@PrimeHunter: Thanks for that. Still makes me laugh, decades later. (It's at about the 18 minute mark in S1E8 at Netflix.) —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 09:30, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

how to remove public IP address on a past edit

[edit]

I am a first time user, and had accidentally edited a page without realising my IP would be shown. So, I created an account to hide the edit, however both the IP and the account aren't linking. I am wondering how to make the accounts merge somehow. Thank you.

Hickdole (talk) 03:21, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hickdole: There’s no way to link IP edits to a newly registered account. If there were, you could claim any number of edits as your own. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 05:55, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Hickdole: If you want the IP address to be hidden for privacy reasons then see Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. The edit cannot be assigned to an account. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:21, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Name of WP Guideline Page

[edit]

Hello, I remember reading a Wikipedia Guideline page that went something like, just because similar articles exist on Wikipedia doesn't mean that should be used to justify an article being kept instead of deletion- for lack of a better explanation. I'm not sure what the page is called so it would be very helpful if someone could link it down below. Thank you. SenatorLEVI 03:22, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SenatorLEVI: Try Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:47, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Updating of Page's title

[edit]

Hi there,

I would like to change the page title of 'PSA Building' to 'mTower'. This is a property owned by my company and since we've changed the building name to mTower as at January 2021, we would like to update this information asap. Would appreciate if you guys can speed things up for us.

i've put up a request for speedy renaming/merging with the function

[redacted CFD template]

not sure if that's the right way to be doing this and if so, what's the next step from here. If any form of verification is required in order to make this changes to the page's title, feel free to reach out to me.

For more information, you can also head over to my company's website at https://www.mapletreecommercialtrust.com/Asset-Portfolio/Portfolio-Overview.aspx.

Thanks a lot.

Best regards, Kenneth — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kennethoqs (talkcontribs) 03:29, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kennethoqs: No, that's not the way to rename an article. I suppressed your CFD template here on the help desk as an initial measure before proceeding.-Arch dude (talk) 04:57, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kennethoqs: you rename an article by moving it. Since you have a conflict of interest (WP:COI) please do not move the article or make any other editos to it yourself. Instead, make suggestions for changes on the article's talk page, as you did in this case, but ass {{request edit}} to your request on the talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 05:05, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kennethoqs: The subject does not appear to me to meet our notability requirements. see WP:NCORP. Please try to find additional references in reliable sources and request that they be added. Otherwise some editor may nominate the article for deletion. -Arch dude (talk) 05:09, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kennethoqs: You are what we call a "paid editor". See WP:PAID. Before you do anything else, please make the appropriate declaration on your user page. This is mandatory to conform to our terms of use. I'm sorry if it appears that I am being negative here. We actually do value your contributions, but it's important to do it right. -Arch dude (talk) 05:15, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite journal item with no title

[edit]

I am trying to cite this review using {{Cite journal}}, but it has no title (e.g. see the JSTOR suggested citations), and so the template complains. I stuck "Review" in there as a substitute title just to quiet the template, but that feels a bit disingenuous (even more so because "Review" is an English world while this document is in French). Any suggestion on how I can properly cite this? Thanks. Brycehughes (talk) 05:13, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes: The goal of a citation is to provide the reader an unambiguous identification of the cited work. The templates are intended to simplify this. You are in theory free to not use a template at all if it is just getting in your way, and construct whatever citation format you wish. However, in this case, I would use the template as you did, but with the title "Review of: Tibesti. Carrefour de la préhistoire saharienne, coll. « Clefs de l'aventure »". This most closely reflects the JSTOR entry.-Arch dude (talk) 05:24, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll either follow your suggestion or handwrite it. Thank you!! Brycehughes (talk) 05:31, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well handwriting won't work because I'm using {{sfnref}}, so your suggestion it is. Brycehughes (talk) 05:37, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Brycehughes: I come across this issue sometimes when quoting from newspapers. I get around it by using |title=(untitled). Mjroots (talk) 18:57, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I like that. Brycehughes (talk) 22:33, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Basic copyediting suggests that Grammarly has a browser plug-in that can be used with Wikipedia. If you have technical problems setting this up, I suggest you ask someone who is a member of the copy-editing team. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:06, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mike Turnbull I have the browser extension enabled and it is working smoothly on most other sites. And as for talking to someone from The Guild Of Copyeditors, I myself am a member of it but will surely try and contact someone on the Project page.
Thanks,

