In 2001, Technip set up a spoolbase in Mobile, Alabama, to service the nearby Gulf of Mexico market. |

The spoolbase features permanently installed facilities and ancillary pipe stalk storage racks and roller systems to enable significant quantities of pipe stalks to be prefabricated and stored onshore. In addition, the spoolbase provides a facility for the assembly, storage, spooling and loading of rigid pipeline before installation, thus reducing transit time on subsea pipeline installation projects. |

Since its inception in 2001, the spoolbase has completed projects for over 15 operators in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Egypt and Angola. |

The facility consists of a 50-plus acre site, divided into 5 main areas: |

The spoolbase is capable of handling and welding pipe diameters up to 18" for reel lay, and up to 30" for quad/double joints for J-lay, as well as spool pieces. The pipe stalk storage racks have a capacity to store up to 600,000MT of completed pipe stalks. |

The fabrication building houses 2 independent welding lines, with alignement stations, individual welding a Non Destructive Examination (NDE) and Field Joint Coding (FJC) stations. |

The quayside area consists of 1 tie-in shed for standard flowline welding and VTU's (Vessel Tie-in Units) per line, for spooling of both single flowlines and, pipe-in-pipe assemblies onto the Technip reel lay vessel. |

A spoolbase is a shore-based facility used to facilitate continuous pipe laying for offshore oil and gas production.[1] The facility allows the welding of single or double joints (40' or 80') of steel pipe of 4" to 18" diameter, into predetermined lengths for spooling onto a reel lay vessel.
