Characters
Humans
;Gohei Takeda: Professional bear hunter a village in Ōu. He is Shiro's owner, Riki's owner in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, and Gin's temporary trainer and master in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin.

;Daisuke: A young boy who is saved by Riki from Heiji and the stray dogs. He stars in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin as the twelve-year old who is Gin's owner. He is also a minor character in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin's sequel, Ginga Densetsu Weed, as a young grown-up man who hunts with his older friend, Hidetoshi.

;Yūjirō: The temporary owner of Yamabuki, Riki's mother. He's taking care of Yamabuki for his sick sister. He is married to Eiko and has a son named Tōru.

;Eiko: Yūjirō's wife and Tōru's mother.

;Tōru: Son of Yūjirō and Eiko who feeds Yamabuki and her new pups.

;"Big Sister": Name unknown. The real owner of Yamabuki. She was sick, but when she is healed, Yamabuki is returned to her, much to Riki's dismay.

The Animals
;Riki: A red/brown Akita Inu and the runt of the litter. Nobody believed him to ever amount to anything, and gave him the nickname, "little mistake". Riki's brothers and sisters were all bought by the villagers, but the runt was never adopted, and had to live with his mother, Yamabuki, which made him into a spoiled momma's boy. However, when big Sister Bizen wants Yamabuki back, Riki protests when he is put back into the car. Soon he gets over it, and when a storm approaches, he goes out on his own for the first time. Unfortunately, Riki confronts some stray dogs who are led by a Malamute named Heiji. Heiji smells humans on Riki, and he orders his "brothers" to attack. Riki then runs off and jumps into a river to escape, but is knocked out by a rock. He wakes up to find himself safe on land and also notices a grey Akita swimming towards him. The Akita is his father, Shiro. Shiro does not know Riki is his son, and he tells him the reason he was bullied was because he was crying. Riki is touched by his father's speech and, when Shiro leaves before Riki can tell him he's his son, he has a new goal in life. Riki returns to Yujiro's home, and heals. He eats lots of food to grow big and strong, just as Shiro told him to, and he also builds hi stamina by running one-hundred kilometers to his mother's home. One day, he sees the toddler, Daisuke, on his bicycle, and is shocked to see a truck speeding behind the boy. Daisuke is hit and he tumbles down the ledge of the road into the forest, unconscious. Riki follows and, to his dismay, cannot pick up the boy. Instead he leaps up to a hill and howls for help. Unfortunately, Heiji and his group hear Riki, and follow his cries, surprised to see Daisuke in their territory. Heiji attacks Daisuke as he wakes up, but Riki saves him, his bear-dog blood changing his instincts as he thinks of his father and what he told him. In his new bravery, he breaks one of Heiji's ribs, leaving him unable to fight, and suffocates another dog named Monta. Luckily, Shiro and takeda Gohei appear, and Riki calls up to his father. Heiji and the others now know Riki is the son of the legendary bear-dog, Shiro, and they run off, scared. Shiro now knows Riki is his son, and the two are now family. Riki's story about saving Daisuke spreads around the village, and the villagers treat Riki with as much respect as Shiro. After the incident with Heiji and the rest, Riki was allowed to run around the forest and village, and each day he visited his mother. A few years passed, and Riki was now three years old. He watches an ambulance pass by, and is amazed to see Takeda Gohei with his bear-dogs to go after Akakabuto jumping out of a car. Riki sees his father, and wants to go with him, but Shiro whines in dog language for him to stay. The van drives off, and Riki follows it, not knowing that Shiro is nearing his death. When he catches up, he sees his father grabbing hold of Akakabuto and, with a push from a tree, he and the giant bear fall down a cliff. After watching his father's death, Riki vows revenge on Akakabuto.

;Shiro: Riki's father, a silver/grey Akita Inu. Shiro is the mate of Yamabuki, who gave birth to his offspring. Shiro is the leader of his bear-dog comrades due to his higher intelligence and training, and is Gohei's favorite "child." Shiro saves Riki from drowning, and catches a fish for the pup to eat. He does not know Riki is his son, and he tells him not to cry when the Akita pup remembers the beatings he got from Heiji and the other stray dogs. Shiro tells Riki he has to grow up big and strong, and without Riki able to tell the grey Akita that he is his father, Shiro runs off. Shiro and Takeda Gohei later find Daisuke, who has waken up after being hit by a truck. He tells them Riki saved him, and Shiro realizes Riki is his son. Unfortunately, Shiro and his bear-dog group have to go and kill Akakabuto, and Shiro sees Riki chasing after them. The son of the mighty bear-hound wants to go with his father, but Shiro knows he'll supposedly die, and he wants to keep his son safe. The van leaves without Riki, who secretly follows, and Shiro confronts Akakabuto. One by one his comrades die, and Shiro's belly is ripped open. Still he fights Akakabuto, and with his last ounce of strength he pushes both him and the demon bear off of a cliff and dies.

;Yamabuki: Riki's stern and loving mother, a white Akita Inu. Belongs to "Big Sister". Yamabuki is the mate of Shiro, the legendary bear-hound. She takes good care of her son, Riki, who has to live with her because no one wants him. She tells him not to cry since he is spoiled, and tries to make him eat more food so he can grow big like his father. Riki declines because he knows she isn't eating as much food due to him having it all. The two are separated when Yamabuki's original owner, Big Sister Bizen, wants her back. As much to Riki's dismay, Yamabuki tells him to brace himself for the future and to build up his character. Riki visits Yamabuki every day as he exercises.

;Heiji: Heiji lives in the forest with his "brothers" and confronts Riki. He smells humans on Riki, and attacks him since he hates the scent. Months later after Riki had run off, Heiji and the others hear Riki howling for help, and they find the boy, Daisuke, unconscious after being hit by a truck. They attack, but Riki saves Daisuke and breaks one of Heiji's ribs. Shiro and Gohei appear, and Heiji's group run off with him. Heiji swears he'll make someone pay for his unhealing rib, but he never meets Riki again.

;Monta: Monta is Heiji's "brother" and attacks Riki with him. In the second fight, he is suffocated almost to death by Riki's grasp on his neck. He and the group leave Riki alone after they learn he is the son of Shiro.

;Heiji's brothers: One of the two is called Gureko, but the other dog's name was not mentioned. They follow Heiji in their territory.

;Akakabuto: A large, mad bear attacking local livestock and terrorizing the people of Ōu.
