FlightSafety International is the world’s leading provider of professional aviation training, as well as simulation equipment and software. Company training services are provided to both military and civil aviation organizations worldwide for fixed-wing, rotor and tiltrotor aircraft. It provided nearly one million hours of training in 2006. Founded in 1951 by A.L. Ueltschi, it was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway (see Warren Buffett) in 1996. |
FlightSafety provides pilot and maintenance technician training for a wide range of corporate aircraft; mission-specific training for helicopter pilots and crews; commercial and corporate flight attendant training; flight dispatch training; and simulator-based marine training. Ueltschi, 90, remains chairman of the company. Bruce Whitman serves as president and CEO. |

==75,000 Trained Each Year== |
FlightSafety is the factory-authorized trainer for the majority of today’s business jets and offers training for more than 300 different aircraft types. The company trains the pilots for the government leaders of more than 40 countries around the world. Some 75,000 aviation professionals, including 14,000 military personnel, train at the company’s facilities each year. |
FlightSafety operates 40 Learning Centers in the United States, Canada and Europe, using training technology designed and manufactured by FlightSafety. That technology includes high-tech classrooms, sophisticated flight training devices and the world’s largest fleet of some 230 top level full flight simulators. |
The company’s simulation division is responsible for a number of successes. |
* First to develop electric motion and control loading for simulators. |
* First to qualify rotorcraft simulators to the highest regulatory standards. |
* First to build a complete visual digital database of the continental United States and Europe. |
The company’s training technology is coordinated through the proprietary simulation program, MATRIX, which replicates the most advanced aircraft systems and operates from an off-the-shelf, Windows-based PC architecture. MATRIX pulls together a full suite of training technologies, including classroom desk-top computers, flight training devices, Level D full flight simulators and post-simulator-flight debriefing systems. |
==Factory-Authorized Trainer== |
FlightSafety got its first big boost in the 1960s, when Pan Am Airlines decided to import Dassault Mystere business jets, rebranding them as Falcon Jets in the United States. Pan Am included FlightSafety pilot training as part of the purchase price for the new jets. Since then, FlightSafety has been named the factory-authorized trainer for many of the major airframe manufacturers. |

The company also has had strong, longstanding relationships with other major manufacturers, including Bombardier Aerospace and Hawker Beechcraft. Many of FlightSafety’s learning centers are located adjacent to or nearby airframe manufacturing plants or major service centers. That allows customers to schedule service and training at the same time, and it ensures that its instructors are constantly in close contact with the manufacturers, keeping abreast of updates and latest best practices. |
==Specialized Training== |
In addition to aircraft operation and maintenance training, FlightSafety provides a range of specialized services such as hypoxia awareness training, which teaches pilots to identify their own unique response to oxygen deprivation so they will recognize the onset of hypoxia while they still have time to take corrective action. |
Another new program helps flight departments establish or refine a proactive security culture. In the recently launched ThinkSecurity Awareness Workshops, aviation security experts help flight crews and flight departments minimize security risk exposure. The course also helps flight departments comply with current foreign and domestic security requirements and evaluate and enhance current security efforts. |
