburger might be a better target, and I was implored to allow that as a possibility. Therefore, I've moved the discussion to Talk:Chili burger#Merger proposal to allow for this. Your good article nomination
Hi AutomaticStrikeout, I like your new signature for the holiday season! As for your good article nomination, I'll be adding some further comments regarding the article's current status tomorrow. The article looks very good now, and I appreciate the work that has been put into it, thanks. Anyways, I'm just curious of when you are going to attempt another candidate for yourself at requests for adminship, you could probably pass very soon. I would also like to thank you for placing my userbox for the amazing user barnstar on your user page, it recives advertisement. Happy Holidays, TBrandley 00:18, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

- (edit conflict)}No problem on the userbox and I'm glad you liked the signature (in December, green and red look good together IMO)! I must give the majority of the credit for the article work to Eric Enfermero and Go Phightins! As for an upcoming RfA, my tentative plan is to look into having Dennis Brown do a pre-RfA type review in April of next year. Depending on how that goes, my second RfA could follow soon after. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 00:27, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- That's a good idea, I'm sure you'll pass then. Again, sorry about the delay with the good article review, but some further comments are coming tomorrow. I like green and red, there awesome colors, no?! Hope you enjoy the holidays, because I know I usually do. TBrandley 01:24, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- I certainly hope I will. Don't worry about the delay, I look to forward to seeing how that turns out. I notice Ryan left a note there as well. As an aside, I think it's time for Ryan to consider his second RfA. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 02:08, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)I'm deeply offended you stole my page notice without attributing it to me! Just kidding of course. I came to second your comment that Ryan should consider another RFA. If there is a more qualified editor than him who's not already an admin, he/she is not coming to mind at present. Go Phightins! 02:19, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- I didn't entirely steal it. It's kind of original (you don't have a note inviting people to sign your guestbook). I would have put in a pic of Ryan Raburn, but I couldn't get the sizing right. Anyway, I'd have to agree with your assessment of Ryan (Vesey, that is). - I'm not about to consider another RfA, not for a long time. I'm not entirely sure I want to be an administrator, I'm still a little rough around the edges anyways (although everyone is), but I do know I have zero desire to run through that gauntlet again. Aside from the issues raised at the last run, I happen to be particularly good at pissing people off, so I don't feel like it would be all that fun. Ryan Vesey 22:10, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I'm not surprised. If even you aren't ready now, in due time, you have the potential to be one of our best admins and there's a reason you're in my Hall of Fame (speaking of which, could you email me about four nominations for January 1st when you get the chance?). Choo Shin-soo
The player's name is CHOO Shin-soo. Since he was born and raised in South Korea, family names appear first. Just because YOU never heard of his name pronounced "CHOO Shin-soo," it doesn't mean that it's not true. Check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryu_Hyun-jin. As you can see, his family name appears first. It would be wrong to call Babe Ruth, Ruth Babe in the Korean wiki, right? Exactly. It appears as Babe Ruth. Same goes for English wikipedia. Only in America is he known as Shin-soo CHOO. Names don't change; only the teams he plays for. If he returned to Korea to play, will his name change in English wiki? That would be ridiculous. Here are some other internationally-recognized Korean athletes where the English wiki has the correct name order: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Yu-Na http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Tae-Hwan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Ji-Sung — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ducati748 (talk • contribs) 03:50, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

