Main page appearance
[edit]Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on January 9, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 9, 2011. If you think it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured article director, Raul654 (talk · contribs). If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions of the suggested formatting. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks! John L. Helm (1802-1867) was the 18th and 24th governor of Kentucky, although his service in that office totaled less than fourteen months. He also represented Hardin County in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly and was chosen Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives four times. In 1838 his sole bid for national office ended in defeat when his opponent, Willis Green, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After his service as governor Helm became president of the struggling Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Although he openly opposed secession during the American Civil War, federal military forces labeled Helm a Confederate sympathizer. In September, 1862, he was arrested for this alleged sympathy, but Governor James F. Robinson recognized him as he was being transported to a prison in Louisville and had him released. After the war Helm identified with the Democratic Party, and in 1865 Hardin County voters returned him to the state senate. In 1867 he was the state's Democratic candidate for governor. Despite his failing health, Helm made a vigorous canvass of the state and won the general election. He was too weak to travel to Frankfort for his inauguration, so state officials administered the oath of office at his home on September 3, 1867. He died five days later. (more...)

Adminship (#2)
[edit]Hi Acdixon. I don't know if we have ever crossed paths, but I do want to say that I have enjoyed reading your articles on the Governors of Kentucky (Congratulations by the way on Wikipedia:Featured topics/Governors of Kentucky). I know that Juliancolton asked you this in mid-2009 and you turned him down then, but I was wondering if you would be willing to reconsider running for adminship. I have been an admin for about 16 months now, and I have generally found that the best admins have been quiet, uncontroversial editors like yourself who use the admin tools every once in a while to deal with the small things in editing. I (and probably a number of editors) would be happy to write you a nomination statement if you so desire. NW (Talk) 04:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
- And what NW said!!. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 13:29, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
- I would be willing to write up a co-nom if you were interested in adminship. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 20:19, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks to everyone for your very nice comments regarding my becoming an admin, and sorry about my tardiness in responding. As I told Juliancolton way back when, the vast bulk of my editing is non-admin-type content improvement on non-controversial articles that few people read (although I'm glad you enjoyed reading some of them, NW!) That said, there have been a few times where it would have been nice to have the ability to, say, move an article over a redirect or semi-protect an article from IP vandalism (curbing the phenomenon of changing Murray State University's president's name from "Dunn" to "Dunnker" – an allusion to the university's mascot – comes to mind.) That was never enough to motivate me to apply for adminship before because I'd heard the process is a pain. With so many respected editors requesting that I do so, however, I feel I should consider it. Could someone give me a little primer on the process before we get the ball rolling? Acdixon (talk • contribs • count) 17:44, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sure thing. A nominator or yourself writes up an opening statement, generally listing your qualifications and stating why the encyclopedia would benefit from having you as an administrator. There are three questions that most candidates choose to answer—where they plan to use the tools, what work they are most proud of, and any major conflicts they have had. The nomination is then transcluded at WP:RFA, and people go and "vote"—support or oppose as they choose; opposes are generally required to be more detailed and backed by evidence but carry more weight than a single support by the closing bureaucrat. Voters can choose to ask optional questions which the candidate is encouraged to reply to. That's really about it. NW (Talk) 18:13, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Well, that sounds relatively painless. I believe I will take you and Wizardman up on your offer to write up a nomination, though. Please let me know where and when I need to start answering questions. Acdixon (talk • contribs • count) 15:01, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Wizardman would like to nominate you to become an administrator. Please visit Wikipedia:Requests for adminship to see what this process entails, and then contact Acdixon to accept or decline the nomination. A page has been created for your nomination at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Acdixon. If you accept the nomination, you must state and sign your acceptance. You may also choose to make a statement and/or answer the optional questions to supplement the information your nominator has given. Once you are satisfied with the page, you may post your nomination for discussion, or request that your nominator do so. |
You may answer the questions at any time before transclusion, and you can put it on the RfA page once NuclearWarfare gets his co-nom in. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:49, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- I added my co-nomination. Feel free to transclude it whenever you are ready. Good luck! NW (Talk) 18:34, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi :-) I'm thrilled to see the Governors of Kentucky promoted. Your work in this area has been superb both in the content and the way that you shepard the content through the review processes. Best regards, FloNight♥♥♥♥ 13:25, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Congratulations
[edit]Congratulations on the Governors of Kentucky Good Topic. That's an absolutely outstanding piece of work, and an example of what Wikipedia can produce when it has editors like you. It was a pleasure to participate in a couple of the reviews at FAC, and I look forward to seeing more of your work in future. Mike Christie (talk – library) 13:37, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
License tagging for File:KY-State-Penitentiary.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:KY-State-Penitentiary.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.
