Binahian is one of the most beautiful barangays of Sipocot, Camarines Sur (Region V) in the Philippines, and nestles peacefully on the eastern shoreline of Ragay Gulf. Looming over the village is a verdant hill behind where the sun rises majestically each morning and then teasingly leaves a breathtaking sunset over the sea each evening. This perfect setting has attracted many tourists and visitors who fall in love with the village and its people and decide to stay. Its neighbouring barangays include Caima, Manlubang, Lipilip, and Carayrayan (all from the town of Sipocot) and Bangon of Lupi.

The native dialect spoken here is Bikol, or as some would claim, Mainland Bikolnon. This can be understood by the Bicolanos in all provinces of Region V unlike other Bikol dialects, which vary from town to town and can be very hard to understand.

The Author clearly recalls that during her early childhood (70's & 80's), Binahian has only a handful of households so everyone knows everyone in the neighbourhood, no matter how far that neighbour may be. There is still quite a few old and respected villagers who either escaped the Japanese occupation or bravely fought for their village during World War II and who will now willingly share their harrowing experiences with all those who show an interest. They have all aged gracefully and their eyes show the joy of witnessing how their beloved tiny barangay has turned into a place of beauty as time goes by. These few lucky war survivors have become the soul of the village and have successfully imparted their cheerfulness and friendly attitude to the next generation, making Binahian a very lovely place to visit.

The compilation of the photos below shows how simple and happy life can be - a lovely smile from innocent faces, no skyscrapers nor modern establishments - but most people living here consider it their version of paradise.

A video of these photos is also available on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJKjrrNQ5Ek

Historya Kan Barangay
*During the Author's recent visit to the village, more information and useful contributions were gathered. This whole passage written in Bikolnon, the local dialect, is a contribution from one of the Barangay Officials.

Breathtakingly Captivating
Many thanks to Ana Cristina Samson Palmes (Author's cousin) who has shown a great skill in capturing the village's breathtaking beauty at its best.

Summer Getaway
Visitors who just want to unwind opt to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded village. A favourite destination is the little island of Puro which is just an hour or less away. This is one of the Tres Marias (the three small islands encircling Binahian bay). Puro offers a pebble beach lapped by crystal waters which are just so inviting and an absolute haven for snorkelling. Many fishes of different size and colour surely await to amuse any friendly fellow.

Communications and Transportation
Internet connection and telephone services are soon to be included on the list of the perks that the villagers and visitors can enjoy. The giant Smart Communications enjoys a couple of hundred subscribers exclusively because it's the only telecommunication company that has erected a satellite station nearby although Globe Telecoms and Sun Cellular are expected to reach the area in the near future.

Only during summer can PUV's reach the place since there is no well-constructed road from the town through, but rain or shine, the water taxis are always readily available to take passengers to the nearest port, Tagbac.

The first half of 2010 brought so much joy to the people in the village as well as to the neighbouring barangays when the road construction finally started connecting the mainland to the village. Before almost the only method of reaching Binahian was by bangka or water taxi from Tagbac! The photo above shows that something good is already happening and definitely, many more to come.

Earning a Living
Because of its remote location along the coast, many of the residents depend on fishing to bring food to the table, whilst others run water taxis to bring and fetch passengers to Tagbac, the nearest harbour with access to the mainland. Binahian has many sari-sari (variety) stores, and a couple of copra dealers; otherwise the main industry is agriculture. Coffee, rice and other seasonal crops such as mongo beans, corn, tomatoes, and other ethnic vegetables are grown in smallholdings to help meet the needs of the population. Some locals have poultry, pig or fish farms, and so the village always has a wide variety of truly local products on offer.

Many brave souls, who aspire for more, have chosen to work abroad and are now becoming popular as they are growing in number, attracting the younger generations to dream bigger.

The School
Binahian Elementary School is the only educational institution the village has. The elementary graduates have to go elsewhere to continue their pursuit of getting higher education.

This primary school has already produced many professionals like Educators, Dentists, Nurses, Engineers from different fields of specialization, Computer Programmers, Accountants, Business Management graduates and many more, who are now working all over the country and some parts of the world.

Some education graduates have come back to the village to practice their noble career thereby having their chance of a lifetime of working hand in hand with their former teachers who inspired them to pursue their dreams.

High respect to the teachers, old and new alike, who continuously give their best in imparting knowledge without any reservations. These teachers have shown dedication in their work, moulding the young minds and honing the skills of the students who in turn give their best to excel in their endeavor to compensate the teachers' unparalleled efforts.

"When we see you successful, that's when we know we succeeded." That's any teachers favourite statement. Fortunately, they're now experiencing their success through the achievements of their former students. Kudos!

Visible Improvements
Noticeably, there are also some improvements that help promote the place to newcomers. There is now a sizable Roman Catholic Church (which has been sponsored and built by one of the successful real estate developers - who is also from a known clan of the barangay)and a few-meter-break-water from the shore that provides convenience to those who travel by water taxis.
The long awaited pathway from the village to Caima National High School has finally been started and expected to finish in a couple of months (Summer time). A few meters that have been laid for quite a time now already gives convenience and relief to the students who walk daily to and fro.

