Hi, I'm trying to put together a small article for ISoP, a professional organization in my field. This is my first article, so I was hoping to get some friendly feedback before sending it off into the review process. If you wouldn't mind taking a look, I'd love to get your take.

US Politics Page Looking for Review
Hey @FormalDude! Myself and some others are trying to expand info about the major candidates in our Congressional district (MD-06), (I know some other prominent authors like @Y2hyaXM have taken up the effort to expand pages on Maryland politics as well so tagging for interest). Particularly, a new one had to be created for Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Tekesha_Martinez, I'm personally unfamiliar with the new page review process so I wasn't sure if you had any suggestions to help it along. == Paul Prestopino draft article ==
Hi there FormalDude. You recently moved the article on Paul Prestopino to draft space due to its not yet being well enough documented, and I've added some things to it. It's not ready for prime time yet, but it's still fairly short. Would you be able to guide me on what it's main weakness is before I try to get it reviewed? I've left a message on the draft article's Talk page also. You are welcome just to correct or remove words in the article as needed, or remove parts that don't work, or add the template for "reference needed" (I know there is such a template but can't remember what it is). Any help you can supply will be much appreciated. I understand the need to careful vetting of new articles, as it's such a bad world with many people attempting to do self-promotion and exaggerating and the like. In particular, much of the "proof" for claims about Prestopino can best be garnered by a Google search, a YouTube search, or a Google image search, as well as the fact that his name already appears in 69 (I counted) Wikipedia articles, mostly as a redlink. Best regards, and I understand if you don't have the time to help out. Harborsparrow (talk) 17:30, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

You are doing the exact opposite of what you said you would do at ANI. I consider this a sanctionable action, due to the fact I believe that in that ANI, you knew you were in danger of recieving formal sanctions. A boomerang, so-to-speak. And if not sanctions, your actions were going to be thoroughly criticized for about a week. Your closure of the RfC at PragerU seems a bit confusing. Please properly discuss in talk page of article instead of edit warring

I am concerned that you refuse to properly discuss the contentious material about Tudor Dixon that you reincorporated. I had questioned and challenged said info for being inaccurate and I tried to reword it in a more neutral way. In addition, you also seemingly ignored the arbitration ruling that I included in the edit summary of my edit removing said challenged contentious information.

Said ruling states,

In cases where the appropriateness of material regarding a living person is questioned, the rule of thumb should be "do no harm." This means, among other things, that such material should be removed until a decision to include it is reached, rather than being included until a decision to remove it is reached.

According to WP:CONSENSUS,

Decisions on Wikipedia are primarily made by consensus. [...] Decision making and reaching consensus involve an effort to incorporate all editors' legitimate concerns, while respecting Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

According to WP:EDITWAR,

An edit war occurs when editors who disagree about the content of a page repeatedly override each other's contributions. Editors engaged in a dispute should reach consensus or pursue dispute resolution rather than edit war.

You mentioned an unspecified editor in the edit summary of your revert. In the talk page of the article, in the relevant thread (titled "Restoration of contentious info in place of neutral language ") the only other editor is the ip user, who actually stated, "Why not quote what she actually said/believes, that: 'Liberal policymakers are pushing COVID-19 vaccines on our children and forcing parents out of the process'".

Finally, I see the sheer quantity of the edits you have and your permissions. Surely one would expect that an editor with said characteristics would seek more proper discussion instead of seemingly ignoring Wikipedia guidance and unilaterally reverting others edits while refusing to properly discuss. Thinker78 (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry but I don't intend to get drawn into a prolonged discussion with you about a single well-sourced sentence. ––FormalDude (talk) 02:57, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
It is clear we have a dispute and that I had questioned the contentious information, meeting the threshold of the arbitration ruling. If you didn't want to discuss then you should not have reincorporated contentious information in a biography of a living person. Now I will seek dispute resolution. Thinker78 (talk) 03:05, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
I did discuss. ––FormalDude (talk) 03:08, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

