Conserving tuna in olive oil was already common in Spain in XV century. (cfr. wikipedia in italian)
The technique of conserving fish and meat in anaerobic containers was invented in France in the end of 1700 by Nicolas Appert, then registered in England in 1810 by Pierre Durand who was the first who canned food in tin cans.
Canned tuna was first done in Sardinia, Italy around 1860 and popularised by the Florio family in Sicily beginning 1974 (they invented, for example, the cans that could be opened with a 'key'.
