Hi, you recently added an unreferenced tag to Harry Howard (footballer). Blocked due to open proxy

I received a notification today (And it's not the first time) that I have been blocked from editing because of the meta:No open proxies rule. The last time this happened, I contacted User:DerHexer about it, and his response to me was that port 80 was open on my IP address. He ignored my attempts to explain why. So I'm explaining why here:

• I use an ADSL connection with a dynamic IP address
• I have a home network, with two PCs on a LAN connecting through a Windows Server 2003 machine with Internet Connection Sharing enabled
• I run a website http://www.communicate.za.net/ from that machine (And use a Dynamic DNS-type service to update my DNS server (http://www.everydns.net/) whenever my IP address changes)
• Port 80 is open to allow users to connect to the above website. To the best of my knowledge, the only IP addresses that are allowed outgoing access through that server are in the 192.168.4.* range

If any users online can use that server as a proxy, to connect to the Internet at large through, I'd appreciate it if someone with technical knowledge can help me to disable it. If not, then I ask that the block be lifted, as my server is not an open proxy! GrahamDo (talk) 11:07, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Request for advice

Merry Christmas.

I have been contributing to wikipedia for some years. I have never sought to be an administrator as I would not place myself before the adolescent thugs who think they own the project. (They know who they are.)

I have been trying to work out the current situation regarding auto-formattig of dates. I read you comment made at 6:19 on 27 Oct 08 on the Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)/Date autoformatting page. I agree with them. I can't really see any point in the general use of date linking. However I am very attached to auto-formatting of dates.

I find "February 18, 2004" very off-putting. It detracts from my reading of the encyclopedia. I prefer "18 February 2004". In the past I [[ ]] linked dates so that all who had set preferences (presumably the only people who care) could view the dates in their preferred mode. I was told this was "deprecated". Okay, I thought, I won't link dates whichh are already in my preferred style but I will link those in any other style. I'll cut down my linking by being less considerate to those who use other than the British style.

I now find a bloody bot rampaging around wrecking the date linking I put in. As I said I'm not wedded to linking but the dates should be formatted or we'll all become Americans at an accelerated pace. What can now be done? Avalon (talk) 19:34, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello GrahamDo. I see that you have been a contributor on Wikipedia for some time, which is why I am surprised that you apparently wrote an article about yourself. As per Wikipedia's policy on autobiographies, this is a strongly discouraged practice. It is difficulty to write a neutral, factual and verifiable article about oneself.

Many of your references are to blogs, which by definition are self-published sources and therefore unreliable. Please supply some secondary sources that have an established reputation for fact-checking and editorial oversight - otherwise the material will likely be challenged and/or removed. --Drm310 (talk) 19:56, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for the concern!

I felt that, as a published author now, my works and I were encyclopedic enough to warrant a Wikipedia article, but I couldn't count on any of my readers to write one.

I was very careful to not reference any sites that I have control over (such as my website), because I wanted to AVOID the potential COI, and it was never my intention to continue to make heavy edits to the article. I was hoping at least one person from the community would pick it up and run with it.

I honestly never knew about the problem with the self-published sources, but I've cited ISBNs for all my books now, which hopefully helps to mitigate that somewhat.

If you wish, please remove all text that you can't find substantiation for in a source that isn't self-published, and I will continue to look for other sources.
