Wikipedia Day Awards
Tampa Bay Wikiproject
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Since the wikiproject has expanded to the Tampa Bay Area instead of Tampa, should St. Petersburg and Clearwater be top-importance on the Wikiproject like Tampa (since redirects for those cities also come here) and some contents of their articles such as their history? The entry on Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is not up to date. It still lists the former CEO, who has been replaced due to the excessive mortality of the open heart surgery program. The program has been shut down until an investigation can be completed and the problem addressed. New administrators have been appointed. <!-- Template:Unsigned IP --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.178.222.206 (talk) 01:15, 12 December 2018 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Question for the project
Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
I am not a member of this Project, but this is of direct importance to this group, so I decided to raise this for discussion here first.
Right now, there are articles for Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Area, and Florida Suncoast, which seems to cover a whole lot of overlap. The Tampa Bay article and the Tampa Bay Area articles really need to be merged, and it's worth considering reworking the Florida Suncoast article to cover the same area as the Tampa Bay Area article. IOW, delete Collier, Lee, and Charlotte Counties, possibly Sarasota and Manatee counties as well (they are already covered by the Southwest Florida article, and I don't think the "Suncoast" moniker is used much south of Sarasota), and add Hernando and Pasco counties. Any thoughts? I'll wait a couple of days, and if I don't hear anything, I'll take it to the Florida WP. Horologium <small>t-c</small> 14:56, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
:I didn't realize all those articles existed. I say go for the merge - as long as information unique to each entry is retained, of course. Zeng8r (talk) 17:20, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I'd say merge, but there are subtle differences. The "Tampa Bay Area" means the core Tampa Bay MSA, plus other surrounding areas. These include Sarasota/Bradenton, and outlying counties such as Hardee County. When referring to Tampa Bay, one is speaking of the MSA (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties) only. Although I'm not sure the term "Tampa Bay Area" is notable enough to deserve a seperate article, since that use is VERY colloquial. The only field I see it carrying any weight is for news viewing areas.Blaze33541 (talk) 04:42, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
:As the articles are now written, the Tampa Bay Area article is far superior to the Tampa Bay article. The latter is filled with (unsourced) conflated charts and data encompassing three separate MSA's—Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater; Lakeland; and Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater is not part of a CMSA, which means that the outlying areas should not be included in the article. Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice is part of a CMSA with Punta Gorda, Lakeland is its own PMSA, and Hardee County is a μSA (Wauchula, FL μSA). The Tampa Bay article even has mentions of Red Sox games played in Fort Myers, which is a bit extreme. My suggestion would be to thin out the extraneous information from the Tampa Bay Area article, and use that as the primary information for wherever the article ends up. There doesn't appear to be much useful information in the Tampa Bay article. FWIW, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL MSA, the government's formal name for the census area, is a redirect to Tampa Bay Area, which reinforces my view that the article should be limited to the four-county region.
:Regarding the ACNielsen and Arbitron TV and radio market definitions (which don't match, of course), Arbitron considers the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater radio market to be the same four counties as the government's definition, but Nielsen includes Citrus, Polk, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee and Sarasota counties in the Tampa TV market. The Nielsen markets may be useful for viewing statistics, but they often make odd assumptions as to which market a county is allocated. Ocala is part of the Orlando market, but all of the stations broadcasting from Gainesville use the phrase "Gainesville-Ocala" or a variation in their advertising, and the two network stations have news bureaus in both cities. Only the NBC and Fox stations from Tampa are available on cable systems in Sebring, in Highlands County; the other networks are stations from Orlando and Fort Myers). Horologium <small>t-c</small> 19:58, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
::I really, really dislike the Wikipedia trend of using Census Bureau definitions as the sole source and arbiter of US geographic definitions, at the expense of all other sources. Yes the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater MSA consists only of Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas. But the State of Florida clearly intends Citrus, Manatee, and Sarasota to be included in the Tampa Bay Area, as evident by Senate Bill 506 (which started TBARTA). A strong case can also be made for Polk County, particularly the municipalities and communities between Plant City and Lakeland. And of course there is the (as yet) mythical Orlampa, which suggests at the very least that the Tampa Bay Area extends beyond the MSA boundaries. (Or soon will, if not now.) -- JeffBillman (talk) 22:21, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
:::The OMB definitions (it's OMB that defines the boundaries, not the Census Bureau) have the advantage of being a consistent measurement metric; the one-off citations (such as the Florida bill authorizing TBARTA) are not useful for definitions outside their one particular focus. If the article is to include areas outside the OMB definition, the redirect for the MSA is going to need to be turned into a full article, which will increase the overlap and duplication even more than now. Polk County (because of its size and location) is part of a tug-of-war between Tampa, Orlando and Florida Heartland over which area (if any) it should be included; by leaving it out of the discussions of each area (or briefly mentioning is, as is done in Greater Orlando is probably best. == Manatee and Pinellas counties ==
Question; Why are articles on subjects ib Manatee and Pinellas counties being put in this project? Charles Roser was added today. It pertains only to St. Petersburg and Anna Maria. There are other articles in St. Pete and Pinellas Park. the main St. Pete article is not included. It understand the project is a city project, not a regional one. If it's a regional one, then it should be Tampa Bay or some such, which raises the question stated above as to what is included. On a side note the Orlampa thing probably should be SaintPeteOrlampatona or the I-4 Corridor. == Tampa vs Tampa Bay Area ==
OK, so the project's "WikiProject Tampa", which, as a St. Pete resident, leads me to believe that it's strictly about topics on the east side of the Bay. However, as I'm reading, it says "and surrounding areas." That makes me conclude that it's Temple Terrace, Carrollwood, Town 'n Country, Brandon, Riverview, etc. But then I find the template for this project on the Rays article. Seeing as that's in St. Pete, and not Tampa, does this project include the <b>entire</b> Bay Area? If so, why is this project so narrow in its title? Can't it be changed to "WikiProject Tampa Bay", like DFW has WP:WikiProject Dallas-Fort Worth, and the <i>other</i> Bay Area has WP:WikiProject San Francisco Bay Area? Calling it just "WP Tampa" misrepresents the area and makes it seem to anyone not familiar with the area as cities like St. Pete and Clearwater (two of the largest cities in the state, with St. Pete cracking the Top 80 in the country) are nothing more than glorified suburbs of Tampa. However subtle, things like this is why St. Pete isn't recognized as its own city in this country.
Can we change the name to "WikiProject Tampa Bay" to include everyone, especially if the project is <b>supposed to</b> include everyone to begin with? If we can, I'll join in a heartbeat! EaglesFanInTampa 13:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
It's been a few weeks and I haven't gotten a single response to my inquiry, which I find odd. Either that means that no one cares or no one works on this project. In either case, that means no one would mind if I was being bold and changed the project name myself. It's completely biased to exclude the Bay Area as a whole from the name while saying it "aims to coordinate improvment (sic) efforts on articles related to Tampa, Florida and the surrounding area." So, I plan on correcting that issue by the end of the week. Any objections? ::Since there isn't a wikiproject for St. Pete or anywhere else around here (right?), I say go for it. Maybe it would breathe some life into a project that's been dead in the water for months... Zeng8r (talk) 21:38, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Also, I tried to make a new category for members of the project - Category:WikiProject Tampa members - but may not have been successful since nobody else's name shows up.