@Wikiedit01995: Grammarly has extensions for browsers like Chrome and Firefox, which can be found on their webstores for free. That being said, I would caution you to not rely on Grammarly 100%, as it does not recognise all variants of English. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:00, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help adding a photo of someone to their wiki page

[edit]

Hello, I have uploaded a photo of Tony De Nunzio to wiki commons and would like to add this to his wiki page, how can I do this please? Thanks

@Assistant2021: I have added it to the infobox.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 10:47, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
An I have just tagged the file on Commons for speedy deletion, because it appears on multiple other websites with no evidence of any free license, in fact, The company website says here "The copyright and all other intellectual property rights in and to the Website and any and/or all of the material on the Website are either owned by us or are included with the permission of the owner of the rights. As a visitor to the Website, you may download a single copy of each piece of material contained on the Website for your own private viewing purposes only, provided you keep intact all and/or any proprietary notices.", i.e. Copyrighted. Query - Page Creation

[edit]

Hi,

I am from a communications agency based in Dubai, UAE, and writing on behalf of one of our clients. We have been trying to create a personality page and the request has been denied multiple times now.

Would like to understand how can we get proper feedback and go ahead with this?

If you have a local representative that we can speak to and understand the mechanics better, please let us know.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.50.41.77 (talk) 13:13, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor, Wikipedia does not host personality page[s], but articles. Your client should be notable for Wikipedia's standards, and if so, should ideally not be directly edited by anyone who has a conflict of interest (especially if there is a paid relationship). You could create an account, disclose your conflicts of interest and paid relationships on your user page, and submit edit requests on the article's talk page if it is created. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:51, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr Salvus: What do you mean by "the answers data"? PrimeHunter (talk) 22:11, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: I mean the data about the attendance of a lot of matches which are not present in the wikitable. Dr Salvus (talk) 22:15, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The surname Bhonsle has different romanisations. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:01, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The proper spelling of Shivaji's clan name (not really a surname) is either भोंसले or بھونسلے depending on which script he used during his lifetime. As Tenryuu said, there are multiple romanizations of his clan name, as you see in the Bhonsle article. Unless you have a reliable source for which particular romanization he personally preferred, or that scholars have agreed on since his time, we have no reason to change the the Shivaji article. -Arch dude (talk) 18:30, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings wikipedia help desk colleagues. I attached one of our publications at the bottom of the Rio Grande Compact wikipedia entry, and I need to change the web address, as it's now out of date. Can you help guide me on how to do this?

Click the "Edit" tab at top of the article, or one of the "edit" links at the section headings. You can also post the old and new link here. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:09, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You could also ask for assistance at the article's talk page: Talk:Rio Grande Compact, and provide the old and new link. GoingBatty (talk) 22:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes that happens because somebody posts a link to the mobile version of Wikipedia instead of the computer version. It can be disconcerting, although the content should be basically identical. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:51, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wariowhyishere: The bottom of mobile pages have a "Desktop" link. Poor layout can happen if some style sheet (web development) hasn't loaded properly in your browser. Bypassing your cache usually fixes it. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:05, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A question about the 'Notability' test

[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians. I have a question regarding the Notability test. I'm a longtime editor from the Bosnian Wikipedia with a lot of work done and experience but also on a hiatus currently. I never did anything on the English wiki so I'm not quite familiar with all the rules especially since I'm on a hiatus for quite some time now.

