A barnstar for you!

Hi there,

I'm new to Wikipedia and wanted to add an English language page for the Delta Partners Group, since it's only available in Catalan.

Wikipedia's records show you deleting the page in November 2016, might I ask why? Seems to me like there's a valid reason for it to exist, just wanted to understand the reason.

Cheers, Demidunn

Edit (hope this is how it's done):

Thanks for helping a newbie Sphilbrick, the discussion was very informative. I do see that you're not involved, odd that your username popped up when I tried creating their english language page. I'll paste the notice I get, just for your information. Thanks again, hope you have a good one!

" A page with this title has previously been moved or deleted. If you are creating a new page with different content, please continue. Demidunn (talk) 18:32, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
@Demidunn: I see the deletion discussion here: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Delta_Partners_Group. I don't see how I was involved.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:50, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
@Demidunn: It is understandable that, as a new editor, you might not appreciate the difference between an article in main space and an article in draft space.
Delta_Partners_Group is a deleted article that was in main space
Draft:Delta_Partners_Group was a deleted article in draft space, which I had deleted. I restored it for you. (If you wish to respond, please respond BELOW this.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:07, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Culture of England

Just wondering if you're intending to check any of the other edits to that article by that IP editor. There have been many recent edits to the article, seemingly in a variety of styles - some of which have been reverted, others not. Thanks for your efforts. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:54, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

@Ghmyrtle: I did look at one other edit briefly but did not immediately see copyright violation. I noticed that article has a number of IP edits but they aren't all the same address, so while they may be the same person I can't say so for sure.
Thanks for your efforts to help.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:20, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Ehlers Danlos Society

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia, this was my first contribution. I contributed to the Ehlers Danlos Society page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehlers-Danlos_Society). I updated the board members and added an original mission statement as well as information about the hedge study to the Ehlers Danlos Society. I feel as if I did my research on how to properly cite sources well, and cited the sources to the best of my ability. In your good faith edit you cited https://boatgsb.org/who-we-are/history/ as the plagiarized source. On this website I can not find a closely matching statement to what I wrote. Also, I feel as if it a boating education organization is different enough from the Ehlers Danlos Society to not be confused. This is not to downplay plagiarism or the importance of peer review. I would ask that if the full edit can not be restored than at least the board of directors could be restored. Again this is only my first contribution and I am willing to learn what I did wrong and how to fix the situation. Thank you for your hard work peer reviewing, you are the type of person who keeps this platform running.Menglese (talk) 18:55, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

@Menglese: Sorry I must've had more than one thing open at the time and inserted the wrong URL here is the relevant URLS Philbrick(Talk) 19:07, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Please also see Wikipedia:Avoid mission statementsS Philbrick(Talk) 19:08, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

I'm agnostic on whether the Board of Directors ought to be included, but they were removed because one a copyright issue is identified the entire edit is removed. I don't have a problem to restore it although that may be others who hold a different opinion. It is not a copyright issue.

I did not miss that you put the passage in quotes. In many cases, that is a cure against being a copyright issue, if the quote is sufficiently short. See Wikipedia:Copyright violations "...(unless it's a brief quotation used in accordance with Wikipedia's non-free content policy and guideline)..."

While the link I provided about mission statements is an essay and therefore not a policy or guideline, in light of the general community consensus that such material is not encyclopedic, and it is far too long to qualify as a "brief quotation", I thought it should be removed.

I appreciate that you are trying to be careful, and I can tell you as someone with a fair amount of experience in copyright issues, that some of the problems I just identified are not well known to a fair number of editors. that doesn't excuse my inclusion of the wrong URL for which I apologize.S Philbrick(Talk) 19:15, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Since you do a fair amount of citation work, this script might interest you. Highlights things like scribd links and many other things. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 10:05, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

@Headbomb: Thanks, I will check it out.S Philbrick(Talk) 12:45, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Perhaps not this one?

