How do you feel about diving for page numbers at [[Nine Inch Nails]]? :{{reply|Laser brain}} I'll just be honest, a trip to the library is unlikely for me, despite the ample number of them nearby. I like to think I'm pretty good at finding online sources, so if I can find any suitable replacements I'll use those instead of the print sources. I can have that done by the end of the day today. Any remaining page needed templates would indicate my efforts were unsuccessful. So I don't know if you want to hold off going to library just yet, but of course go for it if you feel inclined! Huge thank you for helping out! &mdash; '''[[User:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:black; font-style:italic">MusikAnimal</span>]] [[User talk:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:green">talk</span>]]''' 17:12, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

'''Software changes this week'''
* The [[mw:MediaWiki 1.25/wmf17|new version]] of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 17. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 18 ([[mw:MediaWiki 1.25/Roadmap|calendar]]).
* On Wednesday your [[m:Special:MyPage|Meta user page]] will be shown if you don't have a user page on a wiki. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2015-February/001092.html] [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Help:Extension:GlobalUserPage] [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T72576]
* You can now change the order of categories in VisualEditor using drag-and-drop. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T52809]
* In VisualEditor, you now need to make a change before you can "Apply Changes" to citations and templates. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T57976]
* The way the cursor moves in VisualEditor is changing. Your browser now handles the cursor directly. Most of you will see no change. In right-to-left text, the cursor now moves in a 'visible' rather than 'logical' way. This is like other sites but you may be surprised at first. [https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/177946/]

'''Meetings'''
* The VisualEditor Team had their first public bug triage meeting on February 11. They will post the results on [[mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal|the meeting page]]. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-February/080803.html]
* You can join the second weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on [http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20150218T08&p1=224&ah=1 February 18 at 16:00 (UTC)]. See [[mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal|how to join]]. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2015-February/076781.html]
* You can join a meeting with the developers of the Content Translation tool. It will be on [http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20150218T1300 February 18 at 13:00 (UTC)]. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-i18n/2015-February/000973.html]

'''Future changes'''

== Hello from [[User_Talk:George8211|George8211]] ==

Regarding your spamublock script (obviously I'm [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Darrell_Brock_Jr.&diff=647964626&oldid=647952443 not an admin]), perhaps it would be useful to also have it check the user's contribs? &mdash;[[User:George8211|George8211]] / [[User talk:George8211|T]] 21:20, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
:{{reply|George8211}} Hmm I could make it at least check if they're not autoconfirmed, otherwise throw a warning to the admin to check the contribs and make sure the account is advertising-only. Thing is if the user has a promotional username, is promoting their company/organization on their user page (to the extent that [[WP:G11]] unambiguously applies), it's almost always advertising-only. This happens frequently, and is picked up by [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchFilter=499 Special:AbuseFilter/499], which targets only new users. <span style="font-family:sans-serif">&mdash; <span style="font-weight:bold">[[User:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:black; font-style:italic">MusikAnimal</span>]] [[User talk:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:green">talk</span>]]</span></span> 21:29, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure why this article wouldn't be important. While it could be considered "opinionated" - aren't most of the others? They are reports given by someone with an opinion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pc72orf (talk • contribs) 23:18, 23 February 2015 (UTC) Not to mention the fact that it is a letter specifically addressed to Jeff Smisek. == Regarding [[Egg (disambiguation)]] ==

I saw the entry
* EGG, a file format used by [[ALZip]] software
but if you look above that, there's
* [[EGG (file format)]], a compressed archive file format used in computers
so I removed the less descriptive one. I know these entries are talking about the same "EGG" file format because [[EGG (file format)]] mentions [[ALZip]].
That is my justification, and I do consider my edit constructive. What do you think? [[Special:Contributions/149.164.164.245|149.164.164.245]] ([[User talk:149.164.164.245|talk]]) 16:45, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
:With [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Egg_(disambiguation)&diff=648806491&oldid=646506051 that edit] you changed the description [[Evaporating gaseous globule]] to read "a type of interstellar gas ''butt''". == Hello from [[User_Talk:Digagecivrights|Digagecivrights]] ==

My edit on the Chantilly, VA article DOES explain why. It states "Air & Space museum and other relevant photos were kept because they are notable features of the community and NOT advocacy, opinion or PR." If you do not think that is detailed enough, again, that is a value judgment rather than truth--since there was an explanation. If you don't *like* the explanation, that is different. Further details are provided on my talk page--you should read them. [[User:Digagecivrights|Digagecivrights]] ([[User talk:Digagecivrights|talk]]) 16:20, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