@Throast: Most TV shows seem to use the non-free title card for the infobox image. ––FormalDude (talk) 18:48, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
First off, not a great argument, and not the case in quite a few featured- or GA-level TV series articles, see The Simpsons, House (TV series), Family Guy, Cold Feet, The Emperor's New School for examples. In this case, the title card only features the logo against a black background and is essentially the same as the SVG logo, only low-resolution and non-scalable. Whataboutism aside, I don't see any great arguments for including the title card over the SVG logo. Throast ping me! (talk | contribs) 19:23, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Start a talk page thread and we can see what others think. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:31, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
So far, you're the only one objecting, so it'd be great to hear at least some substantive arguments. You gotta love an editor who reverts without explicit cause and, when confronted, passes on the issue to the article talk page... Throast ping me! (talk | contribs) 19:46, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
@Throast: Per MOS:TVIMAGE: "For a show's main article, an intertitle shot of the show (i.e., a screenshot capture of the show's title) or a promotional poster used to represent the show itself should be used." Gotta love an editor who nags and nags about a single revert restoring the policy-backed WP:STATUSQUO. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:20, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
An editor with a toolset like yours should be aware that MoS is a guideline, not policy, that's been deviated from in several articles which have somehow still managed to reach FA-status. This discussion is still missing a counterargument with actual merit. Throast ping me! (talk | contribs) 22:33, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Apparently WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is a great argument when it happens to support your preferred version. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Are you kidding? I've laid out my actual reasons for the change in my very first response to you. I'm not arguing to include the image based on the fact that other articles use similar images; I'm simply rebutting your assertion. Throast ping me! (talk | contribs) 22:43, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
All I asserted was a quote from the manual of style. Pointing out that some pages don't follow the quoted text is not a rebuttal–the manual of style still says what I quoted. It's not any less legitimate just because pages exist that don't follow it. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:49, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi FormalDude, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! TheSandDoctor Talk 19:55, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Question from Qfaceae (19:03, 24 January 2023)

Hi there FormalDude,

Thanks for taking time out of your day and offering to help out. I usually end up editing Wikipedia pages that I stumble upon in my day to day life, with info that's out of date. For example, yesterday I was looking at the List of plants that are extinct in the wild page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_plants_that_are_extinct_in_the_wild) and noticed that it hadn't been updated since 2016. After some wrangling I got the datasheet from IUCN, the original source, and found an additional 7 species classified as extinct in the wild.

My question is this... I can easily add seven species manually on this one page, and keep the formatting all the same, etc. But the template on the side has its own page and, of course, links to other similar pages with many more species- Endangered Species numbered 3,654 in 2016, and now over 10,000 endangered species have been identified. I want to update the template, but I realize this would change the template's data for the Endangered, extinct, etc pages. And I don't think it's sensible to manually enter tens of thousands of species that have been added since the page was edited in 2016.

All this to say that I went into this page trying to make a few small updates, and ended up realizing that a web of pages is significantly outdated, and I don't feel like it's a task meant for the hands of one human- are there scraping tools I'm missing, or anything similar, for getting this data onto Wikipedia en masse? Advice greatly welcomed.

Cheers,

Qfaceae --Qfaceae (talk) 19:03, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Qfaceae, good question! This isn't an area that I'm very experienced with, but I did some looking and it seems that there are tools like Beastie Bot that can be used to automate the creation of species lists. I'm not sure how to use it, but you could ask the bot's owner or at WikiProject Extinction or WikiProject Plants. I hope this gets you headed in the right direction! ––FormalDude (talk) 23:51, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Qfaceae. Please feel free to update the page! Sorry, I have not been maintaining Beastie Bot and it would likely take significant work to get it going again. If the template with the pie-chart is a problem, you might find it easier to make a duplicate of it before editing it, or just remove it from the page entirely, as it's outdated anyway. Please don't treat it as set in stone. Cheers —Pengo 10:46, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Pengo. I will probably update the template and update the smaller pages it links to where only a handful of species have been added, and I'll leave the outdated lists with thousands of species for someone else and/or another day. Cheers! Qfaceae (talk) 20:04, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Greetings, the discussion is still ongoing, since the outcome was `no consensus`, and according to WP:NOCONSENSUS and WP:STATUSQUO for BLPs, the guidelines suggest In discussions related to living people, a lack of consensus often results in the removal of the contentious matter, regardless of whether the proposal was to add, modify, or remove it., and If you are having a dispute about whether to include it, the material is automatically contentious. should that guide the outcome of this decision so that the controversial matter may be put to rest? It's worth noting that the editors on the other side have made multiple edits to other politicians labeling them `far-right`, which seems highly suspicious to me, and could be considered biased editing. Looking forward to your feedback. Kcmastrpc (talk) 01:21, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

