Palace Hotel, Perth GA Review: on hold
Palace Hotel, Perth GA Review: on hold
I have reviewed the GAN of Palace Hotel, Perth, and have placed the article on hold. I did the review prior to seeing that the nominating editor had retired, and I figured I'd leave a message here in case editors wanted to assist in fixing the minor issues to help the article reach GA. I will also leave a message on another related WikiProject talk page to get more editors to possibly assist in the workload. The majority of the changes should be easy to fix and shouldn't take too long. If you have any questions let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

I have reviewed Andriyivskyy Descent for GA Sweeps to determine if it still qualifies as a Good Article. There are three categories for fascist architecture, Germany Portugal, and Italy. Franco's tomb would certainly qualify. But,,, theses are really just Art Deco buildings. The Art Deco buildings the Italians built in Italy are not different stylistically than the ones they built in Eritrea. I think these categories should be moved from facsist to Art Deco.Historicist (talk) 22:20, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

I wonder if I might trouble you to read this little section on Giano's page about improving the architecture article? I think really what's needed is some input to get a good heading structure, after which I'm fairly confident the article will pretty much write itself - any views or opinions? --Joopercoopers (talk) 20:59, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

As far as I can see offhand, en-wiki has no equivalent article to :fr:Lambrequin; Lambrequin is a redirect to Mantling, which is about heraldry. Is there an article elsewhere that should be interwiki'd to :fr:Lambrequin? And should we perhaps turn Lambrequin into a disambiguation rather than a redirect?

Comments requested on Infobox Swimming Pool
As part of a collaboration on creating articles for Lidos in the UK, a Swimming Pool Infobox has been created (for an example in use, see Broomhill_Pool, Ipswich). The key time for building lidos was in the 1930s and many now have Grade II and some Category A status due to being increasingly rare public buildings with Art Deco designs. I'd welcome your comments on Template talk:Infobox Swimming Pool for improvement. Would anyone object to this template being added to WP:WikiProject Architecture/infobox?—Speedoguy (talk) 10:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Fascist architecture

There are three categories for fascist architecture, Germany Portugal, and Italy. Franco's tomb would certainly qualify. But,,, theses are really just Art Deco buildings. The Art Deco buildings the Italians built in Italy are not different stylistically than the ones they built in Eritrea. Architecture Database (geographicaly taged)

What if we could have access to all the buildings that are allready in Wikipedia like in an Architecture Database? I mean, imagine we would like to know all the buildings that exist in a specific city. That happens a lot, when we want to travel. We could use all the information we allready have in a more operative way, organizing it and having access to it geographicaly. Do you think this could be mande inside Wikipedia? Combining this with specific adress or even the coordinates, it could be a real help to all the people here, who for sure like architecture and travelling to see it. We could also have it listed by architect ore by time. Even buildings without article could be there, just with a small reference so you could know it exists and maybe search information about it elsewhere ore later creating an article for it. --Vasco.cortez (talk) 16:34, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

"Interstitial space": a mess

I found a short messy article called "interstitial spaces" (plural), and it surprised me by dealing with architecture rather than with what I thought of as any of the usual meanings of that term. Obviously it was incorrect to use the plural, so I tried to move it to "interstitial space" (singular), but there was already a far more substantial article there, also on architecture. So first I redirected the plural to the singular, wiping out the plural article.

Then some further searching yielded the interstitial disambiguation page, which treated biology and physical and mathematical sciences (i.e. what I think of as the usual meanings of the term "interstitial space", as opposed to the architectural meaning), and did not link to the architecture article.

Then I

 • redirected the plural "interstitial spaces" to that disambiguation page,
 • moved the architecture article to interstitial space (architecture),
 • added the architecture article to the disambiguation page.

The disambiguation page is still in a distinctly suboptimal state.

And interstitial space (architecture) is an orphaned article: nothing links there except the disambiguation page.

If there are topics lists and other articles that should link to it, then get busy.

I originally found the plurally-title "interstitial spaces" article by following a link that made me expect biology, not architecture. So these articles have been neglected. Michael Hardy (talk) 18:54, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Interstitial spaces is, I discovered, a valid topic which could be linked to Building services engineering - except that article is so general, it has no comparable links that might make this appropriate. Not very helpful I know. ProfDEH (talk) 08:17, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Raised on columns

The first of five principles of Le Corbusier (from Villa_Savoye):

 1. The pilotis, or ground-level supporting columns, elevate the building from the damp earth allowing the garden to flow beneath ...

Question: is there a generally accepted short English term for it (one, two, at most three words) (only considering modernist buildings) ?

