==Background==

Following the [[United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea]] extension of maritime nations' [[exclusive economic zone]]s to {{convert|200|km|nmi|0}} Australia agreed to provide twelve of its neighbours with 22 Pacific Forum-class patrol vessels, so they could exercise sovereignty over their own extended EEzs, using their own resources.<ref name=EmbassyHow2014-04-03/> The first vessel was delivered in 1987, and in 2015 Australia announced plans to replace the original patrol boats with larger and more capable vessels.

==Design==

Australian shipbuilder [[Austal]] won the $335 million [[Australian dollar]] contract for the project, and built the vessels at its [[Henderson, Western Australia|Henderson]] shipyard, near Perth.<ref name=Smh2018-05-30/>  Guardian class vessels were designed to use [[commercial off-the-shelf]] components, not cutting edge, military grade equipment, to make them easier to maintain in small isolated shipyards.

The vessels are {{convert|39.5|m|ft}} long, can travel {{convert|3000|nmi|km}} at {{convert|12|knots|kph|lk=in}}.<ref name=Smh2018-05-30/> Their maximum speed is {{convert|20|knots|kph}}.<ref name=Janes2018-12-03/>  Their design allows the recipient nations to mount a pair of heavy machine guns, on either flank, and possibly an autocannon of up to 30mm, on the foredeck.

==Operational history==

''Ted Diro'' was the first Guardian-class vessel to have her [[keel]] [[Keel laying|laid]] in July 2017. She was the first to be [[Ceremonial ship launching|launched]], in May 2018.<ref name=fijitimes2018-05-31/><ref name=National2018-07-03/> She began her formal [[sea trial]]s on 9 August 2018.<ref name=Janes2018-08-09/><ref name=manmonthly2018-08-13/> The patrol vessel is scheduled to be [[Ship commissioning|commissioned]] in late October, when her acceptance trials are completed.

On 22 October 2018 the ''[[Post Courier]]'' reported that delivery was scheduled for December.<ref name=PostCourier2018-10-22/> Diro, head of the PNGDF [[Major General]] [[Gilbert Toropo]] and [[Angus Campbell (general)|Angus Campbell]], Chief of the [[Australian Defence Force]], attended the vessel's commissioning, on 1 February 2019.<ref name=postcourier2019-02-05a/><ref name=postcourier2019-02-05b/><ref name=navaltoday2019-02-12/><ref name=maritime-executive2019-02-12/><ref name=NavyDaily2019-02-12/>

In August 2019 two warships of the [[Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force]] visited [[Port Moresby]].<ref name=EmTv2019-08-06/>  The Japanese vessels hosted the crew of ''Ted Diro'', together with local VIPs, and her crew hosted visiting Japanese personnel on tours of ''Ted Diro''.

On 17 October 2019 ''[[The Australian]]'' reported that ''Ted Diro''{{'}}s engines had broken down, and she had to be towed back to [[Cairns]], for repairs.<ref name=theaustralian2019-10-17/>
