Summary

[edit]
Non-free media information and use rationale true for Maurice Duplessis
Description

A Grande Noirceur beer label from the microbrewery Dieu du Ciel! of Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, Canada, trimmed for clarity of the main image

Source

A trimmed image from here. Copyright held by the brewery, earliest detected use in 2014. Claimed as fair use regardless.

Article

Maurice Duplessis

Portion used

Uses the main portion of the beer label, but a smaller portion would be impractical as only the whole image conveys the sense (and the pun) behind the name.

Low resolution?

Yes (61200 pixels)

Purpose of use

The image serves as an illustration of how a commercial entity may use the negative connotations of the rule of the article subject, Maurice Duplessis (shown in the centre of the image), the notion of "Great Darkness" (see Grande Noirceur) to advertize dark beer. The phenomenon of making puns on historical events in the history of Quebec to advertize products is described in some historical works, notably « Boire la nation imaginée ». Une analyse ethnosymbolique de la bière de microbrasserie au Québec by Dufour and Poitras (Journal of Eastern Townships Studies, 2022). It is also essential to show the popular perception of the rule of Maurice Duplessis.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this label, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The use of this image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to use the original for intended purposes. In particular, the quality of the image is too low to be able to produce labels identical to those used on the beers.
