On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

WikiWednesday Follow-Up
Great to meet you at WikiWednesday this week; I emailed you as a follow-up, though fear I may have typed the address incorrectly so wanted to check-in here. Thanks! FULBERT (talk) 18:15, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
:FULBERT I did not get your email for some reason. I just emailed you. Thanks for writing - I would talk more as you like by email, video chat, phone, or at the next meeting. I see that you are a new Wikipedian and the best advice that I could give to you is to talk to a human if you have questions rather than try to read the manuals. There is too much that it is possible to read and it is easier to ask questions. ::I agree with you, Bluerasberry Learning about Wikipedia editing and how to comment / follow (especially with some of these dated coding that is needed!) makes this more complicated than I think it should be. WT:Harassment

Hi, Bluerasberry. I undid you revert. Jytdog posted a link on March 15, right below GorillaWarfare's statement to the archived statement. Its still there. Generally speaking, it's much better to do that rather than alter someone else's comment. Mkdw talk 01:02, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

I will leave it but it seems strange to preserve a dead link. I recognize that it is in the old comment but it seems apparent to me that the person was trying to communicate a link, not code which is cannot have meaning outside the context of further research which only a few people can do. I appreciate your intent to protect the text, though. Blue Rasberry (talk) 01:37, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Veronica Lake

I left you a message at Talk:Veronica Lake. That whole Stewart Lake nonsense is a hoax. Veronica Lake's life is pretty well documented, and she published her autobiography in 1970. No one named Stewart Lake was a part of that. The whole thing is a fabrication. She was given the name Veronica Lake by a producer at the beginning of her career, and it's a pretty well-known fact. Please close out that hoax. — Maile (talk) 00:51, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

I replied on the talk page there. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:36, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

RSVP at and stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates.

What: Improving Wikipedia's coverage on queer and women artists of color
When: Saturday, May 6, 1-5pm
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, WA 98105
Who: People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.
What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

Drug expiration

Thanks for jumping in to the draft of drug expiration. It was a crazy article to address because it is a mix of technical medical content plus practical consumer information. I was struggling with the wording for the distinction between actual expiration date versus date on the label, so thanks for rewording that. I kept all of your changes. Thanks also for setting up the talk page.

The article is live now. I do not know how you found it while it was in draft form but I appreciate your attention. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:08, 9 May 2017 (UTC) |}

Thanks for your message! I was glad to help copyedit a bit. I found the draft when I looked at your contributions list. The WP:POPUPS gadget is old but still works fine. It lets you preview any user's recent contributions just by moving your mouse around — without any clicking required.
The article looks good; thanks again for writing it. Drug expiration is a big money-maker for drug makers. :) It's a sensible thing for you and/or the rest of Consumers Union to write about. Upon seeing the article, I was intrigued to learn about drug recycling. I may one day be starting on a certain rather-expensive drug, and may eventually look into acquiring it through recycling instead of just shopping around and using GoodRx.com for a coupon code.
My only quibble about the article: It strikes me as a bit odd that it has an empty "External links" section. I looked at MOS:ORDER s.v. "Bottom matter" and WP:LAYOUTEL s.v. "single item". It looks to me like (if you have no external links) it's best to omit the section, and to put all your category tags in the "References" instead.
Thanks also for all your work on Wikipedia. The more unbiased paid editors we have working on WikiProject Medicine, the better.
You need not write back to me unless you so desire. If you do write back, please do first move the whole conversation back to my talk page.

Sunday May 21, 10:30 am - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Wikipedia username to the #Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum.

We also welcome remote participation for the global Met Open Access Artworks Challenge (15 May - 30 June, 2017), you can sign up there at Met Open Access Artworks Challenge/Participants. --Pharos (talk) 16:24, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello Bluerasberry. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

 • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
 • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
 • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
 • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
 • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:33, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

your blueness open access project tagging

I seem to have encountered a plethora of open/open access in a range of new articles concerning the open/open access subject - and as a project tagger, I am quite concerned to get it right... so to speak - there is open project and there is open access - are they concomitant - that is they are equal bed fellows - and can be both tagged against an article relative to open access - or does one trump the other as a single entry sufficient? - or is there more to the issue of having two projects with such similar names, and requires further tweaking when tagging an article - any clues appreciated JarrahTree 10:58, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Inquiry

Good morning Lane,

I took your course for WNYLRC in March and have since become interested in Project Medicine. So much so, that I am traveling to Montreal this August to attend the Project Medicine day at WikiMania. I really want to promote this project to students and faculty as a means of demonstrating how we are all contributors to the information landscape (not just consumers). Unfortunately, my personal/professional priorities have largely trumped my small goal to make one edit a day (but I hope to get back on that now that summer is on its way and I have a little more time each day).

I was wondering whether you might be able to point me to some resources/people/links that could help me plan a Wikipedia editing event during Open Access Week this October. I am a health sciences librarian at McMaster University in Canada. I think it would be interesting to invite faculty and students alike to learn how they can edit health articles on wikipedia and get some practice. I'd like to prepare a proposal for this event so I need to have a framework in place before I get the green light to move forward planning. I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could provide me with as I have absolutely no experience with this kind of thing!