The edit intended to undo was [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Chantilly,_Virginia&diff=648804132&oldid=648803939 this edit], where you removed a large amount content, much of it sourced, and used no edit summary. To be clear, I have no particular interest in this subject, I just ran across while [[WP:RCP|patrolling recent changes]]. Blanking material is a common form of vandalism, so it is standard practice that patrollers will revert such removals when no rationale is given. That's it, so no worries about giving more in depth explanation, just try to remember to use edit summaries. :{{reply|George8211}} Hi! I believe I see what is going on. You were admirably trying to help the new user create a page for that organization. We of course [[WP:AGF|always assume good faith]], but when a user whose username is the same as the organization they are unambiguously trying to use Wikipedia to promote, it's probably safe to say they're an advertising-only, single-purpose account, and should be reported to [[WP:AIV]] (or in this case [[WP:UAA]] as it is a [[WP:U|username violation]]). Using Wikipedia for advertising is [[WP:NOTADVERTISING|strictly prohibited]]. This is why I deleted [[User:Ninja Division Publishing]] and [[Draft:Ninja Division Publishing]] and blocked the account indefinitely. I'm also not certain that organization meets the [[WP:NORG|notability guideline]], so future efforts to create an article may not serve fruitful anyway. In general, if a subject is notable enough someone unaffiliated with the subject will eventually create an article for them. This may all seem harsh, but spam and advertising is an ongoing problem, with companies, bands, etc using Wikipedia's powerful search engine presence as a means of promotion. In the end it's an encyclopedia aimed at providing reliable, neutral and noteworthy information so we unfortunately have to shut out those who are not interested in that overall goal. == Hello from [[User_Talk:Wendy Alexander|Wendy Alexander]] ==

Hi, you just removed the link I posted to Susan Block's wiki and referencing The Great American Think Off... I am new to posting to wiki and I recently discovered Susan Block and want to update her page as much as possible. How should I include such articles and is it possible to be referred to a great wiki page upon which I can base my updates so I'm not doing it wrong? I will take any help you can give please and thank you [[User:Wendy Alexander|Wendy Alexander]] ([[User talk:Wendy Alexander|talk]]) 20:30, 25 February 2015 (UTC) Wendy A - 2.25.15
:{{reply|Wendy Alexander}} Hey! The only issue with your edit was that it was adding an external link to the body of an article. In general, this is not preferred as it may be interpreted as using Wikipedia for advertising. E.g. posting links to drive traffic to those websites. I see now that is probably not what you were trying to do. Were you trying to add a reference to support that Block was praised in the Great American Think-Off? See the [[WP:INT|introduction to referencing]] to learn how that works. The easiest way however with an external link is to just type <code><nowiki><ref>http://example.com</ref></nowiki></code> next to the sentence you want to support with the reference. I've added a welcome template to [[User talk:Wendy Alexander|your talk page]] which you might find useful in acquainted with Wikipedia. Hi MusikAnimal, I am trying to figure out how to fix the biographical info and the NPOV that's been posted on the top of the Susan Block page... how do I ascertain which items are the offensive ones in order to rectify them? Thanks so much! You totally rock! <small><span class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:Wendy Alexander|Wendy Alexander]] ([[User talk:Wendy Alexander|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Wendy Alexander|contribs]]) 16:08, 26 February 2015 (UTC)</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:{{reply|Wendy Alexander}} Those templates were added quite some time ago. At first glance the article seems ok for sources, but it being a [[WP:BLP|biography on a living person]] it's important to ensure anything contentious or likely to be challenged is reliably source. More at [[WP:BLPSOURCES]]. As for the NPOV tag, that's someone saying that the content is not entirely neutral in tone, perhaps written by someone affiliated with the subject. Maintaining neutrality is simple: Just write as if you've no particular interest in the subject, but rather are just trying to state the facts, disregarding any opinions. When you feel this has been addressed I can take a closer look. Also note the [[Talk:Susan Block|talk page]] is a great way to discuss issues about the article. Others can chime in and give their opinion on whether or not the references and neutrality issues are still valid. <span style="font-family:sans-serif">&mdash; <span style="font-weight:bold">[[User:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:black; font-style:italic">MusikAnimal</span>]] [[User talk:MusikAnimal|<span style="color:green">talk</span>]]</span></span> 03:21, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

The inaugural GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists.

The winner of the 2014/2015 GA Cup is {{U|Jaguar}}! He earned an impressive 615 points, despite only being a wildcard in the Round 4. The key to Jaguar's success seemed to be reviewing lots of articles as well as reviewer the oldest nominations; he reviewed 39 nominations in this round. Overall, the key to everyone's success was reviewing articles that had been in the queue for at least three months, which was true throughout the competition. In second place was {{U|Wizardman}}, with 241 points, and following close behind in third place was {{U|Good888}}, with 211 points. Congrats!

