Meelick Eyrecourt is the one of oldest hurling clubs in Ireland. Founded in 1884 the club was mainly formed around a Hurling tradition with evidence that Hurling had been played in the parish for centuries before. Complimentary to this is the fact that the club competed in the first All Ireland Final of 1884 playing Thurles of Tipperary. The club lost this final but there was evidence of unorthodox tactics by the Tipp club as the Duped Meelick into thinking they were not attending where Meelick's panel retired to a bar in Birr, where the final was being held, for a couple of hours until Thurles turned up and duly defeated Meelick 1-1 0 0-0. |
