Possible bug with AWB Regex problem

Hello; the regex the AutoWikiBrowser uses seems to be a little glitchy with the pipe character. When not escaped in the replace field, it behaves oddly; when escape, it outputs \|. See the examples below.

Search: \[\[([\w: !/%.]*)\]\]

Replace: [[w:$1|$1]]

Result: [[Wikipedia]] → [[w:w:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]]

Search: \[\[([\w: !/%.]*)\]\]

Replace: [[w:$1\|$1]]

Result: [[Wikipedia]] → [[w:Wikipedia\|Wikipedia]]

AWB functionality!

Hi Bluemoose, I was using AWB a couple days ago and was alarmed to see that it wasn't alphabetizing interwikis or categories! This was a very useful feature of AWB, and I wonder if you know why it no longer does this? Thanks! Babajobu 06:42, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Alphabetizing interwiki's is a good idea, but I'm not so sure about categories. For example on a football/baseball/basketball/etc players page it's probably better to have their year of birth coupled with the Living people/year of death category, and keep together all of the categories for each of the teams the player has played for. For example look at Doug Flutie, the teams he has played for are intermixed with the places he is from categories, and it makes for a random chaotic presentation. Qutezuce 06:50, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Some botty/databasey thoughts

Hi Martin - I haven't talked to you in a while (i've been very busy), I hope everything is going well. I have recently thought of a couple of projects that exceed my technical abilities that I thought you might be interested in implementing. Obviously, if these are hard or take away from other things, feel free to ignore them. They may even be terrible ideas.

1. There are a lot of category templates and wikiproject templates (e.g. {{Game theory}} and {{GameTheoryProject}}) which correspond to categories (e.g. Category:Game theory). It would be nice to have a bot that ensured that if an article had one of these then it has all three. Since Cat:Gt is pretty small, it is easily done by hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other categories that would benefit from this.
2. It would also be nice to have a list of unreferenced articles that don't have the {{unreferenced}} template. This could be acheived by checking for either a "References" section or an external link in the article. Perhaps a bot could add this template in those cases (although this might ruffle some feathers).
3. Along the same lines it might be good to have a bot that removed the aforementioned template from articles that did have external links. (I've seen a few mistagged articles.)
4. Lastly, it might be good to have a scan that checked people categories looking for articles that didn't have sort tags (e.g. [[Category:Game theorists]] instead of [[Category:Game theorists|Zollman, Kevin]]). These are likely to be mis-sorted in the category since most people should be sorted by something other than the first letter in the article title.

Martin - Thanks a lot for the speedy service :) I agree that the possibility for false positives for references is high, having a bot do the addition would be a bad idea. I don't have a sense for how many articles would have references but no external links or references section. Certainly some will. AWB for Wikimedia Commons

AWB get from contribs problem

Bluemoose - Please see this message on my talk page. I think there is a glitch in the get from contribs option but I can't seem to find it. Do you know the problem? When I enter that username (09i70o7nj0h) it doesn't work, even though all others (including others beginning with a number) do work. Normally, the green progress bar scrolls until a list appear. With username 09i70o7nj0h, the progress bar disappears after about three seconds for me and the list never appears, not even in about five minutes. AWB acting weird

Hey Bluemoose. Every time I try to log in in AutoWikiBrowser, it just acts as a CPU hog. It happened on all three of my OSes (XP with IE7 Beta 2 preview, Windows Vista 5308, and Longhorn Server). The problem exists in 3 separate OS configurations which I assume are working properly. But there is a common (for you) web-browsing factor that's different than most other editors, your custom javascript.

I would suggest that you try blanking your custom monobook.js, clear your browser cache, and see if the problem goes away.

Lar suggested I use your program to find redlinks in Beatles articles for the Beatles wikiproject. It throws me up an error message though:

I too have been having problems with the dump searcher. It crashes at the end of a search with a "WindowsApplication1 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." type box. Fortunatly, provided you don't press either the "Send Error Report" or the "Don't Send" buttons it is still possible to save the search results thus far collected. This happens with two recent database downloads, but does not happen with an earlier download that is less than 1Gbyte. Martin, yes the updates look good, I can change the priority and (best of all) there is a STOP button. I ran the new version at got a different error box that read "Problem on Total positivity Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed: page, mediawiki. Line 71880811, position 4. OK"

That sounds like a problem with the data dump as it is reporting a problem with the file, I think the software that does the dumps is only in development at the moment. In fact, I can reproduce the error by un-closing an element in the xml file. Martin 23:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I did that. I mentioned it to you because it appears to be a case where automation lends credence to what may be a hoax. Perhaps Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser could run a search engine query on an article's pagename as a primitive check on whether assisted edits such as categorization are warranted. Iranian C-130's

I see you reverted this inclusion of Iran as operators of the C-130, apparently you thought it was vandalism. During the the last Shah of Iran's reign, they bought several of the aircraft. According to the BBC story] about the Iranian Air Force C-130 crash in Tehran:

The Iranian air force is believed to have about 15 ageing US-made C-130s in operation, dating back to before the 1979 Islamic revolution and the US boycott of Iran.