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:29, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Florida Chapter? Tampa Bay chapter?
Do we have enough active wikipedians in Florida to form a chapter? I've created an entry for Florida at the Wikimedia United States Chapters Council page. If a state-wide chapter will be too unwieldy, perhaps chapters based on the larger cities could be formed (i.e., South Florida, central Florida, northern Florida). -- Donald Albury 21:05, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

:Unfortunately, there hasn't been nearly enough Tampa Bay-based editor activity lately (or over the past couple of years) to justify a local chapter, imo. A state-wide chapter seems more likely. Zeng8r (talk) 21:35, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

::I was afraid of that, but had to ask. Let's see if a state-wide chapter gets any traction. -- Donald Albury 02:43, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Tampa Bay Wikiproject

[edit]

Since the wikiproject has expanded to the Tampa Bay Area instead of Tampa, should St. Petersburg and Clearwater be top-importance on the Wikiproject like Tampa (since redirects for those cities also come here) and some contents of their articles such as their history? Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital

[edit]

The entry on Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is not up to date. It still lists the former CEO, who has been replaced due to the excessive mortality of the open heart surgery program. The program has been shut down until an investigation can be completed and the problem addressed. New administrators have been appointed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.178.222.206 (talk) 01:15, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re-starting the Project

[edit]

I think that we should attempt to re-start this project. It would be nice to have another group of people dedicated to making the Tampa Bay Area pages look better. --Cooper Norfolk (talk) 19:15, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

At the very least, it should be converted into a Task Force, similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Long Island, which was converted into a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject New York (state). ---------User:DanTD (talk) 13:16, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2021 and forward

[edit]

If the project were to be active, the main thing would be to get more people to join. I imagine a lot of wiki editors live in Tampa which is a young city that is growing fast. AustinZeli (talk) 18:19, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User script to detect unreliable sources

[edit]

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

 • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from cite web, cite journal and doi.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