eye I have read the above message. I will reply when I have a moment. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:29, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
@Kcmastrpc: It says often, but not always. Since the disputed material is not at all poorly sourced and discussion mainly focused on how the material should be included rather than if it should be included, I do not believe there is sufficient justification to remove it. ––FormalDude (talk) 04:21, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
FD, I don't think that is a good closing claim. NOCON is rather clear about this as this is a label in wiki-voice. Those who felt it could be in the lead were generally in favor of an attributed claim. Also, this is a relatively new addition that isn't stable and is being challenged for the first time (ONUS). As such, removal absent consensus is would be the correct path if the compromise, attributed version doesn't have consensus. Springee (talk) 16:56, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
FD, I'm reading the close now and I'm in agreement with Springee. WP:ONUS applies when consensus was never attained to include information in an article, especially when there are WP:BLP considerations. The content was never stable in the article, so there's no plausible claim that WP:SILENT applies, and I don't see any discussions that attained consensus for inclusion by looking at the article's talk page. Please consider self-reverting or changing your closing summary on WP:BLPN. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:34, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello

Hope your well 🤗

I hope this makes sense 🤞.

I'm just wanting to find out where I went wrong today when trying to add information on Wiki. This is my first time trying to add info regarding a tv show I starred in. I have worked with Mr Harry Michaels. I added successfully on his Wiki page a tv show he produced many moons ago. I updated the info successfully today. When I tried to add further info regarding the show "Materialscientist" reverted my info regarding the SBS show called Seeing Is Believing". Have I done something wrong? I wanted to add further information including the cast I worked with.

Thank you & hope to hear from you soon. 🤗🌻 --Helen Anton (talk) 06:31, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello FormalDude

The Darrin Gray Article was declined but at the bottom it shows this "This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments, a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. (February 2023)."

I created this article for free.

Please advise and thank you for your help. Renee 02/08/23 Renee530 (talk) 10:56, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Renee530: Right now it does not pass WP:BASIC. As I said in my review, the article needs more sources with significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. ––FormalDude (talk) 02:12, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Question from KristelNL (08:29, 27 February 2023)

Hi FormalDude, I became a brand new Wikipedia editor yesterday and I've got a question about references. I've tasked myself with documenting the regulatory process of Formula One. A sport which I enjoy to watch but also one in a far from transparent universe governed by quite some non-disclosed documents involving commercial parties. This comes with some challenges regarding references.

Several claims I would like to make can only be substantiated by on-line references on sites which require a (free or paid) subscription, or by hearsay information published by editors on specialized platforms (which they cannot formally substantiate as they get their information from their own trusted sources). Is there a Wikipedia policy which outlines what to do in such situations? --KristelNL (talk) 08:29, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) See WP:PAYWALL. You are allowed to use sources that require a subscription as long as they meet the other rules we set for sources (reliable, independent, etc). Anything that you would describe as "hearsay" is by definition very unlikely to be appropriate for Wikipedia. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 18:27, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello, FormalDude. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Capitalism and genocide".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the db-afc, db-draft, or db-g13 code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 04:57, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

