== Plot == |
A teenaged Nandini and Aditha Karikalan fall in love. However, as Nandini is an orphaned commoner, Princess Kundavai and Sembiyan Mahadevi oppose their love and Nandini is banished from the kingdom. She and her foster family travel to the Pandya Empire, where Nandini is taken in by King Veerapandian and raised as his daughter. |
In the present day, Arunmozhi Varman, alias Ponniyin Selvan, is believed to be dead.As depicted in Ponniyin Selvan: I. Nandini conspires with the Pandya rebels, led by Ravidasan, to avenge Veerapandian’s murder at the hands of Karikalan. She manipulates Karikalan's friend and subordinate, Parthibendran, into conspiring against him. The rebels search for Arunmozhi, who has been rescued from the sea by a mute old woman who resembles Nandini, whom Arunmozhi refers to as Oomai Rani ("Mute Queen"). However, he has since fallen seriously ill. His allies manage to spirit Arunmozhi away to be healed by Buddhist monks, but Vanthiyathevan is caputured by the rebels. Meanwhile, Madhurantakan has proclaimed himself as the next king with the support of Shivan Adiyars and forms a secret alliance with the Rashtrakuta king. |
Nandini and the rebels plot to kill Aditha Karikalan and Sundara Chola on the same night, and are overheard by the captive Vanthiyathevan. Nandini announces that both Vanthiyathevan and Karikalan will die at her hands, and that she has invited Karikalan to Kadambur. Vanthiyathevan tells her about Oomai Rani, who closely resembles her. Realising that Vanthiyathevan has found her mother, Nandini spares his life. Azhwarkkadiyan Nambi disguises himself to infiltrate the rebels and saves Vanthiyathevan, who reveals what he has heard to Arunmozhi and Kundavai. |
At the viharam, Arunmozhi meets with his siblings, who are overjoyed at his survival, and tells them about Oomai Rani. Kundavai and Arunmozhi both plead with Karikalan not to meet with Nandini at Kadambur, but he disregards their advice and orders Vanthiyathevan to not follow him. Kundavai, remembering that her father had been shocked upon meeting Nandini, confronts him about Oomai Rani. He tells her about his mute lover Mandakini, whom he had met as a young man while being chased by the Pandyas. He had promised to return for her after his rescue, but when he searches for her, he hears that she has drowned. Kundavai believes that Nandini may be her half-sister, but Sembiyan Mahadevi tells her that Mandakini gave birth to, and abandoned, Nandini two years after Sundara Chola last saw her. |
Having learnt of Arunmozhi's survival, the Pandyas plot to assassinate him at the viharam, but are thwarted. Meanwhile, both Arunmozhi's allies and the Pandya assassins enter the Thanjai fort. Mandakini secretly follows the assasins and is seen by Poonguzhali. Shortly after, Periya Velar, Vaanathi's uncle, lays siege to Thanjai over Arunmozhi's apparent death, coming into conflict with Chinna Pazhuvettarayar, the commander of the fort. A frightened Madhurantakan secretly leaves Thanjai to take refuge with the Rashtrakuta. Upon reaching Thanjai, Arulmozhi forges peace between the two armies, with help from Vaanathi, and Poonguzhali warns Chinna Pazhuvettarayar about the assassins. |
In Kadambur, Karikalan agrees to cede the whole Kingdom and proclaim Madhurantakan as King, under the condition that he is allowed to keep his army to conquer his own lands to the north. While travelling to Thanjai to deliver this news, Periya Pazhuvettarayar hears about the conspiracy from the boatman Karuthiruman, who had assisted the Pandya rebels in Sri Lanka. Periya Pazhuvettrayar rushes back to Kadambur to save Karikalan. The Pandyas, having infiltrated both Kadambur and Thanjai, simultaneously attack Sundara Chola and his sons. In Thanjai, Mandakini is killed while saving Sundara Chola, and Arunmozhi fights and kills the assassins. In Kadambur, Karikalan tells Nandini that he has come to die at her hands in the hope that his death will cool her desire for revenge. However, Nandini cannot bring herself to kill him and the rebels rush forward. Vanthiyathevan, who has secretly folowed Karikalan, is knocked out and Periya Pazhuvettarayar is captured. Karikalan is killed in Nandini's arms during the struggle and the rebels depart with both Nandini and Periya Pazhuvettarayar. Vanthiyathevan, as the only person remaining at the scene of the murder, is imprisoned. |
Karuthiruman and Ravidasan reveal to Nandini that she is Veerapandian's daughter by Mandakini, and that the Pandya rebels had followed her because of her status as princess of the Pandyas. They tell her that, after Sundara Chola had escaped the Pandyas, Veerapandiyan, following his trail, had come across Mandakini and captured and assaulted her in his rage. Out of disbelief and guilt, Nandini commits suicide in the Ponni river, leaving behind a note for Periya Pazhuvettarayar, whom she believes to have been the only person to show her true kindness. Periya Pazhuvettarayar returns to Thanjai in time to provide the truth of Karikalan's death at Vanthiyathevan's trial. |
However, Parthibendran, believing that Arunmozhi ordered the killing, had already joined forces with the kings of Rashtrakuta and Lanka to invade the Chola empire. Madhurantakan refuses to battle against his countrymen and sides with Arunmozhi, assisting in the defeat of his former allies. Following this event, Sundara Chola decides to abdicate in favour of his remaining son. However, on the day of the coronation, Arunmozhi cedes the throne to Madhurantakan, who takes the name, Uttama Chola. The epilogue reveals that Vanthiyathevan and Arunmozhi made extensive conquests in Lanka under Uttama Chola's rule, and when Uttama Chola died, Arunmozhi inherited the throne as Rajaraja Chola I, ushering in a golden age of Chola rule. |