Thanks very much! --Mcbrarian (talk) 17:58, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I agree 100% with everything you said on that thread. My involvement in Wikipedia's education projects goes back to the catastrophic WP:IEP for which I led and coordinated the massive clean up. Before the IEP went pear shaped, I gave the WMF some warning well in advance, but as usual, they refused to accept there were flaws in their project and they ploughed on regardless until it caused the largest clean up in history and a total shake up of Wikipedia's education plans. I believe some people who caused the chaos were sort of fired, but given a grant to go off and create WikiEd where they could continue in salaried employment. I'm actually in the process of explaining to one professor as best I can, where he is getting things wrong. It's not really his fault, indeed, it clearly illustrates even more so and typifies how Wikipedia, the WMF, and WikiEd have failed in their mission. I would come back to education and do more to help, but not while people are still getting a salary to make a mess of things. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:26, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

BTW, that video is excellent. If you weren't reading from a teleprompt, it's even better still. You should consider higher office, but perhaps the politics and power struggles are not quite your cup of tea. I hope to see you again but I won't be able to make it to Montreal. Take care. Chris (Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:38, 20 May 2017 (UTC))

Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for the reply. It is enough public office for me right now to manage a few partnerships among Consumer Reports, Wikimedia NYC, and a few organizations around NYC. I still would like to get an interview with you by Skype or at least phone. I am unable to manage that technically at this time. Still, I wish I could arrange that sooner rather than later. I plan to be at Wikimania this year, so I'll give this some thought. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:06, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Facto Post – Issue 1 – 14 June 2017

Facto Post – Issue 1 – 14 June 2017

Editorial

This newsletter starts with the motto "common endeavour for 21st century content". To unpack that slogan somewhat, we are particularly interested in the new, post-Wikidata collection of techniques that are flourishing under the Wikimedia collaborative umbrella. To linked data, SPARQL queries and WikiCite, add gamified participation, text mining and new holding areas, with bots, tech and humans working harmoniously.

Scientists, librarians and Wikimedians are coming together and providing a more unified view of an emerging area. Further integration of both its community and its technical aspects can be anticipated.

While Wikipedia will remain the discursive heart of Wikimedia, data-rich and semantic content will support it. We'll aim to be both broad and selective in our coverage. This publication Facto Post (the very opposite of retroactive) and call to action are brought to you monthly by ContentMine.

People who work in variable shifts

New article suggestion for you. How about an article on medical and social impacts on people who work at night. Some jobs require shift rotations from 3rd shift to 2nd shift and so on on a weekly basis. A person's sleep pattern can be messed up. SWP13 (talk) 10:30, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

WP:INDICSCRIPT

Hi Bluerasberry, I just noticed you updated the wording of WP:INDICSCRIPT. May I ask for a clarification of the sentence "This guideline does not apply to articles that are within the scope of projects other than WikiProject India, for example WikiProject Hinduism or WikiProject Buddhism."?

I would think that such a wording would imply that any article which belongs to any other WikiProject other than WP India would automatically get an exception. This would not make sense for most articles, and would tend to defeat the spirit of what was agreed upon in the numerous discussions. For instance, the rule would not apply to an article like Hema Malini simply because the article also belongs to WP:WOMEN.

Thanks, MikeLynch (talk) 15:22, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

I moved your question to Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#WP:INDICSCRIPT because I thought it would be better to discuss this in that more public forum. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:05, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Paul Abels

Hi there, I'm wondering if I could ask a favour. I already posted on Another Believer's talk page, but I see that you're currently online and that you're involved with Wiki Loves Pride 2017, so I figure I should mention it to you too.

I'm hoping to nominate Paul Abels, an article I wrote this week during Wiki Loves Pride, for the DYK section on the front page but am unable to do so as an unregistered user. Would you be willing to nominate it on my behalf?

Thanks, 142.160.131.202 (talk) 23:51, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

And it seems that Another Believer has done it already. You can disregard this. Thanks anyway! 142.160.131.202 (talk) 00:16, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

WV & Consumer Reports

I understand you are at CR & interested in health issues. You might want to look a WV Pests#Permethrin-treated_fabrics, since it concerns health & mentions CR. Pashley (talk) 20:20, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Costumes (fire safety of)

Putting this note here owing to your CR connection, although it's not Wikimedia related as such right now, and I appreciate you are busy on other things (like the sun-screen issue, which I thank you for.)

Two to three years ago the BBC's Watchdog program in October featured an item about just how flammable certain Halloween costume and carnival novelty items for children were. I've not heard much about this subsequently, so would hope the UK situation has improved.

This made me wonder if given the size of the costume and carnival novelty market in the US, the fire safety of such items had been considered or reported on.

I appreciate the US regulatory climate may be different however. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:56, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Consumer Reports.

Do you still have links with them?

In a discussion over at English Wikivoyage voy:Talk:Sunburn_and_sun_protection I'd noted that the article on sun protection didn't list any brand names. A recent issue of W:Which? Travel had some recommended ones from a UK perspective, and I figured it might be reasonable to find out if there had been anything equivalent in the US.

Of course if a consumer rights group was willing to help improve certain travel topics on Wikivoyage under the appropriate licenses longer term, it would be appreciated greatly. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:16, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

For reference the published comparison table that started this approach was on page 58 of the July 2017 issue of Which? Travel, under the heading "SPF30 Suncreens on test", meaning it was specfic rating they appeared to be testing. Not sure if the publication is one you have access to at CR though. Sunday July 30: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

Great to meet you at WikiWednesday this week; I emailed you as a follow-up, though fear I may have typed the address incorrectly so wanted to check-in here. Thanks! FULBERT (talk) 18:15, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

@FULBERT: I did not get your email for some reason. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:32, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
I agree with you, @Bluerasberry: Learning about Wikipedia editing and how to comment / follow (especially with some of these dated coding that is needed!) makes this more complicated than I think it should be.