ANI

Hi, most ANI threads don't actually need closure. If you are going to close any, please make sure you don't don't close them prematurely. For example, a block of an established editor will often be contested by the blocked editor so it's appropriate to leave the thread open for a block review. But considering ANI is already the second-most edited page on the entire wiki, it's better not to make meta edits unless they're really necessary. Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:40, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Fair enough, thanks! ––FormalDude (talk) 11:32, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Contentious topic notice

Why have you taken it upon yourself to indiscriminately post this contentious topic notice on my talk page, and on the talk pages of several other editors who've recently edited 2023 Covenant School shooting? Do you honestly think you're accomplishing anything by doing that? How about you only post it if you encounter an editor whose edits to a contentious article have been problematic? Rowing007 (talk) 18:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

@Rowing007: Anyone editing the page should be informed of the contentious topic(s) that apply, so I've taken to notifying users who are editing the page multiple times and have not been notified. The notice specifically states that it does not imply there is anything problematic with your edits. As for what it accomplishes, see WP:Contentious topics § Awareness of contentious topics. ––FormalDude (talk) 18:47, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I know what the message explicitly states. Nevertheless, the page is already EC-only. That alone should signal that anyone editing it is experienced enough to understand a) that it is contentious, and b) how to deal with contentious topics. Therefore, your self-appointed task of posting the notices is pretty unwarranted and only serves as an irritant. Rowing007 (talk) 19:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: Unfortunately EC protection does not mean everyone editing the page is experienced or that they are aware about contentious topics. Sorry you feel this standard notification that is required for someone to be formally WP:AWARE of contentious topics is an irritant, but it is fully warranted. If you do not wish to receive CT notifications, I recommend using the template in order to note which contentious topics you know. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:15, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
It's truly not warranted, and your little crusade has not accomplished anything, as it is purely a redunancy, considering the massive warnings already in place on the article when one tries to edit it. Reserve the notice for those who've demonstrated they would benefit from it. Thanks. Rowing007 (talk) 19:20, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: "When an editor first begins making edits within any contentious topic, anyone may alert the editor of the contentious topic designation using the template." It's not a crusade and I am but one of many editors who place contentious topic notices. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:22, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
You like that procedure, eh? Just because you can ("may") doesn't mean you should. Refer to above comments. It's lazy editing and self-entitlement to indiscriminately post it. Rowing007 (talk) 19:31, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you're giving me grief when you yourself have placed notices. Two other editors have also given you notices and I don't see you ranting on their talk pages. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:26, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not "giving you grief". I'm expressing my disdain with your behaviour. Also, nice attempt at trying to dig up dirt, but you're falling short, because you haven't even properly ascertained the context of that particular case, nor have you summarized it appropriately here, as I did respond to the editors in kind. It would be sound practice for you to not post the notice without investigating the edits first. Rowing007 (talk) 19:31, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
You've never edited Bon courage's talk page and you "responded" to Woodroar by giving them a CT notice. Am I missing something? ––FormalDude (talk) 19:35, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, you are! However, this isn't the place for explaining that, and it's entirely irrelevant to this discussion, not to mention the fact you were not at all involved, so I'm not sure why you think it's a good idea to bring it up. Moral of the story: it would be sound practice for you to not post the notice without investigating the edits first. Rowing007 (talk) 21:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: The only investigation required is confirming that you've edited a contentious topic area and are formally unaware. If you want to be left alone, stop editing my talk page. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:19, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
The time to have left me alone was went you took it upon yourself to harass me with the contentious topic warning. It's fallacious to claim that the only investigation required is confirming that someone has edited a contentious topic area and is formally unaware; examining their edits for disruption prevents this exact kind of frustration. Rowing007 (talk) 21:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: Nobody has ever been this frustrated with me in the hundreds of contentious topics notices I've placed. What would prevent this is you choosing not to be upset by standard, ubiquitous wiki notices. Obviously I can't control your emotions. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:34, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Ascribing emotions where there are none is sophistry; I referred to frustration in the sense of "the act of frustrating", where frustrate means "to hinder or thwart", because you have hindered my experience by choosing to post the notice to my talk page. The way in which others have or have not reacted to your actions is none of my concern; please stop constructing straw man arguments. Rowing007 (talk) 21:45, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Oh yes, it's very clear you are keeping emotions out of this.[sarcasm] ––FormalDude (talk) 21:48, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Pure sophistry; completely unproductive. Rowing007 (talk) 21:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Questions from Ver1tey (00:50, 8 April 2023)

