Draft:Daniel Gottschling
I've moved a page you created, Daniel Gottschling, to the draft space. <s> The article doesn't yet show why the subject passes Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria, although I can see some promise in it, given Gottschling's work on yeast.</s> Too many of the references are published by organizations affiliated with the subject. Inserting more references to organizations that Gottschling doesn't work for is or part of will help show notability. Hog Farm Bacon 18:33, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
:Hi Hog Farm, I looked at Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria and found this:"Academics meeting any one of the following conditions, as substantiated through reliable sources, are notable." Gottschling meets two of the 8 criteria: 1. "The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level. 2. The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a National Academy of Sciences or the Royal Society) or a fellow of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor (e.g., Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

Both of those criteria are backed up with the following independent sources: NAS and NAS Award. I always thought members of the NAS were automatically considered notable, so I would like to thank you for showing me exactly where in Wikipedia it says that. Now I wonder if you can please "un-draft" the article, or explain to me how I can do it myself. Thanks again. MysticMoment (talk) 06:28, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
* I've struck the part about the notability, as after reading it, I was clearly wrong. However, the NAS sources are not independent of the subject, as he's a member of the NAS, so he's closely affiliated with the organization. I'll undraft the article, but it really needs sources that aren't affiliated with the subject in any way. Colleges he teaches at and organization he is members of are not independent sources. Hog Farm Bacon 14:38, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
:Hi Hog Farm, I agree that the sources from his colleges and other organizations that he is affiliated with are not independent, but I disagree about the NAS sources. At least not when it comes to his award and his membership. The problem with using his colleges as a source is that, obviously, he can write whatever biography he wants there, aside from the fact that he is a teacher there in a certain field. The NAS website is the BEST source to know if he is a member of the NAS. That fact, on that website, is completely out of his control. If it said on his bio on his college's web site that he was a member of the NAS, but was not corroborated on the NAS site, then yes, you cannot use that information from the college. I think this is just a matter of common sense. MysticMoment (talk) 07:40, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

I would appreciate an explanation about why you put Start Class on this well-documented article. What's missing? deisenbe (talk) 17:47, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
:Hi Deisenbe The assessment process, especially of "class" is highly subjective. Please look here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Content_assessment for more information.