Although there were a couple of bumps along the way, the judges have thoroughly enjoyed managing this competition. We hope that the participants had fun as well. The GA Cup was a resounding success, and that's due to all of you. The judges sincerely thank each and every participant, and for the editors who were willing to subject their articles to this process. We learned a lot. For example, we learned that even with meticulous planning, it's impossible to anticipate every problem. We learned that the scoring system we set up wasn't always the most effective. The enthusiasm and motivation of Wikipedians is awesome, and we enjoyed watching what was sometimes fierce competition. We look forward to the second GA Cup later this year.

We reached many of our goals. See [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Good_articles/GA_Cup/Statistics here] for GA Cup statistics. We made a big difference, especially in shortening the length of time articles spend in the queue, and in reducing the backlog. Overall, 578 nominations were reviewed throughout the competition and a total of 8,184 points were awarded. Everyone involved should be very proud of what we've accomplished through the GA Cup. Stay tuned for more information about our next competition.

There will be some much-needed changes made in the scoring system next time. We appreciate your feedback, and commit to seriously consider it. If you haven't already, please fill out the feedback form '''[https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1KzYGNdshVTBreWeqISqrudx9pbHZlcNjvcUqEqxwV4w/viewform here]'''. If you're interested in being a judge in our second GA Cup, please let one of our judges know or click on the tab found in the feedback form.

Again, thanks to all and congratulations to our winners!

Cheers from {{noping|Dom497}}, {{noping|TheQ Editor}} and {{noping|Figureskatingfan}}.

@Cyphoidbomb: Blocked for one week. I don't want to go much beyond that as it could just as easily be a throwaway and they'll move on to the next IP. Sounds like the disruption is not that frequent, so blocking on a case by case basis may be best. However if it continues and is specific to certain pages we can consider semi-protection. Hello from Ecepeliter

Hello,

My previous page (:Contemporary Istanbul) has been deleted by you. I am fully aware of your reasons.

Contemporary Istanbul is an international art fair and quiet established, premier art fair of the region, Istanbul. Also, this year, Contemporary Istanbul's 10th anniversary. This is not an exact advertisement of a corporation. It is really important for people to know Istanbul and its cultural side.

If you allow me to write on this subject, I will be glad.

Thank you, Ecepeliter (talk) 12:38, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

@Ecepeliter: Hey there! Your article was deleted because it did not make a claim of significance, and to make matters worse was completely unsourced. I've looked into the topic, and I actually think it may meet our notability guideline. We'll have to dive deeper, however. Let's start up a draft article, so we don't have to worry about it being immediately deleted. Your article is now available at Draft:Contemporary Istanbul. Let's keep a few things in mind (1) try to include sources for all information. See WP:REFBEGIN on how to add references. (2) Try to maintain an encyclopedic tone. We don't want to make it sound like we're trying to encourage readers to attend the festival. Just state the facts and disregard any opinions.
Before we add more content, let's first try to compile a list of sources that help establish the subject's notability. I've done a Google custom search and found a good amount of sources here. Go through them and look for news organizations, newspapers, etc, as those are considered reliable. But a newly created user, User:Gertude Seagars, contested the G10 speedy of Raina Mittal (" I think this is preposterous. Why would you delete such quality information."). This account was created at 10:42, 29 January 2015. Another user, User:Gertude Seagar, was created at 10:41, 29 January 2015 - one minute earlier. The older account has no edit history, but it makes me suspicious of a possible sockpuppet/vandal. But there's nothing to report to WP:SPI or WP:AIV. Is there any way to see if either user or WP:DUCK socks created the attack page in the first place? --Drm310 (talk) 17:03, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

@Drm310: Undoubtedly the same person, but without contributions I wouldn't consider it abuse of multiple accounts, even though they're likely WP:NOTHERE to begin with. Maybe they accidentally forgot the "s" in their name on the first account creation so they just made a new one. — MusikAnimal talk 17:07, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

GA Cup - The Finals

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 5/Final

GA Cup competitors and observers: Get ready, we're about to move into the finals of the inaugural GA Cup! Not nearly as important as another competition taking place this weekend, but significant none the less. No deflated footballs here, though!

