Dr. Soetomo or Soebroto (30 July 1888 – 30 May 1938) was a founding figure of Budi Utomo, the first movement organization in Indonesia. Soebroto changed his name to Soetomo when he entered high school.[1]

In 1903, Soetomo studied medicine at the Tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen School, Batavia. Together with friends from STOVIA, Soetomo founded an association called Budi Utomo, in 1908. After graduating in 1911, he worked as a government doctor in various areas in Java and Sumatra. In 1917, Soetomo married a Dutch nurse.

From 1919 to 1923, Soetomo received a scholarship and continued his medical specialist studies at the University of Amsterdam. During college, Soetomo took part in Indische Vereeniging activities. Soetomo was also elected as chairman of the Indische Vereeniging period 1921–1922.

In 1923, Soetomo returned to Indonesia and became a teacher at the Nederlandsch Artsen School (NIAS).

In 1924, Soetomo founded the Indonesian Study Club (in Dutch Indonesische Studie Club or Indonesian Study Group) in Surabaya.

In 1930, the Indonesische Studie Club changed its name to the Indonesian Nation Party and in 1935, founded Parindra (Greater Indonesia Party).{{Short description|Indonesian physician and nationalist (1888–1938)}}