- I believe it's similar to the use of "i.e." instead of "that is", and "e.g." instead of "for example": a bit old-fashioned, and I think most teachers will tell you to prefer the English phrase over the Latin abbreviation, but not an unusual sight even today in English writing. isaacl (talk) 01:52, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Please consider...
...leaving me out of your fantasies about how various Wikipedia editors think and how Wikipedia works; I can assure you that you have no clue. I believe this is like the second snide comment you've made about whether my behavior is ethical that I've seen; I assume you've made more that I haven't seen, safely hidden away on the talk pages of your little friends, or on IRC. In spite of this, I have not yet publicly commented on what I think of your intelligence or honor. But if you're going to make more snide comments about my ethics, then man up and talk to me about it directly. Otherwise, shut the fuck up. Floquenbeam (talk) 20:55, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I am not on IRC. Also, that edit notice clearly states that profanity is not welcome here. If you want me to discuss this to your face, I will. I find it very inconsistent how Malleus is allowed to get away with flouting the rules and Jclemens is blocked for one statement. It's even more inconsistent that you are making personal attacks as well. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 20:58, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- What is it you want to know? My rationale for blocking Jclemens? An explanation of why Wikipedia is inconsistent? No actual question, you just wanted to get that off your chest? --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:11, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'd like to know both the rationale for the block and why Wikipedia is inconsistent. Also, I'd like to apologize for dragging you into the discussion, it was uncalled for. For my part, I could have handled the whole thing better, although I still object to Malleus being treated like a victim. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 22:46, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Re: my block of Jclemens: I would not have blocked any non-arb for saying that. I very strenuously disapprove of it, and think it reflects poorly on the writer, but I don't really believe in Civility Enforcement, particularly with blocks. However, I am even more opposed to people hiding behind their authority to insult and make personal attacks on someone at the same time they are hypocritically pronouncing how that editor needs to be banned for... being insulting. It's not really the first time Jclemens has done something like that. It was a block that made a statement that I strongly believed in, and that I was willing to lose my sysop bit for (I'm still somewhat surprised I didn't). You may disagree with the reasoning, but it is certainly internally ethically consistent, and certainly not a case of me protecting my friends.
- Re: Inconsistencies in enforcement: There are hundreds of admins, from dozens of countries, with lots of different cultural backgrounds, and lots of different opinions on how civility should be handled. Many of them are kids, with insufficient judgement, many of them get a thrill from blocking someone, many of them believe that others should act with deference to them because they're admins. About 90% of the time, none of them, even the good ones, consult the others before acting. I don't see how you can possibly expect consistency from a situation like that. I'm rather amazed it isn't even more dysfunctional than it is. If you look carefully at Malleus' block log, you'll see a couple of reasonable ones, and a gigantic swath of them that amount to "I am an admin and you aren't, little man". I think Malleus' comments at the ACE talk page were too rude, directed against people that didn't know him from Adam and who were doing the best they could. But I don't see the point of using the block button (or threats of its use) to express my disagreement; I see that as much worse. Particularly when expressed in as condescending a manner as Hersfold used.
- Re: your apology: accepted, of course. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:46, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I hope we can both put this incident in the past and get along well in the future. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 23:48, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

- And please do something more useful than winding up Malleus, then going squealing to AN/I. Hint: there are articles out there you could be working on. --John (talk) 21:12, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'm beginning to wonder if "winding up Malleus" has become a hazing ritual for some secret Wikipedia circles. Difficult to explain otherwise. Malleus Fatuorum 22:29, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

- Automatic, the "why" of the block has been discussed to death and a careful read of diffs is recommended. The inconsistencies are inherent in any system that is not overly bureaucratic and that depends on so many individuals. The hazing ritual, well that is is just funny as hell to even think about. Automatic, I think a great deal of you and truly believe you have a heart of gold, but I think you might be a little out of your element on this and lack enough information. We all have our quirks: I can be a pompous ass at times, Malleus can have a foul mouth, I'm not saying anything about Floq because I think she can probably beat me up, and you go off half-cocked sometimes. You've apologized and I personally know you are sincere. Live and learn, friend. Tolerance doesn't mean you agree, it means you overlook the little things. You and I disagree on many things, but we get along great and respect each other because we focus on the things we agree on. I have a genuine respect for each person in this thread, John, MF, Floq and you. If you looked closer, I'm pretty sure that you would as well. You might not always agree with them, but you wouldn't question their motives if you knew them better. As a friend, I suggest pulling back, looking closer and keeping an open mind. There is more than meets the eye here. Dennis Brown - 2¢ © Join WER 00:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

- I'm not too keen on getting involved in another dramafest. Malleus will just be painted as an innocent victim, which is what is going on right now on his talk page. Never mind that he called me a fool, I'm still the bad guy. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C) 16:10, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- You're not the bad guy, just inexperienced -- you probably believed all that Editors should interact with each other in a respectful and civil manner. stuff, didn't you? Besides, Dennis is wrong about it being handled by the community -- the problem is the community has historically been unable to handle some sticky questions regarding user conduct. Even ArbCom says so:
Throughout the project, breaches of the expected level of decorum are common. These violations of the community's standards of conduct are unevenly, and often ineffectively, enforced. (1,2)