Thursday saw the end of Round 4. Out of the 8 contestants in the semi-finals, 5 have moved to the finals. The semi-finals continued to be very competitive. The highest scorer overall was Ritchie333 from Pool B, with an impressive 488 points and a total of 36 articles reviewed, the most of any competitor; close behind was Jaguar (last round's wildcard), with 477 points and 29 reviews. At times, the competition between them was a real horse-race, and exciting for the judges to witness. Both Ritchie333 and Jaguar have moved onto the finals. In Pool A, Good888 with 294 points, and Wizardman with 179 also won slots in the final. 3family6 with 285 points, won the wildcard slot. We also had one withdrawal, due to outside-of-Wikipedia priorities. Congrats to all!

Although there were just 8 competitors, more reviews were conducted this round than in any other round—148, which demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm of our participants. The most successful competitors, like in all previous rounds, reviewed articles that languished in the queue at GAC for at least five months (worth 18 points). The Boat Race articles were popular review choices again, with almost 20% of the articles reviewed this month.

In other news, we received another report from GA statistics page maintainer User:AmericanLemming. See here [1] for his take on the effect the GA Cup has had on Good Article reviews. He believes that we've made a real difference. AmericanLemming says: "As you can see, ...the GA Cup has done wonders when it comes to getting the oldest nominations reviewed much sooner thanks to the system whereby you get the most points for reviewing the oldest articles." Everyone involved with this competition, especially the competitors, should be very proud of what we've been able to accomplish!

The Final will start on February 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on February 26 at 23:59:59 UTC with a winner being crowned. Information about the Final can be found here.

Good luck to all our finalists!

Cheers from Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

Possible sock of Nikolas.Sudarpo

Hello there, MusikAnimal. I suspect Jonathan.Jesse (talk · contribs) is another sock of Nikolas.Sudarpo (talk · contribs). The account was created just two days after Rodrigo.Suarez, Sr (talk · contribs) and their master were blocked. Thank you very much for your reverts. I would suggest reverting deeper to before any of Heb138's edits due to the obvious unencyclopedic nature of the content that user added. I would do it but I'm afraid of running afoul of WP:3RR. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 15:48, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

@Stevietheman: Yeah I don't know what's going on over there. Keep in mind you can revert copyright violations anytime, that is 3RR exempt. Much of the content the user added is from branham.org among other sources. I've revdel'd all the obvious violations. — MusikAnimal talk 15:56, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the additional reverts and refreshing me on that aspect. I'll keep that in mind. But I have to say I always feel funny even giving the appearance of edit warring, even if the reverts are exempt. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:03, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News 2015—#1

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's appearance, the coming Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. Upcoming plans are posted at the VisualEditor roadmap.

The Wikimedia Foundation has named its top priorities for this quarter (January to March). The first priority is making VisualEditor ready for deployment by default to all new users and logged-out users at the remaining large Wikipedias. You can help identify these requirements. There will be weekly triage meetings which will be open to volunteers beginning Wednesday, 11 February 2015 at 12:00 (noon) PST (20:00 UTC). Tell Vice President of Engineering Damon Sicore, Product Manager James Forrester and other team members which bugs and features are most important to you. The decisions made at these meetings will determine what work is necessary for this quarter's goal of making VisualEditor ready for deployment to new users. The presence of volunteers who enjoy contributing MediaWiki code is particularly appreciated. Information about how to join the meeting will be posted at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal shortly before the meeting begins.

Due to some breaking changes in MobileFrontend and VisualEditor, VisualEditor was not working correctly on the mobile site for a couple of days in early January. The teams apologize for the problem.

Recent improvements

The new design for VisualEditor aligns with MediaWiki's Front-End Standards as led by the Design team. Several new versions of the OOjs UI library have also been released, and these also affect the appearance of VisualEditor and other MediaWiki software extensions. Most changes were minor, like changing the text size and the amount of white space in some windows. Buttons are consistently color-coded to indicate whether the action:

  • starts a new task, like opening the ⧼visualeditor-toolbar-savedialog⧽ dialog:  blue ,
  • takes a constructive action, like inserting a citation:  green ,
  • might remove or lose your work, like removing a link:  red , or
  • is neutral, like opening a link in a new browser window:  gray.

The TemplateData editor has been completely re-written to use a different design (T67815) based on the same OOjs UI system as VisualEditor (T73746). This change fixed a couple of existing bugs (T73077 and T73078) and improved usability.

Search and replace in long documents is now faster. It does not highlight every occurrence if there are more than 100 on-screen at once (T78234).

Editors at the Hebrew and Russian Wikipedias requested the ability to use VisualEditor in the "Article Incubator" or drafts namespace (T86688, T87027). If your community would like VisualEditor enabled on another namespace on your wiki, then you can file a request in Phabricator. Please include a link to a community discussion about the requested change.