Hello FormalDude. I edited an article today and it now seems to be deleted. Can you please help? Thanks --Ver1tey (talk) 00:51, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello FormalDude. I should have given more specifics in my previous question. The article that I was editing was “Nick Savides”. The last edit that I made, adding an image from Commons, was the morning of April 7, then I saw the article was missing by later that day (today). I looked on the deletion log and did not find it there. I would appreciate it if the article could be restored to before the previous edit. --Ver1tey (talk) 01:57, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

@Ver1tey Forgive me butting in, but have you looked at Draft:Nick Savides? —C.Fred (talk) 01:58, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for noting that. I do see the draft. It has the all edits that I made in the last few days, but I made those on the live article. I’m confused that the live article is not viewable. I apologize that I am new to editing. Ver1tey (talk) 02:14, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I have noticed that there is an error in a page in which I appear. They show me as another person who is not me. How do I correct this oversight? --Beardy M (talk) 19:43, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Beardy M. What do you mean "They show me as another person who is not me"? Does an article use an incorrect picture? Or is it talking about someone else with your name? And which article is it specifically? ––FormalDude (talk) 19:48, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
In 1968 I had a part in a movie called IF starring Malcolm Mcdowell and in 1969 in Goodbye Mr Chips starring Peter O'Toole. My name appeares correctly IE Ray Mitchell but when hovered over shows me to be a politician from Canada who I believe is now deceased. Hi. I received a message saying that you reviewed Chad Ryland (an article I wrote) through NPP - I have autopatrolled, so I don't see why that needed to happen. I was wondering why a page of mine was listed as needing to be reviewed. Thanks. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:50, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

I suggest you withdraw this closure. WP:BADNAC stipulates that a non-admin closure is not appropriate when "the outcome is a close call (especially where there are several valid outcomes) or likely to be controversial". Furthermore, in my opinion, your edit history sheds a bit of doubt on your impartiality, as it seems to suggest a social-liberal bias, which conflicts with this RfC. Your feedback on the Pike Powers

Dear FD, thank you so much for taking the time to review the submission on Pike Powers. Could you give me a few specifics to work with: the material is all factual, and the references include The Néw York Times and The New Yorker.

is it the adjectives? The refernces? Can I include obituaries?

thank you again for your time and attention. I appreciate it! Raye Ward Reward3 (talk) 14:01, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

You are not the right person to close an RfC at Talk:Florida Parental Rights in Education Act.

Per WP:ACD#Determining_your_suitability_as_a_closer, you are the wrong person to make this close.[2]. The relevant sentence is For example, if you’ve made major edits in the topic area, or expressed opinions with respect to it, then this may affect your suitability as a closer. You have edited numerous hot-button WP:AP2 articles and participated in discussions. Recent examples include Donald Trump[3], Robert F. Kennedy Jr.[4], and Killing of Jordan Neely[5]. If one goes back, there are plenty more examples, at times including deep involvement. I suggest you revert your close.

If it makes you feel any better, I am also a poor choice to close discussions on articles related to WP:AP2, for similar reasons. Adoring nanny (talk) 21:25, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