Blubot question

Hello Bluemoose -- I noticed Bluebot processed Japanese particles today, "fixing" a number of links via AWB, as shown by the diff here. Not to worry, the links aren't broken, but they weren't broken before either. An example:

• [[Japanese_particles#bakari|bakari]] was changed to
• [[Japanese particles#bakari|bakari]]

Note that both Japanese_particles#bakari and Japanese particles#bakari link successfully to the same page, with neither link being redirected. My suggestion is that you tweak Bluebot's code to ignore the underscore in links, as the extra edits simply add to server load and do nothing (that I can tell) to improve functionality. Mammoth Cave National Park

You recently removed the good article tag from the Mammoth Cave National Park article. I did not put the tag there, or ask that the article be considered good, but I did do a lot of the contributions that probably propelled it to good article status. Is the removal of the good article tag a sign of the article's status being revoked, or just a cosmetic thing (having read the discussion mentioned above in this Talk page.) If the status has been revoked, shouldn't we also remove the corresponding template in the article's accompanying discussion page? Also, if you have a specific criticism for the article that motivated revoking the status, could you let me know where you think the weaknesses are? I wrote quite a bit off the top of my head, but I am going through my original sources right now and adding citations using the "ref" tag, and adopting a style for them that references an emerging annotated bibliography section that I'm creating at the same time. • P.S. How do I handle entries that were tagged a while back? The CURRENTMONTH name field seems inappropriate. For instance, I tagged an entry as {{Wikify-date|January 2006}} but no difference was observed on the "...need to be wikified..." page.

• How many of the 6000 entries that were in the initial category were tagged during March 2006? I want to start wikifying beginning with the oldest entries. As such, it would be helpful for me to know which entries have been waiting the longest.

Action item.

Article that need wikification by month

From your reply, I take it that Bluebot, or perhaps any bot, cannot tell when an article was tagged for wikification and because of this, all the articles would be put into the current month. I guess that the bot that sorts the articles needing cleanup, Pearle I think, might do so by running every day instead of by determining when the tag was placed. I am not sure that people will actually use the new tagging system because people are resistant to change and it is more work than the old system. Although, a couple of enthusiastic people appear to be sorting them manually and by AWB. Perhaps we should wait and see whether they can do the job. After they're finished, we could run a bot every day like they do for cleanup articles. If they can't do it, we could move all the articles to a "March 2006 and before" category and then start running a bot every day. What do you think? -- Kjkolb 11:45, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Pearle + Articles that need to be wikified

Hi Beland, I have proposed on Category talk:Articles that need to be wikified that we split that category into by-month sub-categories, just like Category:Cleanup by month. I wonder if your bot would be willing to do the grunt work similar to what it does for Cleanup by month? Bad links + technical difficulties

Firstly, thanks a lot for sorting out the wikification category. Secondly, I am not sure how you detect the bad links, I assume just by pattern matching the article text, if this is the case then a tool I made could probably do the job of generating the bad links reports. AWB question

AWB new user question

I've got .NET 2.0 installed and loaded AWB 2.1.9. I can create a list, set options, and press Start. The first article in the list loads in the top panel, but then nothing happens other than the bot timer resetting every 70 seconds. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Rillian 17:11, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

I make a list, set options and press Start. The status bar reads "Loading article" and the Edit Page for the first article appears in the top panel. Nothing appears in the bottom right text box. It then waits until restart - which is now at 128 seconds. Rillian 19:17, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

interesting discovery

hi there martin. today i was going through spelling mistakes for 'their', thinking that today's speed was kinda slow parsing the list, and an idea came to me. i copied AWB, and ran both copies, checking for both 'their' and now also 'throughout'. i pretty must doubled my edit speed using alt-tab between the two. this could either be a 'feature' or a 'bug' depending on how you look at it, which i now leave to you. AWB Problems