The term 'piloti' (I assume you mean) is rarely used except to refer to Corbusier's buildings. Normally they are simply columns. ProfDEH (talk) 18:26, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi all. A query has come up regarding this article which I think you may be able to help with. This building initially received a fair bit of media attention as it would've been the tallest building in Wales, but the project was subsequently cancelled. The subject passes WP:GNG in my view, but is there any precedent for keeping or deleting articles on cancelled building projects? Bettia (talk) 10:02, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Don't know of wiki precedents. The fact that a building proposal is not built only means that is not notable as a building, however the architectural design could be. There are numerous examples of unbuilt projects which entered architecture history (Tatlin's Tower, Welthauptstadt Germania, etc.). That being said, the project presented at Bay Pointe doesn't appear to be notable in architectural design terms - there is no reference in this regard. Therefore I suggest removing it from Wiki Project Architecture. The article could be however notable as a structure (i.e. civil engeneering) or in urban planning (bold proposal to change the city's skyline). Or, in case the peninsula is called Bay Pointe, not only the project, it could be that the place is notable. Elekhh (talk) 10:52, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Lambrequin

As far as I can see offhand, en-wiki has no equivalent article to fr:Lambrequin; Lambrequin is a redirect to Mantling, which is about heraldry. Is there an article elsewhere that should be interwiki'd to fr:Lambrequin? And should we perhaps turn Lambrequin into a disambiguation rather than a redirect?

Commons:Category:Lambrequins seems to indicate that the English word would be pelmet, but our article Pelmet seems to be about a different (albeit related) architectural element. - Jmabel | Talk 03:18, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Lambrequin is the french word for pelmet. Both the English and French articles are a bit vague about the definition: the French one includes fretwork ornament which is certainly outside the definition of 'pelmet' in English, maybe not in French though. I'll add a bit to Pelmet. In English 'lambrequin' is only used in heraldry. ProfDEH (talk) 12:14, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
So is there an English-language term specific to decorative fretwork at the top of a window, as in the examples below? - Jmabel | Talk 18:18, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
I have heard scrollwork a few times but mostly "gingerbread" or "gingerbread trim". Binksternet (talk) 18:41, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Fretwork or gingerbread are applicable. See third image illustrating the difference - a pelmet has a function and can be completely plain. ProfDEH (talk) 10:36, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Churches - notability and Manual of style

Hi - I have ventured here as I am currently creating articles about churches in Southampton, starting with St. Mary's. Before I get too stuck in, can I ask a few questions:

 1. Is there a Manual of Style for churches?
 2. Is there a defined Notability threshold for churches? Those I have done so far are all listed buildings so pass on those grounds, but is there any bar on creating an article on a small 20th-century church with no architectural merit?
 3. Should the name of a church begin "St." or "St" (without the stop)?
 4. I see some articles refer to, say, Shirley Parish Church rather than St James' Church, Southampton. Which is correct? Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 20:13, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

GA reassessment of Vilnius Castle Complex

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found some concerns with the referencing which you can see at Talk:Vilnius Castle Complex/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 22:50, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Architecture forum

This must have seemed like a good idea, but those forum pages are little used. Everything on the forum could just as well be on this page instead. ProfDEH (talk) 22:58, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Yes, probably is better to remove the links to the forum, as it isn't used at all, but only makes orientation within the WikiProject more difficult. Elekhh (talk) 11:37, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I removed the Forums section altogether. The four forums are hardly used (one is completely empty) and it's probably better to have a lively talk page in one place. Views on this are requested, to confirm the change.

I'm not sure what to do about the content. The only more or less current issue on all 4 forums was about Drywall and I've put a link to the forum at Talk:Drywall. But maybe they need archiving / redirecting / a notice saying use the talk page instead - expert help needed here. ProfDEH (talk) 08:26, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Naming conventions (architecture)

I am creating comprehensive naming convention about architecture.

And i am asking all of you to join, edit, talk about it here, and make some new good guide for the architecture articles. Wiki must have one! Tadija (talk) 13:33, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Queen Anne Style architecture

It is proposed to split Queen Anne Style architecture into sections: Queen Anne in England (possibly UK), Queen Anne in the US, Stick style including Eastlake Style, and Shingle style. Please comment at the talk page if you can.

PS doesn't anyone know how to archive old stuff on this page? ProfDEH (talk) 08:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Cannot sign up!

I have written quite a number of articles on architecture and have attempted to sign up. But I can't find the template you mention. Can you sign me in. Thanks. Ipigott (talk) 16:34, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

You're in! I put the project's userbox on your userpage in case you wish it. You can easily remove it if not. Welcome! Binksternet (talk) 17:07, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Tudor period DYK opportunity

There's a planned press release from at least two Wikimedia chapters (UK and Sweden) for an upcoming image donation from the Mary Rose Trust scheduled for January 3. It's going to be accompanied by a major update of the article on the Mary Rose and the Anthony Roll which are going to be nominated as DYK for the day of the press release. If anyone here is interested in joining in to make that day into a naval/Tudor period theme day for DYK, check out Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Scheduling a DYK date.

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)/archive3

The current FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)/archive3 is getting fairly mature. We just finally overcame an oppose from one of the toughest reviewers on WP, but need some supports to get the article approved.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:55, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