Hi, Sphilbrick! I saw this about ten seconds after I'd looked at the same thing for the same reason. I chose the unencyclopaedic text "Shiloh Shepherd is powerfully built and well-balanced and should have a proud carriage and smooth, effortless gait", and found it added here on 28 November 2007. I wasn't able to find any source that had it before then; I particularly checked this. My conclusion was that this awful stuff was copied from the article history and not from elsewhere (which the numbers in square brackets also tend to confirm). Did I miss something, do you think? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 00:48, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Justlettersandnumbers: You could be right. The history of that article is odd. I've unhidden the RD1. Not sure how to proceed, but feel free to assume I missed a restoration of material. I may try to look at it closer tomorrow, but just had family show up, so not a great time to do it now.S Philbrick(Talk) 01:11, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@Justlettersandnumbers: Well, it is the next day, but I still have two grandchildren underfoot. I can do some mindless task, but not up for thinking at the moment. Please feel free to undo anything I did if you think appropriate.S Philbrick(Talk) 13:36, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
What a pleasure (the grandchildren, I mean)! My only doubt was about the revdeletion – the promotional content certainly looks as if it was copied from somewhere, but it apparently wasn't from the sources you and the IP identified, since we had it in 2007. You've already undone that, and there's nothing else I might want to undo, so ... have a good weekend! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 14:43, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it is great to have them around, but that makes it difficult to work on task requiring intense thinking.S Philbrick(Talk) 14:55, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Copyvio of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital is the health care system, and when I was adding the information about the oakland branch, I copied from the oakland article. I really didn't mean to violate copyright, I copied from another article. I would like to rewrite copyrighted parts, so if you can send me the rollbacked revisions that would be great. Andrew nyr (talk) 15:40, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Andrew nyr: I undid my edit, however:
This type of edit does get picked up by Copy Patrol and a good edit summary helps to make sure we don't accidentally revert it. However, for future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved. It's not too late, see the link for how to use a null edit to add attributionS Philbrick(Talk) 16:43, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

So, unless you have some serious objections, I am going to include this brief quotation per Acceptable use. I will only have to include one additional phrase in citation to accommodate concerns of another user on the article talk page. My very best wishes (talk) 23:24, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

About strike

Hello dear, Recently I created Draft:Kinita Kadakia Patel You marked it as copyright issue, actually i have written the article in a natural point of you and the thing is and whatever i have provided i have given sources to it, but you said i have copied the matter from http://www.kinitakadakia.com/about-kinita but i haven't copied anything from here this website is published later from the news sources i have given, all the information they proved on http://www.kinitakadakia.com/about-kinita is picked up from the public domin so kindly please all me to fix the Draft:Kinita Kadakia Patel Captainnoisy (talk) 19:08, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Captainnoisy: This site is not public domain, it is subject to full copyright. Let's explore the possibility that site copied form youS Philbrick(Talk) 19:47, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
It looks like you might have copied from this rather than this but neither site is freely licensed.S Philbrick(Talk) 19:51, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your valuable reply. So whats next please advise me, so that i can move further, then i can change the formate of article and fix it up. Captainnoisy (talk) 19:53, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

You haven't persuaded me that your draft isn't largely a copyright violation. If you think I'm wrong, please contest it on the article talk page. If you accept that it is largely a copyright violation , you might want to save the contents offline if you haven't already, and think about creating a new draft without copyright violations.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:06, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick: I am sorry i didn't know that this could be a copyright violation kindly forgive the mistake i may fix this page. Captainnoisy (talk) 20:32, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
It's my experience that many new editors are not completely familiar with copyright issues. Wikipedia does take copyright very seriously. You Are Not AloneS Philbrick(Talk) 20:34, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick:Thanks for your support. Please tell me what i have do next. Captainnoisy (talk) 20:38, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion contested: Islamic Azad University, Jahrom Branch

Hello Sphilbrick. I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Islamic Azad University, Jahrom Branch, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The website that uses the same content credits Wikipedia as its source. Thank you. MrClog (talk) 10:56, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

@MrClog:I see that the initial editor removed a lot of the material. Have you confirmed that it is no longer infringing? (I did miss that the site I linked credits Wikipedia)S Philbrick(Talk) 11:02, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
The material is not used by any other site than Wikipedia and the site that credits Wikipedia. Copyvio check does not reveal any other potential copyright problems. --MrClog (talk) 11:04, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
@MrClog and Sphilbrick: Hi, is there any problem with the fact that most of the references of the article are in Persian? Rizorius (talk) 11:08, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Rizorius, no, sources in any language are fine. However, if sources in English also exist, it is preferred that these are added as well. --MrClog (talk) 11:10, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Rizorius, I agree with MrClog. S Philbrick(Talk) 11:11, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
@MrClog: all right, then what should I do for the article to improve it and remove the above tag you added? Rizorius (talk) 11:13, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Rizorius, I sent you a message on your talk page regarding the tags :) --MrClog (talk) 11:14, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Old OTRS template

Hello. There's an OTRS template from 2009 on Talk:Jimmy Cauty concerning a complaint about personal information. Since I do not have OTRS access, would you mind looking into the ticket and removing the template if it's outdated or not actionable? If it's current and actionable would you mind either removing the info which is objected to or advising me what to do? --kingboyk (talk) 08:05, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Kingboyk, It appears that the issue was addressed in 2009. One of the items is clearly addressed. The other seems to be. I see a comment on the talk page, although I'm not sure what prompted it. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:11, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
OK, thank you very much. Should I remove the template or is it meant to remain as part of the historical record? --kingboyk (talk) 12:17, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Kingboyk, The one on the talk page should remain as part of the historical record. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:19, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Loyola High School Kolkata

