It was founded in 1977 and is run and operated by the YMCA.<ref name="ymca">[http://www.ymcasf.org/Embarcadero/teens.html Embarcadero YMCA Teen Programs], Youth Chance High School access date August 28, 2008</ref> The school accepts students ages 16 to 21 years old with a focus on students that have been expelled from other schools and that have subsequently been referred by probation officers, principals, a guardian or another interested party.<ref name="ymca"/>

The school helps disadvantaged students of all races achieve success, by teaching them the necessary academic skills to pass the [[GED]] and/or [[CHSPE]](California High School Equivalency Exam). The majority of the student body (97%) are young people of color and 90% of them are poor.<ref name="ychs"/> Most students pass the GED, with some finding success on the CHSPE. Many go directly into the workforce, enroll in a training program for various trades, or possibly attend [[San Francisco City College]]. The principal is Maureen Miller, a career educator who also serves as the school's resident [[Math]] teacher. Youth Chance is a project of the Embarcadero [[YMCA]] and is located at that branch in San Francisco's [[Financial District]].
The school works with a diverse student population, preparing them with the necessary academic skills to pass the [[GED]] and/or [[CHSPE]] (California High School Equivalency Exam). 97% of the student body are students of color, and all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.<ref name="ychs"/>

Youth Chance High School was founded in 1977 and is run and operated by the YMCA.[2] The school accepts students ages 15 to 19 years old with a focus on students who have dropped out of other schools and whom have subsequently been referred by social service agencies, family members or the students themselves.[2] The school works with a diverse student population, preparing them with the necessary academic skills to pass the GED and/or CHSPE (California High School Equivalency Exam). 97% of the student body are students of color, and all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.[1]
