Dave Gurney, a retired homicide detective living in Walnut crossing, gets visited by a college friend, Mark Mellery, who wants help with a problem he has. Mellery has received a letter in which he is asked to think of a number, he does so and thinks of the cipher 658, when he opens an envelope that came with the letter, he discovers that the sender of the letter (who signs as X. Arybdis) has guessed the number. A few weeks later (in November), Mark Mellery appears dead with his throat slashed by a bottle of whiskey in his house. The police is flabbergasted with the clues left as the scene: footprints in the snow leading to nowhere, cigarette butts with no DNA in them and a beach chair which didn't belong to the victim. A few days later after Mark's murder, another man in the Bronx appears murdered with his throat slashed with a bottle of whiskey. With two murders to resolve, Guney now has to play all his cards to trap an intelligent psychopath who can, as incredible as it may seem, read people's minds. |