Looking ahead

The Editing team will soon add auto-fill features for citations. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to contribute to the Citoid service's definitions for each website, to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections.

We will need editors to help test the new design of the special character inserter, especially if you speak Welsh, Breton, or another language that uses diacritics or special characters extensively. The new version should be available for testing next week. Please contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF) if you would like to be notified when the new version is available. After the special character tool is completed, VisualEditor will be deployed to all users at Phase 5 Wikipedias. This will affect about 50 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh. The date for this change has not been determined.

Let's work together

Broken China

I am wondering why you reverted my edits on Broken China a few days ago. Every section in that article had been duplicated, and I was trying to fix that. Did I maybe not document my edit well enough? For the record, the article is now repaired. - Mranonemoss (talk) 23:59, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

@Mranonemoss: Nope, you explained what you were trying to do very well, and I was working hastily and did not realize the entire article was indeed duplicated. While patrolling recent changes, I noticed with your edit you removed the infobox, several sections and the references. This appeared like a mistake to some degree, but if I had taken a moment to look into it further it would have been clear you were doing the right thing. For the record, I did not treat your edit as vandalism, but good-faith. Either way, you were 100% right and I was 100% wrong, and I offer my apology. Thanks for your efforts, and I'd also like to formally welcome you to Wikipedia! I've left some links on your talk page that you may find useful. All the best :) — MusikAnimal talk 00:55, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

NIN page numbers

How do you feel about diving for page numbers at Nine Inch Nails? I have access to a couple of libraries and can start looking up books and magazines, but I don't want to duplicate efforts if you're already planning to do so. --Laser brain (talk) 17:04, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

@Laser brain: I'll just be honest, a trip to the library is unlikely for me, despite the ample number of them nearby. — MusikAnimal talk 17:12, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello from Kelley Elliott

The wiki-link you replaced for Geneva on the Lake [see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva-on-the-Lake,_Ohio] for the Finger Lakes article is not correct for this article about the Finger Lakes in New York. I explained this in my reasoning for changing this link and adding a correct external link [7]. The link you replaced is for Ohio, not for the villa mentioned in Geneva in New York State. The external link I added is for the correct villa, and there is not a wiki article about this villa. Could you please change it back to what I had?Kelley Elliott (talk) 18:59, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@Kelley Elliott: Hey there! Sorry for the confusion. If the original internal link went to wrong place, that's fine, we can fix it. I believe the most fitting would be Geneva, New York. Now, as for the external links: We have a policy on what can link to outside Wikipedia. Links like the one you added can be interpreted as being promotional. E.g. using Wikipedia to send traffic to those sites, which is not allowed. That being said, if there's no article on Wikipedia about a subject, and you think there should be one, be bold and create it! Use the article wizard to expedite the process, and be mindful subjects need to be notable to have their own page on Wikipedia. I'm going to remove the external links you added once again, just understand this is per policy. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal talk 19:07, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi MusikAnimal. Twice now an IP has tripped this filter and only had a couple of edits disallowed, yet the test interface shows most if not all edits should have been picked up and disallowed. Any idea why? Thanks, Sam Walton (talk) 08:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

@Samwalton9: I'm baffled. I'm going to look more into the technical limitations of the abuse filter, as that's the only thing I can think of that would cause this behaviour. If it turns out filters are failing because of the condition limit or what have you, we may be able to get the bar raised a little. Times have changed, and since the abuse filter was first introduced we have much beefier servers that can handle a bigger payload. I'll let you know what I find out! — MusikAnimal talk 16:38, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. If you want some more data points for your investigation, the latest IP which should have been flagged is 109.9.36.111 who didn't get picked up at all, unlike the other two who at least had a couple stopped. Sam Walton (talk) 16:57, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
It's almost certainly the condition limit. The limit is there as I understand it, not for performance reasons, but to prevent Denial of Service from either mistakes or rogues. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:49, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
@Zzuuzz: Do we need to get removing useless and improving poorly optimised edit filters then? Sam Walton (talk) 09:55, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
@Samwalton9 and Zzuuzz: Every once in a while I'll go through all the active filters, find ones that haven't had hits in a while (say, 3 months) and ask the authors if I can disable them. Other filters you might find can be merged in with older ones. Either way, the need more filters will seemingly only increase... I just feel like we have a real problem on our hands and we need to brainstorm a solution. Should I open a phab report, perhaps? — MusikAnimal talk 16:08, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
Something needs doing; just found another filter I monitor which isn't working properly either. If you think a phab report is the right way to go about solving this then go ahead (I know little to nothing about how that side of Wikipedia works), I'll go through and find some unnecessary filters in the meantime. Sam Walton (talk) 22:02, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Is Special:AbuseFilter/499 doing anything useful? It seems to be working well and it could be useful to tag edits, but that's not happening right now. Sam Walton (talk) 22:16, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
@Samwalton9: As far as I know that filter just for monitoring. It might get auto-reported to AIV, not sure, but personally I regularly check the log to perform the all-too-common {{spamusernameblock}}. MusikAnimal talk 22:25, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Mr.Z-bot doesn't auto report for that filter but if you do monitor it then fair enough. I've sent a few messages around regarding some seemingly inactive filters to see if they can be turned off. Is there documentation somewhere regarding this condition limit? Special:AbuseFilter implies to me that we're not hitting the limit. Sam Walton (talk) 22:30, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@Samwalton9: I'm just as confused about all the condition limit stuff. The full documentation for abuse filter extension is at mw:Extension:AbuseFilter but it's still unclear if we've a real problem. The points zzuuzz makes about DoS attacks makes sense but I feel like there'd still be some wiggle room for us to increase the bar a tad. I'd like to find out more before filing a phab report, so I've asked about the condition limit at mw:Extension talk:AbuseFilter#Condition limit should you wish to chime in. Thanks for going through all the old filters! Surely plenty of them that could be disabled or merged into other filters. MusikAnimal talk 01:25, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Michael Reagan Page

