The purpose of Shaymin in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.<ref name=ign> Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire Review (page 1) Ign.com. Shaymin's name is a portmanteau of the words shy or shame, since it lives far removed from humans, and the Japanese word for seed. |
==Biological characteristics== |
Shaymin is based on the hedgehog. Its body's fur is pure white. Instead of quills, Shaymin has green grass growing on its back, which causes its appearance to resemble that of a Chia Pet. Shaymin has pink flowers growing on the sides of its head, giving it an even more plant-like appearance. It has stubby paws and seems to have a smiling expression on its face. |
Shaymin resides in the Flower Paradise, a flower field untouched by humans. In order to go unnoticed by intruders or attackers, it utilizes its own form of camouflage: it can roll up into a ball resembling a flower. By doing so, it blends in with the surrounding flowers, going undetected even if the attacker is right next to it. It also has the power to decompose the toxins in the air and turn the land into flower fields in an instant, proof of its status as a legendary Pokémon and a benevolent being. |
In Floaroma Town, a lady talks to the protagonist about how the town came to be a large flower garden. The land where it was used to be a useless wasteland. Fortunately, people noticed this and began planting flowers to make it more beautiful. Unfortunately, good will and luck wasn't enough. Due to the wasteland's infertile soil, not a single sprout grew. One day, someone thanked nature for its beauty and wonder with prayers. The whole wasteland suddenly grew warm and flowers began to bloom and burst forth from the ground. The awe-struck people took steps and called the area Floaroma. This "someone" is highly guessed as Shaymin, due to its power to create a flower field at will, though it was most likely Shaymin that brought fertility to the area's desolate soil, not the person who thanked nature. Also, more proof is that the Flower Paradise, where Shaymin resides, resembles Floraroma Meadow for its large perimeter and flower field. There is also proof of Shaymin's ability to turn the land into a flower field when the player does the Shaymin event. After engraving the name the player chooses to thank into the white rock at the end of route 224, a pathway extending to Flower Paradise appears. Shaymin comes down from the path, and in its wake, flowers sprout. |
==In the video games== |
Shaymin makes its first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS along with many other new Pokémon. |
Shaymin is one of the event legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl; the other ones are Manaphy, Darkrai, and Arceus. Like Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, and Manaphy, it has a base stat value of 100 for every stat. In addition, it is the first pure Grass-type legendary Pokémon. |
Shaymin is obtainable through a Nintendo event, which will provide the player with Oak's Letter; Oak's Letter is used at a white rock in Route 224 in order to unlock Shaymin's flower-lined home, the Flower Paradise. Shaymin appears there at level 30. |
A major glitch was announced by Game Freak which enabled the capture of Shaymin (along with Darkrai) in early copies of the Japanese version despite the fact that it is an Event Pokémon. Nintendo released a patch to rectify this glitch to certain retailers, and it has been fixed in the game's translated versions. |