For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 04:31, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
A possible job for you
[edit]Hey. I was thinking about Kentucky-related articles, and to my surprise found out there's no Government of Kentucky article; it merely redirects to the state. We have ones on other states, i.e. Government of California, Government of Oklahoma, and from what I've learned reviewing your governors the government has a very intriguing history. There's a long-term project for you if governors ever start feeling boring. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 17:31, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors
[edit]Hi! I noticed your RfA, which seems to be going very well, and I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 14:54, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Thanks for your answer to my question at your RfA. Your answers looked too good and too coached (which I think was bothering others also) so I thought I should check. As expected, you just have a good head on your shoulders. Hobit (talk) 16:16, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
[edit]We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. kentucky education
[edit]Thanks for your feedback on my class project. I will look into adding information to the Kentucky education page. Of course, my project was to evaluate a page relevant to a larger project and not meant to suggest that this page was less detailed than other wiki pages. Some states don't even have education pages and those that do are much less than you have offered on yours. So, well done. Tmilfordhoyt (talk) 16:20, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Photo for Blackburn article
[edit]I found and uploaded File:Mississippi Boatman 1850 by George Caleb Bingham.jpg and thought it might be used in the Luke P. Blackburn article in the Early life and family section (probably left justified). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:58, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- I also wondered if this image of a pardon from Blackburn might be used in the article - it is old enough to be PD. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:02, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- I made the category (as you know, since you fixed the Default sort, thanks!). Do you want me to upload the pardon too? I was wondering if a {{Vertical images list}} or {{Multiple image}} template might work (vertical stack of the pardon and prison)? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:32, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- The pardon is at File:Blackburn pardon.jpg - I think I would have one caption across the bottom with Top and bottom identifiers (takes less space than two captions). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:45, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks - I tried it on the left side - feel free to revert if you prefer it on the right (I like alternating left-right images). Might want to ask the image reviewer to double check the new ones. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:20, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Commons issue
[edit]Thanks for the heads up. I left a note on User talk:Royalbroil (who is a Commons admin) to move the image. I also fixed the file description and removed it from the German Wikipedia article it was being used in (and left a note there). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:13, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Photographs of (former) Congress members
[edit]Hi, I noticed you uploaded several photographs of US Congress members to Commons. Thanks for that. You marked them as to be "FlickrReviewed". As there is no relation to Flickr, that is quite useless. I don't think there is much doubt about the copyright status, so a review doesn't seem necessary. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I posted a discussion of some of what I found wrong with the article on the Talk page, per your request. The article may be "Good" in terms of its content, but in my judgment was poorly organized and badly written in places.

William H. Cox, etc.
[edit]Hi, anyway you can find a full death date for him? I haven't been able to find anything, though I'm sure there's something out there. As for the signatures you've requested, I'll try and get to them sooner than later, I've been procrastinating a bit much lately. Also, out of curiosity, did you mean to not transclude Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/John Y. Brown (1835–1904)/archive2 at FAC? Connormah (talk) 05:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Good job with the expansion. I see our death dates differ - if the 15 isn't a typo, please do change it - your source is probably more reliable than a death index. Connormah (talk) 00:06, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Also, BTW, found an image of Thomas E. Bramlette (recall you mentioning at a FAC or something that you'd had trouble finding one). Unfortunately, it is watermarked (rather excessively, IMO) - I'll try and get it removed. Connormah (talk) 00:21, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks - I happen to know of a user who is great at removing watermarks - hopefully this one can be removed (strange, though some images on the site have smaller and larger watermarks than others...) Connormah (talk) 01:32, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Collab?
[edit]Hey. I was wondering if you would like to collaborate on an article when you have some time over the next few months. Namely, the article I was thinking about is Happy Chandler. It's an earlier GA so there's things that can be added in, plus I figured I could handle the commissioner stuff while you tackle the Kentucky stuff, so it wouldn't be overwhelming. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 02:39, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds great. It already looks pretty detailed so I may not need to add anything, but I'll take a look through nonetheless. If nothing else I'll try to order Moffi's book since that should have some good things to add. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 15:43, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
