The first hot air balloon flight in Ayrshire made its maiden voyage from the field next to New Pebble Park on 14th May 1909. The pilot was a Hungarian Tram engineer called Andres Steinkov. Steinkov had moved to Scotland 20 years previously and his family had settled in Annbank by the late 1800s. His flight had been the result of many years of meticulous planning and several failed attempts. The inaugural flight reached its destination of nearby village Tarbolton. On landing in his destination Steinkov proclaimed "menka janto weebel" which in Hungarian means "came, conquered, won". It is still considered one of the greatest feats ever achieved in Ayrshire. |
