WikiProject '''Lights Camera Wiki!''' is a collaboration of Wikipedians, the [http://openvideoalliance.org/ Open Video Alliance], and content partners to encourage broader public creation of video content for Wikipedia. [[meta:Wikimedia New York City|Wikimedia New York City]] is the main Wikimedia partner for this initiative.

==How to participate==
[[File:Sandbag operation at Venice Beach California, 2010-09-30.webm|thumb|right|Sandbag operation at Venice Beach pier in California. September 30, 2010.]]
To participate in video recording you will need access to a digital camcorder or still camera with video recording capability, a tripod, and a computer with video editing software.
One of the more successful way of training new folks in visual literacy is through patterns. One such pattern that is used in journalism circles is the "BBC 5 shot" pattern, pioneered by [[Michael Rosenblum]]. See the Venice Beach sandbag operation example below for an example of this. It states that good stories need shots of individuals, and might consist of this sequence as a start:
# Closeup on the hands
# Closeup on the face
# Wide shot
# Over the shoulder shot
# Unusual shot

See the page [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Makes Video/Video training]] for more information.
Some project subject-specific initiatives only require a desktop computer and some time, for example the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Lights_Camera_Wiki/Government|Government]] initiative only involves locating footage online and uploading it. Web resources such as the [http://archive.org Internet Archive] can also be a useful source for finding properly licensed media to upload.

All these should follow the basic visual literacy rules:
There are currently ten subject-specific initiatives that you can sign-up to participate in. You are also welcome to create new initiatives. It is not necessary to join one of the specific initiatives in order to participate.
#Frame the subject using the [[rule of thirds]]
#Don't move the camera, treat each shot like a still shot
#Don't cross the line of action. Stay on one side of the subject so that there is visual continuity

== Topics ripe for video ==
==Video workflow==
: '''''See [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Makes Video/Suggest]]'''''
===Shooting video===
When shooting please do not provide on-camera commentary or narration. This is to ensure that these videos are encyclopedic, have a neutral point of view, and can be used by similar articles in languages other than English. Remember, we are looking for videos that are simple and encyclopedic. Think about the sidebar illustrations in an encyclopedia—videos for Wikipedia should have this same encyclopedic quality, only in motion! Most videos should be between 1 and 5 minutes long.

====Tripod====
== Sample Videos ==
: '''''See [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Makes Video/Examples]]'''''
No matter what device you choose to shoot with, a steady hand is what we are looking for. Please use a tripod or other stabilizing equipment.

====Composition and camera movement====

The style of these videos are intended to be simple and clean. No quick zooms or handheld walk-throughs. Any movement within the frame (panning, tilting, or zooming) should be done slowly so that the viewer is able to focus on the detail of the images. Try and get a reasonable balance between shots with and without movement.

====Buffers====
* [[User:Fuzheado|Fuzheado]] | [[User talk:Fuzheado|Talk]] 16:09, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
If you are recording a shot with no camera movement or zoom, do not record for less than 5 seconds. If you are zooming, be sure to record 3 seconds before the zoom and wait at least 3 seconds after you reach the end of the shot. The same guidelines for zoom shots also applies to any shot that has movement (panning or tilting). Pay attention to the buffers and editing will be easier.

===Editing video===
Using editing software like imovie or windows media maker, import the video onto your computer to edit. Refer to instruction manuals for your specific software and camera learn how to import and edit.

[[Category:WikiProject Wiki Makes Video|!]]
In the editing process, think about opening your video with a shot that helps to establish the location of the site. (eg: the opening shot in the Grand Central Terminal video is of the front of the building with surrounding buildings.)

'''Do not include''' narration, titles, transitions, special effects (with the exception of image control effects ).

===Converting your video to Ogg Theora===
After exporting the video, you must convert the file to the [[Theora|Ogg Theora]] (.ogg/.ogv) format. The Xiph.org Foundation provides a [http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/TheoraSoftwareEncoders list of encoders] that will work across multiple platforms. Choose an encoder appropriate for your operating system, download it, and encode.

For more information on converting video, visit [[commons:Help:Converting video|Help:Converting video]] to learn more about how to do this.

===Uploading videos===
Videos should be uploaded to the [[Wikimedia Commons]] at [[:commons:Commons:Upload|Commons:Upload]], where they will be accessible to all of the different language editions of Wikipedia.

We recommend using the [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License].

Once you have uploaded your video, be sure to tag it with the <nowiki>{{LightsCameraWiki}}</nowiki> template. Instructions for using this template can be found at [[:commons:Template:LightsCameraWiki]].

===Embedding===
To learn more about video embedding visit [[Wikipedia:Creation and usage of media files#Video usage]].

If your using the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Enable_the_Add_Media_Wizard?withJS=MediaWiki:MwEmbed.js add-media-wizard] you can simply search for the asset by its title, or if its an asset you uploaded click on "uploads" then click your recent upload, and the insert it into the page.