Hello MuskiAnimal, I am new to wiki and as such am curious about the inner workings of the edit process. I do have a question though, I did make an edit on Michael Reagans page concerning a slanted point of view for a biography and noticed that truthchek deleted it. I also took a glance and observed that all his edits are on that page dating back to August of last year. Is it common for people to edit their own pages? It seems he and another editor kept going back and forth. If an edit is made is a consensus needed before hand or only if deleted? Thanks for your help. Hope to hear from you soon. P.S. great user name :) Jobes38 (talk) 03:26, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

@Jobes38: Hi there! That article has been a mess as far as I can tell, lots of edit warring which is something we strive to avoid. Everything is of course a collective effort. If Truthchecx and others are affiliated with the subject in some way, they shouldn't be editing the article as it may be difficult to avoid a conflict of interest. To answer you question, autobiographies are strongly discouraged for the same reason. Consensus is generally not needed unless the material in question has been challenged. Obviously, there's a lot of content being challenged on that article or else there wouldn't be so much edit warring. That being said if there's something that's been disputed before you should probably get some input before re-adding it. The article talk page is where that should happen. If consensus cannot be established, seek dispute resolution. Finally, since this is a biography on a living person, it's extremely important to refrain from adding any contentious material that is not well-sourced and relevant. In a nutshell, be bold but not reckless, learn as you go along, take advice when given, but don't ever feel discouraged. Wikipedia is about having fun :) Hope this helps! Disarm and Other songs

Hi. I do understand that it would be hard to believe for you that substantial parts of these songs were composed and recorded into a taperecorder in the 1980's by me (Raghu V. Acharya) back when I lived in Madison and DeForest WI in my pre-teen and teenage years. These songs somehow got into the hands of other artists and I have yet to be compensated. It is dubious that all these songs came out in the 1990's after I took a Study Abroad trip to India in my Junior year of college. I believe they think I just left for good. I will leave it at that, but all of these songs (and a few more) are substantially mine. I have very clear memories of my songs in that taperecorder and just one example "Disarm" was about a very specific act of physical violence inflicted upon me as a toddler by my father. (I needed surgery many years later as a 15/16 year old.) In fact, I remember sitting in the living room and my sister came out after listening to the song and telling me she liked it as she quoted my lyrics: "Cut that little child." I remember telling her to shut up because I was writing and singing about such a personal subject. I am constantly writing poems and creating melodies and songs and I know all these artists somehow got a hold of them. Again, I have not even been compensated. Thank you. (Raghu V. Acharya, St. Paul MN). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.91.184.189 (talk) 18:14, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi there again. I'm not sure what you want me to do. Wikipedia is not going to compensate you for your work. This is an encyclopedia. Everything needs to be verifiable. The claims you make are very much disputable, so unless you can provide a reliable source, your additions are not welcomed. I'm sorry, that's how it works. Thank you for your understanding. MusikAnimal talk 18:35, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Uh hi...I am obviously not saying that Wikipedia needs to compensate anyone and I do know it's an encyclopedia. I was talking about getting compensated by Music publishers. They're my songs and I do need to get compensated. That's how America works. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.91.184.189 (talk) 19:28, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for creating the {{Talk header preload}} template i use on my user talk page. It has been very helpful for new editors who try to ask me a question! Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 22:31, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

