A purple screen of death (Also known as PSoD, purple screen of doom or purple screen) is the name of a fatal error. It is most known to happen in VMware ESX, although it is also known to happen on Windows Vista and the Nintendo DS Lite.

Windows Vista
It is possible to get a PSoD on Windows Vista. This can be caused by the WDDM drivers partially crashing and DWM not properly deactivating. It is caused by the video driver failing to render a dialog box after it stops responding in the grayed out tone, and is not a traditional screen of death in that there is no fatal error or need to restart the computer, and it does not take up the entire screen. ==Nintendo DS Lite==

It has been found that ejecting the Game Card while in the Nintendo DS's PictoChat will cause the system to crash and display the PSoD. While it is unknown why this happens, it is likely that it is caused by the fact that ejecting a Game Card while the system is running will cause it to freeze. This will not happen on any successors or the original DS; while the same glitch is doable and the screens go blank, the screen is a different color. Furthermore, the DSi, DSi XL (despite the manual saying not to do so), and 3DS allow for hotswapping (not to mention the 3DS does not have PictoChat anyway).

Ubuntu
Since Ubuntu 10.04, the splash screen of Ubuntu is purple. With some proprietary drivers, that of Ubuntu 11.04 is entirely purple. If it does not start, it may be considered as a “Purple Screen of Death”.