Why I'm asking? Well, I have been contacted by a private party to create an article for them on the English Wikipedia about their relative who is a tennis player. Now the player in question is not a top player as of now and they are wondering whether he can have a Wikipedia page about himself. Will it be deleted or not? I have noticed that players ranked 800 + do have pages that are still on here. The player in question is currently in the top 500.

Can someone familiar with this explain the rules to me regarding the notability test and my situation? Is it safe to go ahead or does he need to improve? Thank you for your time. Best of wishes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1diggy3 (talkcontribs) 20:43, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1diggy3 This tennis player must meet the Wikipedia definition of a notable tennis player, which is written at WP:NTENNIS, as shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources. Please see Your First Article.
If this private party is going to compensate you for your work, you must make a formal declaration of that, see the paid editing policy. Please also review conflict of interest. 331dot (talk) 20:51, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@1diggy3: There are four Bosnian men in the singles top 500 [2]: Damir Džumhur, Mirza Bašić, Nerman Fatić, Aldin Šetkić. They all have articles so I guess the player isn't Bosnian. Many players from small tennis nations can satisfy point 2 at WP:NTENNIS with a low rank or no rank: "Have competed in one of the international team competitions: Fed Cup, Davis Cup, Hopman Cup, or World Team Cup". Fed Cup is for women. Hopman Cup and World Team Cup is for a small number of elite players. But any man who is among the top players of his country at any time of his career could be selected for a Davis Cup match and qualify for an article. Somebody still has to make the article. The low levels like 2019 Davis Cup Africa Zone Group IV are full of red links. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:59, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Template Subtitle

[edit]

Hello, I find this french template https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod%C3%A8le:Sous-titre useful because it can show a nice subtitle just under the very title of the wiki article. For instance, Nigeria shows Nigéria (other way to write its name into French) just under Nigeria title. How can the {{Subtitle}} achieve that? Seems there is a lack of css name in English wiki for the so-called noexcerpt ? --Bouzinac (talk) 22:48, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bouzinac: Could you please provide an example of an article on the English Wikipedia where you would like to see a subtitle? GoingBatty (talk) 23:00, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bouzinac: The French Wikipedia uses code for sous_titre_h1 in both fr:MediaWiki:Common.js and fr:MediaWiki:Common.css. The English Wikipedia does not use subtitles. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:38, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there @GoingBatty: , you could find some examples below
Wikiarticle Proposed subtitle
55_Cancri_c Brahe
United States Declaration of Independence The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
West Germany Federal Republic of Germany
Antsiranana Diego-Suarez
Charles XV Charles IV
Darth Vader Anakin Skywalker
Piano Concerto No. 9 (Mozart) Jeunehomme
Mariánské Lázně Marienbad
--Bouzinac (talk) 07:07, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Some of those seem to be the same as or similar to WP:Short descriptions. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:32, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, ENwiki has a policy to store description : a short phrase describing the subject, eg Binary star system located 41 light-years away from the Sun in the zodiac constellation of Cancer for 55_Cancri_c ). It is my comprehension that short description should not be "the main synonym" of the subject (eg Brahe for 55_Cancri_c).--Bouzinac (talk) 12:18, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the spelling for Diwali/ Divali

[edit]

Hi there, This is Vaishnavi. I would like to change the spelling for Diwali/Divali to Deepawali/Deepavali. Deepavali/Deepawali means 'lines of Deepams'. In Tamil தீபாவளி = தீபம்+ஆவளி. தீபம் - lamps/ lights, ஆவளி - வரிசை (lining up/ lines). Diwali/Divali means a person who involved in bankrupt. Diwal/Dival means bankruptcy. This will change the entire morning of the festival. We celebrate this festival for Goddess Lakshmi who is the God for wealth. So, please change the spelling for the festival

If this is about a Wikipedia article, please start a discussion on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 23:37, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