That's a pretty broad reading of major edits in the topic area – I've never even edited an article on Florida politics. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:33, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
I'd agree. "Hot-button AP2 topics" is too broad a topic for the rule to apply. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 21:37, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
As I'm sure you are aware, it's a national issue, with DeSantis a potential Presidential candidate. I note that elsewhere on this page, there is another request to withdraw your closure, for similar reasons. The outcome is not obvious from the discussion, so it should be closed by someone with no involvement in American politics. A further problem is that your close depends, in your own words, on whether or not a particular objection is "reasonable." That's a judgment that should be made by an unbiased observer. As further evidence that you are not the person for this one, your top edited page is Talk:Donald Trump with an incredible 299 edits.[6] Adoring nanny (talk) 01:15, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
I didn't make any judgement on what's reasonable, rather I summarized what the RfC made clear was reasonable. My edits to Talk:Donald Trump are over the course of two years, and the RfC was unrelated to Donald Trump. ––FormalDude (talk) 03:36, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Now that you've chosen to involve yourself at the article, surely you can see that you are the wrong person to make this close, and you should withdraw it. Adoring nanny (talk) 13:56, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
AN, I frequently end up involved in articles after making an uninvolved RfC closure. Since they're then on my watchlist, I see problematic edits and revert, or come across sources and add content. Is there any guideline or policy that recommends against doing so? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:15, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
I don't know the answer to that. But note that FD's edits included finding a direction another discussion was "leaning"[7], and the "lean" FD found is in the left-liberal direction. On top of that, FD inserted a quote describing the law as "just wrong".[8] This supports the impression that FD is not neutral. Adoring nanny (talk) 14:31, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
@Adoring nanny: What? The content I added does not say that. ––FormalDude (talk) 14:36, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, I was looking at existing text near to your diff. I'll correct above shortly. What you did do was insert a quote opposing the law.[9] The spaces members of the public share—healthcare facilities, schools, shopping centers, roadways, and even voting stations—may become freighted, charged spaces, where people are suspicious that fellow members of the public will wield the power of the state and bring the weight of the law to bear on their activities. Adoring nanny (talk) 14:39, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
It's not opposing the law, rather it's analyzing possible effects of the law, albeit it does suggest those effects are negative. Regardless, it's from a reputable peer-reviewed journal, and has nothing to do with any of the content from the RfC I closed.
The AN review you submitted appeared to result in no consensus, which means the close stays, so please respect the outcome of Wikipedia procedure. I've accepted the feedback from the review and will take it into account going forward. At this point I don't think it's fair nor recommended for you to continue requesting I overturn the close. ––FormalDude (talk) 14:50, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
I've de-archived the WP:AN discussion. Adoring nanny (talk) 20:37, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Don't misrepresent your actions, you;ve reverted twice within the last few hours: 1st revert: [10], 2nd revert : [11] Red Slapper (talk) 13:27, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

They're on completely different content, so they don't count towards WP:3RR. And the second one is obviously justified, as explained in the edit summary. ––FormalDude (talk) 13:31, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Are you not familiar with what WP:3RR says? I've bolded the relevant part for you: "An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page—whether involving the same or different material—within a 24-hour period.". The first paragraph of the policy on edit warring is "Claiming "My edits were right, so it wasn't edit warring" is not a valid defense." Red Slapper (talk) 13:43, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
My mistake, but you had no valid reason to remove the content I added, so I was well within my rights to restore it, and no experienced editor would consider that edit warring. ––FormalDude (talk) 14:01, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
I quoted you the language of the policy on edit warring. If it is true that "no experienced editor would consider that edit warring" despite the clear language that says it is edit warring, that is a sad reflection on the quality of editors on Wikipedia. I had a valid reason to delete your added content - I read the link you provided and it did not reference the Florida law. You subsequently clarified that the full article does make such a reference, and upon reading it, I agree it can stay.Red Slapper (talk) 14:07, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
RS, you're right about the 3RR point, but FD's edit summary said nothing about 3RR: "I've made one revert of that content at Florida Parental Rights in Education Act, you've made at least three." Unless that's a misrepresentation, it is indeed strange to see your comments here about the edit warring policy. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:15, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
I don't recall engaging you in this conversation, but now that you've butted in, read the top of this thread, where FD says "They're on completely different content, so they don't count towards WP:3RR" Red Slapper (talk) 14:19, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes. To be clear, I agree with you on 3RR, and I'd have given FD the same correction. At the top, you said "Don't misrepresent your actions", but you were misrepresenting FD's edit summary, which was not at all about the total number of reverts. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:55, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from Legaleagle2023 (10:16, 28 May 2023)

