The classifications and criteria listed below should be used to rate an article's importance to the task force, which prioritizes articles that are most likely to be researched and visited by readers seeking more information on roller coasters. Those with the higher importance have a greater need to be well-written and complete. In some circumstances, the ''popularity'' of a subject may lead to a higher importance rating than another subject with greater ''importance'' to the industry.

Ratings are subjective, so editors may not always agree on the proper classification. Questions or concerns should be posted at [[WT:WikiProject Amusement Parks]].

==Parentage==
Descended from [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Amusement_Parks|Wikiproject:Amusement Parks]]

==Structure==

A suggested overall structure for roller coaster articles has been proposed below:

* Most roller coaster articles should begin like this:<br>''<nowiki>(coaster name) is a ([[Wooden roller coaster|wooden]] or [[Steel roller coaster|steel]]) [[roller coaster]] located at (park name) in (park location).</nowiki>''<br>Other important information (such as current records) should come immediately after this intro.
* An infobox, which should be accompanied by a picture that best shows what the coaster has to offer. There should ideally be a [[train (roller coaster)|train]] in this picture.
* Basic facts and trivia about the coaster, such as location, records held (past and present), events (such as accidents and major malfunctions) appearances in fiction.
* A "walkthrough" of the coaster, a listing of all the [[:Category:Roller coaster elements|elements]]. These should be linked. The location of the [[on-ride camera|camera]] should be included if the coaster has one.
* A template linking to all the other roller coasters in the park, listed alphabetically.

==Referencing==
Probably one of the biggest problems facing ''all'' of the projects on Wikipedia. All articles must be backed up by reputable sources, as outlined by [[WP:REF]] - not an easy task. RCDB will already be linked to in the infobox, so other sources such as press releases, online news reports and park websites are your best options. Unfortunately, material from forums is not allowed as it does not constitute a reliable source.

==Photography==
All articles should have an image included, if you come across an article lacking an image then just add the term "''|imageneeded=yes''" to the {{tl|RollerCoasterProject}} template on the talk page. This will automatically place the page into the category [[:Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of roller coasters]], where you can see a complete list of roller coaster articles requiring images.

When adding an image, add it to one of the following categories:
*[[:Category:Images of roller coasters]]
*[[:Category:Roller coaster logos]]
*[[:Category:Roller coaster artwork]]

==Article Naming Standards==
It will normally be necessary to search for a coaster on the [http://www.rcdb.com Roller Coaster Database] in order to determine the correct article title. Follow this guide based on what you find:
* One coaster of that name found, name is unambiguous: Title should simply be "Coaster Name". Example: [[Kingda Ka]]
* One coaster of that name found, name is ambiguous (could refer to something other than the coaster): Title should be "Coaster Name (roller coaster)". Example: [[Patriot (roller coaster)]]
** Optionally, also create a redirect to the article at "Coaster Name (rollercoaster)".
* Multiple coasters of that name found, but they are all "clones" of the same coaster: Write one article covering all the installations of that coaster, using one of the above standards depending on name ambiguity. Example: [[Batman: The Ride]]
* Multiple ''distinct'' coasters of that name found: Title should be "Coaster Name (Park Name)". Example: [[Corkscrew (Cedar Point)]]
**Also, in this case, create a disambiguation page, or if it exists, link to the new article on it (see below).

===Disambiguation pages===
It will be necessary to create a disambiguation page when there are multiple distinct coasters that share the same name. This page should be titled the same way as a coaster article: "Coaster Name" if the name could only refer to the coaster, or "Coaster Name (roller coaster)" if it could refer to something else. It should ''not'' be titled "Coaster Name (disambiguation)". It should follow this layout:
<pre>
There are multiple roller coasters named '''Coaster Name''':
*[[Coaster Name (Park Name)|Coaster Name]] at Park Name <!--repeat this line for each coaster-->
{{disambig}}
</pre>

However, if there is ''already'' a disambiguation page at either "Coaster Name" or "Coaster Name (disambiguation)" for non-coaster related uses of that name, simply add the coaster-related disambiguation entries to a "Roller coasters" section on the ''existing'' disambiguation page. We don't want one disambiguation page to link to another. In this case, "Coaster Name (roller coaster)" should redirect to the coaster section on the disambiguation page.

Example: [[Cobra (disambiguation)#Roller coasters]]

Also, this should be placed at the top of each coaster article linked to on the disambiguation page:
<pre>{{for2|other roller coasters named '''Coaster Name'''|disambig page link}}</pre>

Scope

[edit]

Welcome to the Roller Coaster task force! The purpose of this task force is to standardise and improve all roller coaster related articles on Wikipedia.

To do

[edit]

Importance scale

[edit]

The classifications and criteria listed below should be used to rate an article's importance to the task force, which prioritizes articles that are most likely to be researched and visited by readers seeking more information on roller coasters. Those with the higher importance have a greater need to be well-written and complete. In some circumstances, the popularity of a subject may lead to a higher importance rating than another subject with greater importance to the industry.

Ratings are subjective, so editors may not always agree on the proper classification. Questions or concerns should be posted at WT:WikiProject Amusement Parks.

Status Template Notability Examples
Top {{Top-Class}} Subject is a crucial aspect of the roller coasters task force. This includes articles covering coaster types and technology, as well as coasters with historical significance. Wooden roller coaster
The Racer
High {{High-Class}} Subject covers significant manufacturers, prolific people, and coasters that have set notable records or are widely-recognized within the industry. This also includes articles covering models with multiple installations at multiple parks. Vekoma
LaMarcus Adna Thompson
Kingda Ka
Mid {{Mid-Class}} Classification covers most roller coasters, particularly those with at least some recognition outside of their respective region. Lesser-known companies and individuals may be classified here as well. Apollo's Chariot
E&F Miler Industries
Low {{Low-Class}} Subject is a loosely-related aspect of roller coasters, or may represent a product that is themed to roller coasters. This also includes coasters and companies that are unfamiliar to most readers. Euthanasia Coaster
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3
??? None Subject is of unknown notability. Articles of unknown importance and have not been rated.

Categories

[edit]

Placing articles into categories is now done automatically by the infobox. It will add any page including it to these categories, as long as the appropriate parameters are filled out correctly:

  • Roller coasters
  • Park Category
  • Manufacturer Category
  • Primary (wood or steel) and secondary type categories
  • Height category (Hyper, Giga, Strata)

If you see any redlinks in an infobox, check to ensure you have filled all fields in correctly and leave a message on the talk page if the problems persists.

Articles about types of roller coasters and roller coaster elements should be placed into Types of roller coasters and Roller coaster elements, respectively.