We chattered about this one on IRC a little while ago - my attempt to make my user talk page more user friendly. It seems that cleaning up the interface clutter on the talk page and especially the {{Talk header preload}} you created had a (very) positive effect on its user friendliness. Counting recent and archived section headers i believe about 90% of the sections on my talk page are now asked trough the template rather than trough directly editing the page. Aside from that there is a clear increase in the amount of questions asked - all of which were placed in a near separate section as opposed of them being added at random by confused users. Hello from Niimki

You just deleted my posting on the Proclamation form the 1995 Sacred Assembly. I cited the source in the last edit for starters. Secondly it is not copywritten by that site. They posted it as a blog to help announce the proclamation. I was in attendence of that assembly and helped draft this item. There is no listing of it on wikipedia. The Sacred Assembly itself is noted but links to the proclamation are dead. Probably because nobody can get it up past the stupid deletions and auto bot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niimki (talkcontribs) 17:20, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

@Niimki: Hey! Sorry you're having trouble. When there is no copyright notice on the webpage, we have to assume it is copyrighted. This is simply for legal reasons. Normally you could donate the text for use on Wikipedia, however in your case it may need to be rewritten, as the content had a very strong promotional tone. Using Wikipedia for advertising purposes is strictly prohibited. This may not have been your intention, but you may have to work to make the content more encyclopedic, sticking to sourced facts, disregarding any opinions. For instance, rarely will you ever see an article written in the first person point of view. Finally, on Wikipedia there is a notability guideline that subjects of articles must meet. Please ensure your subject meets these qualifications or it may get deleted again, even if put in your own words. I'm sorry my advice could not be more favourable. If you so desire, you can draft the article and submit it for review using the article wizard. But I'd make sure the subject is notable before going any further. Let me know if you need help :) MusikAnimal talk 17:33, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

xtools-articleinfo is not working.

Hello,

I've just discovered the tool xtools-articleinfo. But, unfortunately it does not work ; always displaiyng the same message "No revisions found" whatever the page (by example : japan). Is there something special to do ? This tools did work yesterday.

In advance, thank you for help.--ContributorQ (talk) 16:04, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

I guess it was the replication databases that was acting up, not xtools itself. I had to get the other maintainers to confirm that. Anyway should be working now! :) MusikAnimal talk 21:35, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Hello,
yes, it is ok now. Thanks and best regards.--ContributorQ (talk) 01:06, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello from George8211

Regarding your spamublock script (obviously I'm not an admin), perhaps it would be useful to also have it check the user's contribs? —George8211 / T 21:20, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

@George8211: Hmm I could make it at least check if they're not autoconfirmed, otherwise throw a warning to the admin to check the contribs and make sure the account is advertising-only. Thing is if the user has a promotional username, is promoting their company/organization on their user page (to the extent that WP:G11 unambiguously applies), it's almost always advertising-only. This happens frequently, and is picked up by Special:AbuseFilter/499, which targets only new users. MusikAnimal talk 21:29, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

I saw the entry

  • EGG, a file format used by ALZip software

but if you look above that, there's

so I removed the less descriptive one. I know these entries are talking about the same "EGG" file format because EGG (file format) mentions ALZip. That is my justification, and I do consider my edit constructive. What do you think? 149.164.164.245 (talk) 16:45, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

With that edit you changed the description Evaporating gaseous globule to read "a type of interstellar gas butt". That is not constructive. Removing the duplication is, though, which I have now re-done. MusikAnimal talk 16:50, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
LOL, that isn't the first time my Cloud-to-Butt chrome extension has gotten me in trouble. I didn't know it would affect Wikipedia editing. Thanks for catching that. 149.164.164.245 (talk) 17:10, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello from Digagecivrights

My edit on the Chantilly, VA article DOES explain why. It states "Air & Space museum and other relevant photos were kept because they are notable features of the community and NOT advocacy, opinion or PR." If you do not think that is detailed enough, again, that is a value judgment rather than truth--since there was an explanation. If you don't *like* the explanation, that is different. Further details are provided on my talk page--you should read them. Digagecivrights (talk) 16:20, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

