  • curprev 18:4518:45, 8 March 2018 132.161.226.217 talk 3,810 bytes +1 The suggested pronunciation for the city of Píllaro should be changed. Most of the Ecuadorian Sierra conserves distinction between the LL and the Y sounds. In the Chimborazo and Tungurahua provinces, it is very common to hear the palatal lateral approximate, which is most like a "ly" sound if it can be approximated in English. In northern and central Ecuador the LL takes on the sound of the LL in parts of Argentina outside of Rio De La Plata (it is an aspirated SH sound equivalent to the French J and sometimes approximated by "zh". Thus with this pronunciation Píllaro would be "Pee-zha-ro." The conservation of the LL as one of these two sounds exists thanks to variants of Ecuadorian Kichwa. While some people have converted to yeísmo, this tends to be the minority in Ecuador. undo