And the good part is, the residents are all concerned to continuously do their best to contribute their unreserved talents and efforts for the improvement, cleanliness and beautification of the place.

The unfinished sea-wall or breakwater in Nabuslit is expected to resume construction to serve its primary purpose of protecting the villagers who are always living in fear every time there is a bad weather.

The Churches
Binahian is now the seat of the 22nd parish in the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Prelature of Libmanan (Created in 1989 December 9). The parish is named under the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua. Canonically Erected as a parish on June 13, 2002, the first pastor is a 29 year old Rev. Fr. Apolinar Rull Napoles Jr. There are nine (9) barangays being taken care of by the pastoral program and ministry of the Parish. Seven barangays are from the west mountain and seaside of the municipality of Sipocot (Bagong Sirang, Lipilip, Carayrayan, Gabi, Caima, Binahian, Manlubang), one from the municipality of Libmanan (Caima-Libmanan), and one from the municipality of Lupi (Bangon-Lupi).

A Born Again Christian Church, under the umbrella of Asian Christian Charismatic Fellowship, also thrives. Pastor Palermo and Pastor Joe Mangampo started sharing the Gospel/Good News - A Bible Based Doctrine- in the late 1970's.

Four lovely women, who in the long run became the four pillars of the small group, embraced and continued to stand firm in their faith, through thick and thin, which has attracted more and more attendees who are now under the care of Pastor Leopoldo Quipquip with the help of his wife.

Religious Events
Being the only Christian nation in Asia, religious events are observed everywhere. In this remote part of the country, the Barangay Fiesta is celebrated every 12th & 13th of June where the entire barangay wholeheartedly participates in the festivities. Aside from Christmas and New Year, this is the time where family members who live, work or study around Manila or other more distant parts of the country, come to join their loved ones in celebrating the festivities as part of the family tradition. This is one of the best times to have a family reunion.

Since the first day of the celebration falls on the 12th which is also the country's Independence Day, the school administration never fails to organize an academic parade involving the students, teachers and parents who are members of the PTA (Parents Teachers Association) prior to the day's activities.

Everyone has his or her own expectations. When the Barangay Officials and the Youth Leaders agree to make the celebration more meaningful, lively and fun, they will organise an amateur singing competition, a dance contest, beauty pageant, basketball tournaments and other sporting events. This gives the people of Binahian a great entertainment package and a well-deserved break from so much hard work.

Often on the second day there will be a water procession as a special occasion. Some of the neighbouring barangays also participate with their own fabulously decorated boats carrying their patron Saint(s).

Many salespeople from outside Binahian also take part and set up their tents where they display all their goods varying from a simple hair clip to fancy earings, talcum powder, clothes, shoes, kitchen ware, school supplies and all sorts of bric-a-brac.

Military personnel or the quaintly-called 'Men in Uniform' roam every street, ensuring safety and security for all. If you are lucky, you may even see them join in the festivities!

Medical Assistance
There is no hospital nor a good clinic yet that could give immediate treatment when a resident needs an urgent attention or any medical help. Provision of medicines at the barangay center is quite limited. So visitors are advised to have their own first aid kit.

However, the municipal health office stationed a midwife to assist the pregnant women for obvious reason. Volunteers who underwent the basic training in giving first aid lend a helping hand to the needy as well.

A photo of the barangay's local pharmacy is also available on the links provided below.

The Leadership
Just like any other community, Binahian is headed by a Barangay Captain who oversees the entire village with the assistance of the other Barangay Officials and volunteer peacekeepers. He also represents the people of the Barangay in any government conferences and/or meetings concerning any development, new policies and the like which he will, in turn, disseminate to the whole village afterwards.

As part of the leadership program, the younger generations are also encouraged to hone their skills for the future. Barangay Youth (Kabataang Barangay) is a successful youth organization which displays their ability and capability to lead in some activities in the village with the support of the Barangay Captain and officials.

A photo of an official list of the recent leadership is also available on the links below.

**By: The Author

*Just a few people knowing each other
*Treating everyone like a friend and a brother
*Calling each other on a first name basis
*Exchanging practical jokes to familiar faces

*The olds are all so cheerful
*The young ones, just respectful
*They are all warm and so friendly
*Where else would a simple man want to be

*It is a place called paradise
*Others adore it, they're mesmerized
*And once you’ve set foot on the shore
*You’ll love it here that is for sure

*Enjoy your stay, enjoy your time
*You can go swimming for a dime
*And if you’re friendly and so kind
*You’ll have it free so bear in mind

*Do not spoil our tiny place
*A humble plea when someone prays
*Be reminded and be careful
*We love this place, so please be mindful

*I can only write just as much
*And I’m pretty sure it’s not enough
*To describe the place where I was born
*And will always be where I belong

*It’s simply named Binahian
*Some say it wrongly but it’s fine
*It’s not how funny they may sound
*We know it’s here that joy is found