@Digagecivrights: Hi there, sorry for the confusion. The edit intended to undo was this edit, where you removed a large amount content, much of it sourced, and used no edit summary. Looks like the software I used undid a bit more than I had intended to, so sorry about that. To be clear, I have no particular interest in this subject, I just ran across while patrolling recent changes. Blanking material is a common form of vandalism, so it is standard practice that patrollers will revert such removals when no rationale is given. Similarly, it is standard practice to always provide an edit summary in these situations so that others, including the patrollers, are aware of your intentions. That's it, so no worries about giving more in depth explanation, just try to remember to use edit summaries. Thanks! MusikAnimal talk 16:36, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. That content was actually content that I added yesterday, which another user removed along with all of the same edits your software removed. I undid those edits, but went back in and deleted the content you referenced above as a concession to this person who said I violated NPV. I couldn't imagine what this person perceived the violation to be other than that. Digagecivrights (talk) 17:19, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello from George8211

Regarding Ninja Division Publishing, I apologise if I was too soft. They say they are BellaKunoichi, but could not work out how to create a page for Ninja Division Publishing (google / news), so created a new account under that name. Since you're an admin, what should I do now? —George8211 / T 21:28, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

@George8211: Hi! I believe I see what is going on. You were admirably trying to help the new user create a page for that organization. We of course always assume good faith, but when a user whose username is the same as the organization they are unambiguously trying to use Wikipedia to promote, it's probably safe to say they're an advertising-only, single-purpose account, and should be reported to WP:AIV (or in this case WP:UAA as it is a username violation). Using Wikipedia for advertising is strictly prohibited. This is why I deleted User:Ninja Division Publishing and Draft:Ninja Division Publishing and blocked the account indefinitely. I'm also not certain that organization meets the notability guideline, so future efforts to create an article may not serve fruitful anyway. Best MusikAnimal talk 22:06, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
I thank you for your reply, and see what you imply. Your words are of use, to protect Wikipedia from abuse. From spammers who clamour, and vandals who scandal. —George8211 / T 22:16, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

@The Cross Bearer: Now at User:The Cross Bearer/Cloverton (band). I just want to thank you for your timely assistance. The Cross Bearer (talk) 05:13, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Not a problem! I'd consider this was an uncontroversial restoration. It's been over two years since the article was deleted, notability could easily have changed. MusikAnimal talk 05:20, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
So, I have to ask, what do you think about it right now that I updated the sandbox article? The Cross Bearer (talk) 07:49, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Great work! It's a substantial expansion from the version that was deleted via discussion, so you don't have to worry about WP:G4. The concerns before were the group didn't have any mainstream chart hits, which they evidently do now. You've also added some solid sources, so in my opinion it looks notable enough for the mainspace. I'm sure you know about moving pages? Cause we'll want to move as opposed to copying and pasting to retain the history for attribution purposes. MusikAnimal talk 16:05, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
It has been a tremendous pleasure working with you on this article. I just want to thank you for your capable assistance on this matter. The Cross Bearer (talk) 23:33, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello from Wendy Alexander

Hi, you just removed the link I posted to Susan Block's wiki and referencing The Great American Think Off... I am new to posting to wiki and I recently discovered Susan Block and want to update her page as much as possible. How should I include such articles and is it possible to be referred to a great wiki page upon which I can base my updates so I'm not doing it wrong? I will take any help you can give please and thank you Wendy Alexander (talk) 20:30, 25 February 2015 (UTC) Wendy A - 2.25.15

@Wendy Alexander: Hey! See the introduction to referencing to learn how that works. The easiest way however with an external link is to just type <ref>http://example.com</ref> next to the sentence you want to support with the reference. I've added a welcome template to your talk page which you might find useful in acquainted with Wikipedia. Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to contact me if you need any more help moving forward. Best MusikAnimal talk 20:46, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi MusikAnimal, I am trying to figure out how to fix the biographical info and the NPOV that's been posted on the top of the Susan Block page... how do I ascertain which items are the offensive ones in order to rectify them? Thanks so much! You totally rock! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wendy Alexander (talkcontribs) 16:08, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

@Wendy Alexander: Those templates were added quite some time ago. At first glance the article seems ok for sources, but it being a biography on a living person it's important to ensure anything contentious or likely to be challenged is reliably source. More at WP:BLPSOURCES. Also note the talk page is a great way to discuss issues about the article. Others can chime in and give their opinion on whether or not the references and neutrality issues are still valid. MusikAnimal talk 03:21, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

2014-2015 GA Cup Wrap-Up

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Finals/Wrap-Up

The inaugural GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists.

The winner of the 2014/2015 GA Cup is Jaguar! In second place was Wizardman, with 241 points, and following close behind in third place was Good888, with 211 points.

See here for GA Cup statistics.

If you haven't already, please fill out the feedback form here. If you're interested in being a judge in our second GA Cup, please let one of our judges know or click on the tab found in the feedback form.

Again, thanks to all and congratulations to our winners!

Cheers from Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.