Is it prohibited to use ' http://www.archdioceseofcalcutta.in/schools.html ' website as a reference in Loyola High School (Kolkata) , it contains important information regarding its history? ImPritamShaw (talk) 13:21, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

ImPritamShaw, It is prohibited to simply copy and paste copyrighted text (with rare exceptions, such as short quotes). You need to write it in your own words. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:28, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

So, if I write in my own words and use that website as a reference, will it be fine? ImPritamShaw (talk) 15:55, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

ImPritamShaw, Yes. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:29, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

DJ Telly Tellz

On January 15th 2017 you deleted a page for a Music Producer by the name of "DJ Telly Tellz" I am contacting you because I want to make edits/create the page and to notify you that I have references from multiple notable sources that he is talked about on that could be used to create the page.

I just noticed, you reverted my good faith edit to Tata College,Chaibasa as you suspected copyright violation. You have refereed the copyright issue as - 'Copyright issue re http://jwcmango.ac.in/index.php/about-us'. To my best knowledge and belive it's not a copyright issue, but similarity of language and expression. For your kind information, the content of the link you have reffed was also authored by me during 2015-16, while I was an Asst Professor at the college. At present I am at Tata College, Chaibasa. I have also authored all the content for college website. I request you to kindly review and revert back your revision. I assure you that there is no copyright issue in this context. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabashranjan (talkcontribs) 12:15, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Prabashranjan, Believe it or not, it actually still is a copyright problem.
I did notice that the site with the similar language was for a different school, which likely means that one of the schools copied from the other. However, whichever school had the text first almost certainly holds the copyright for the text. Even though you might have written it, if you released it for use by the school they almost certainly hold the copyright. If you still hold the copyright and they are using it with your permission, will need to see evidence of that because I've never heard of such a situation. Even if you still hold the copyright, we need an explicit release from you as well as evidence that you, not the school over copyright. In the more likely event that the school holds the copyright, we need an explicit release from them. I can give you more information about arranging for an explicit release if you want to pursue that option. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:23, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I understand your concern. This is why I requested the college to properly attribute my contribution through a note in the page you have referred as copyright issue - re http://jwcmango.ac.in/index.php/about-us. Now the copyright has been attributed to me. Please recheck for a copyright attribute at the end of the content that reads - 'Content for this page is authored by Prabashranjan ( prabashranjan@gmail.com) and copyright goes to him.' Can I use the text or similar style / information on Wikipedia? Kindly let me know. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabashranjan (talkcontribs) 14:33, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Prabashranjan, Thanks, that's the first step (and the first time I've seen such a situation.) The second step is to provide a license so that it can be used in Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries. That will take a few days to process but if you tell me when you've sent it in, I'll AGF and restore the material I removed. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:15, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. I just completed the second step by following then instructions. I just mailed the Consent Declaration to Wikipedia. Please do the needful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabashranjan (talkcontribs) 18:32, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Prabashranjan,  Done S Philbrick(Talk) 18:55, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you.

I'm a student of that particular college, i know about it very well than a outsider. If i copy a information from 'my' college website, and publish with corrections. What wrong in this. Akkifying life (talk) 21:06, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Akkifying life, The material is almost certainly covered by copyright, and use of it as is constitutes a copyright violation. If you think it is not covered by copyright (extremely rare) please let me know. S Philbrick(Talk) 21:46, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Question why new post was pulled down

Hi I'm a new editor trying to add some value to Wikipedia, slowly but surely. Recently I created my first new post but it was pulled down a day later and I'm not sure why. I would like to understand why it was pulled down so that I can learn and progress in this community. The post was for Global Voice Group. Looking forward to your feedback. Regards Ninja Theory TM (talk) 16:07, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Ninja Theory TM, I'm confused. I see a draft named Global Voice Group but it was deleted in 2019.

Sorry, I see that you did provide the url. Yes, you were attempting to create an English language article in the Spanish Wikipedia. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:41, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Ninja Theory TM, I may have over-analyzed this. You might simply have been at the Spanish Wikipedia. I don't find the article, but perhaps it was removed because it is in English. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:40, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I was wondering about that. How silly of me.. I navigated there through my research. I guess I should have created the page from scratch. I will redo it. Ninja Theory TM (talk) 20:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

I'm a little confused here, it is now ok to move a page based on a private off-wiki discussion, presumably with the obvious paid editor who had just been editing the page? Beeblebrox (talk) 17:49, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Beeblebrox, No, it is OK, as always, to move a page when someone points out that the school name doesn't match the title, and I do my own independent Google search and confirm the commonname according to sources. FWIW, the name I moved it to was NOT the name they asked for. I include the OTRS number in case subsequent issues arise and I want to refer to it, so it isn't included as a rationale for the move, it is included for my own reference. S Philbrick(Talk) 11:09, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Ok, fair enough. Thanks for the reply. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:02, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