Hi Martin, got added to the approved user page today, and tried to use AWB, but to no avail. Whenever I try to use it I get a pop-up error message, well actually it's a pop-up problem message saying: you are not enabled to use this. What could be the problem? I've tried it with IE open, with Firefox open, with both open! I've got the right .NET downloaded and so that's not the problem. I can't generate any lists or anything at all. large lists with AWB

hi again. i am trying to construct a big XML setting to catch a list of misspellings, and I think that the list will stop populating itself after around 850-900. It simply returns a barron list, with maybe one or two items. removing items from the regex (reducing the number of misspellings checked) eventually gives a list of around that size, and slowly adding to the regex after that results the in previously mentioned problem. any ideas as to why? i really want to make this big ol' comb that gets many misspellings at once, since it is less stressful on the database. I've tried splitting them up with some success. However, for instance, the list produced for the misspellings for A-F is different from the A-C, in that the A-F list will catch different articles than the A-C list when looking for something like 'begining'. JoeSmack ^Talk 04:21, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Get a chance to look at the bug? Really i'd use (and have used) the database dump, but google via AWB is just smarter at sorting out the false positives (ex: getting 'healthier' when looking for the misspelling 'thier' with the dump).JoeSmack ^Talk 19:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

I havent been able to reproduce the problem yet. When searching the database, search for " thier" with a preceding space, this eliminates the false positives, and is much more accurate than the google search. Martin 20:10, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

What exactly has AWB done

Hi, I'd be grateful if you could take a quick look at the edit I made to Speed of light yesterday with AWB. I'm not quite sure what AWB actually did. I have the popups enable in my monobook and it shows the changes made to the page in that edit, and I can't actually see what AWB has done. It says that it has changed full-stops, into simply another full-stop! Am I missing something? --Wisden17 16:54, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

All it did was remove white space, you probably shouldnt save a change that only does something so minor, and you should also not save a change when your not sure what it has done. The changes AWB makes automatically are generally meant to be incidental to whatever the main purpose of the edit was, such as fixing a typo, or something. Martin 16:59, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

This person Kurt Leyman (talk · contribs) who is the same as this IP 213.243.185.219 (talk · contribs) has editted a number of pages, changing numbers, deleting text, adding other text/numbers, without providing any references for your information. Most recently the battle of kursk where he deleted 300 thousand casulties, winter war where he has removed 2 key paragraphs about a research paper and what a president said in the 60s, the battle of berlin and many others. I see that you have posted on his IP adress once and I am wondering what is the correct way to approach this matter. (Deng 16:32, 7 April 2006 (UTC))

They have been asked for many times. He dosent respond and dosent give any. And there is not one specific item but so many. AWB broken?

The latest version of AWB no longer seems to enforce the "using AWB" tag in the edit summary? Is this intentional? If so, I'd strongly recommend against it. We just ran across a user making a slew of questionable edits and it took us awhile to figure out what was going on because "using AWB" wasn't anywhere in the edit summaries. We thought maybe he was using pywikipedia, or something. I downloaded the latest version of AWB and confirmed this new functionality. Please deal with this as soon as possible! I removed it because people complained about it, he has been removed from the list, he can't use it any more. Also, if he had been using pywiki, what difference would it have made? that has no restrictions on it at all, and does not force any kind of summary, even though it is fully automatic. The difference is that AWB users seem to consider the term "bot" to be a personal attack, even when they are editing at a bot-like speed and with a bot-like lack of responsiveness. The user was told to stop those kinds of edits, but continued doing them for 28 minutes. Any "bot" would have been blocked sooner, but people say "but I'm not a bot, I'm not editing from the command line, I'm using AWB" and somehow that makes it rouge admin abuse when they get blocked for it, I guess because it tears a hole in their aspirations of later adminship, I don't know. — Apr. 7, '06 [18:25] <freakofnur_xture|talk>

Bluebot request

Can bluebot categorize all those date articles? See here for all the articles January_2003#Events_by_month. And then each month has all the articles in one page. Hello. You recently deleted Talk:Queueing_Theory, as it was a "Orphaned talk page". The reason it was an orphaned talk page was simply that it had been accidentally moved to the wrong Talk page while it was still in progress. I was going to finish it up and move it to Buzen's algorithm in a week or two when I had a break in my exams and time to finish it. I'd really appreciate it if you could undelete it, or send me a copy of it, as it had a lot of LaTeX math that would be hard to reproduce. I did some testing last night on wiktionary after writing some ugly code to take into account the fact that Wiktionary doesn't follow Wikipedia Naming Conventions (they use lower case first letter article names much of the time) and some other quirks like non-mainspace being quite different, it doesn't look like it will be all that difficult to adapt to given some time to do a lot of testing.

I'll keep testing different things and talking to Wiktionarians (#wiktionary) online/on-site to identify as many issues as possible and look at ways to deal with them.
