The "rebellion" started with the muslim peasantry taking umbrage against their Hindu masters who were "elite". Not sure why the editor adjectivized that as "supposedly".

Since time immemorial Kerala was known as "Malabar" or the "Malabar Coast" or the west coast of Tamilakam (Tamilnad Kerala Tulunad Coorg). The notion of Malabar being anything less than present-day Kerala came around only in british rule when they called the then Malayalam-speaking areas (Kerala minus Thiruvithamkoor) as "Malabar District".
