Visual literacy training

One of the more successful way of training new folks in visual literacy is through patterns. One such pattern that is used in journalism circles is the "BBC 5 shot" pattern, pioneered by Michael Rosenblum. See the Venice Beach sandbag operation example below for an example of this. It states that good stories need shots of individuals, and might consist of this sequence as a start:

Closeup on the hands
Closeup on the face
Wide shot
Over the shoulder shot
Unusual shot

All these should follow the basic visual literacy rules:

Frame the subject using the rule of thirds
Don't move the camera, treat each shot like a still shot
Don't cross the line of action. Stay on one side of the subject so that there is visual continuity
