Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Sikorki! Your additions to Origin of the Kurds have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's eligibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 15:38, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Diannaa Sadly, I still have no idea how to make them not copyrighted. When I don't add the full page as a quote, some people come and request it. It seems I still haven't understood how Wikipedia works, but these mistakes are helping me learn. Thank you for correcting them. Sikorki (talk) 15:50, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- The quotations are still available in the page history if anyone requests a look. Diannaa (talk) 15:51, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Diannaa You’ve removed other quotes from different sources that I didn’t add, so I guess I should avoid adding text from books as quotes altogether. I only did it that way because others had done the same.
- About the part you removed for copyright reasons can you explain exactly why it was removed? Was it because it was too similar to the original text and needs to be summarized more, or were some parts identical? Sikorki (talk) 16:09, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- The material I removed for copyvio was two sentences that wsere identical to the source, or only lightly paraphrased. Diannaa (talk) 16:12, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Diannaa Would this version be better?
- "The origin of the Kurds remains uncertain. They are often excluded from official histories and marginalized by state-centered perspectives that dominate academic history. The available historical records, mostly from non-Kurdish sources, consist of scarce and contradictory accounts from neighboring cultures, which are difficult to access or understand. This makes it challenging to trace their precise origins and early history, particularly before the Arab-Islamic conquests. As a result, many conflicting historical accounts can be created, and any attempt relies on speculation. Even within modern European academic circles, the Kurds are often misrepresented or poorly portrayed. Their history is frequently filled with errors and tends to reveal the state biases of those writing it." Sikorki (talk) 20:55, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- No, it isn't any better, because it presents the same ideas as the source, in the same order, using only slightly different terminology. Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Diannaa Sorry for asking again, but this is important because I want to contribute to Wikipedia for a long time, and it will help me with my future edits. Is this any better?
- "The origin of the Kurds remains uncertain, as they are divided among several countries. They are often excluded from official histories and marginalized by state-centered perspectives that dominate academic history. Even within modern European historical scholarship, Kurds are poorly represented, and clear state biases of authors are evident. The available historical records, mostly from non-Kurdish sources, are difficult to access or understand, resulting in various conflicting historical accounts and ongoing controversy. These factors make it challenging to trace their precise origins and early history, particularly before the Arab-Islamic conquests." Sikorki (talk) 19:34, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
