The first major railroad terminal in Seattle was [[King Street Station]], opened in 1906 for the [[Great Northern Railway (U.S.)|Great Northern Railway]] and [[Northern Pacific Railway]] at the end of the [[Great Northern Tunnel]]. Seattle was initially passed over as the terminus for the [[Northern Pacific Railway]], who instead chose [[Tacoma, Washington|Tacoma]] {{convert|40|mi|km}} to the south in 1873.