Hello I created a page how do i add a photo and keep it updtaed --Legaleagle2023 (talk) 10:16, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Legaleagle2023, nice username, are you a fan of LegalEagle (YouTuber)? To add an image, you must be its copyright owner or have express permission from the copyright owner. Please see Wikipedia:Uploading images. At this point though it looks like your page is an early draft and you should work on getting it ready to publish before worrying about images. ––FormalDude (talk) 10:24, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

 • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
 • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

 • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

 • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello FormalDude/Archive,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Your GA nomination of The Melodic Blue

The article The Melodic Blue you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:The Melodic Blue for comments about the article, and Talk:The Melodic Blue/GA2 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Question from QuakeyWakey (21:34, 29 June 2023)

For one of my edits, it still doesn't display the view count even though it has been a day. Is this normal? --QuakeyWakey (talk) 21:34, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi QuakeyWakey, welcome to Wikipedia! The view count in the mentorship module is a weird thing, not that sure how it chooses what to display. Believe that this is normal because I get same thing as well at times. If you want the viewcount of any page I would recommend pageviews as an alternative. Justiyaya 22:16, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

DYK for The Melodic Blue

On 15 July 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Melodic Blue, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a verse by Kendrick Lamar for The Melodic Blue was leaked before the album's release and went viral as an Internet meme? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Melodic Blue. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Melodic Blue), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi AndrewMatteson, and welcome to Wikipedia! As it stands, your draft article does not appear to pass WP:ORGCRIT, and would likely be declined if submitted for review. You need sources that are independent of the topic in order to establish notability. ––FormalDude (talk) 15:36, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary!

Paul Prestopino draft article

Question from Jesusylucyaguilar on School violence in the United States (08:15, 29 July 2023)

I’ve never joined anything like this, but I do support the LGBTQ I have a son that’s 21 years old and he is gay. He’s had a hard time growing up he’s been through a lot and coming out the closet open him up more but still I don’t know how to explain. This is all so much and he’s in a lot of trouble now with the law for defending himself he can’t help who he is. he loves who he is and I love my son and I just need some support. He feels all alone. I feel all alone he’s about to go to court for defending himself and I’m scared. --Jesusylucyaguilar (talk) 08:15, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

@Jesusylucyaguilar: I'm a Wikipedia mentor–that is I mentor others about how to edit Wikipedia. I can't provide any legal advice, in fact nobody on this website can (see WP:Legal disclaimer). Sorry, but you'll have to seek help elsewhere. ––FormalDude (talk) 01:21, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Checking in

@FormalDude: Hello. Hope all is well with you. My availability to edit Wikipedia has been more sporadic of late. But I just wanted to drop a line to say hello and to note that I appreciate the work you've continued to do on revised guidelines and policies for articles about the Church. I've fully intended to be more involved with that, but have had a few rough months health--wise. Please keep up the great work, and let me know if I can contribute to the relevant discussions in any way. Thanks again. Jgstokes (talk) 06:52, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Hey Jgstokes, thanks for the kind remarks. I'm sorry to hear about your health, I hope things are getting better for you. We'd love to have you at WT:WikiProject Latter Day Saint movement/Sources. ––FormalDude (talk) 08:40, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

August 2023

Regarding this warning on my user talk page about contentious topics, presumably relating to the page Andy Ngo who is a living person closely related to post-1992 politics in the United States. Please review the Ds/aware notice at the top of my user talk page that states:

Regards, Kire1975 (talk) 06:13, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

@Kire1975: I did review it, it does not say that you're aware of articles about living or recently deceased people, which is a different contentious topic area than post-1992 politics of the United States. Feel free to include it though by adding the blp parameter to your template. ––FormalDude (talk) 06:30, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
Done. Thanks. Kire1975 (talk) 06:33, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Going back on your word

With this edit, you said you were going to be "Stepping away" from the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 2024 presidential campaign article. I see you have resumed editing.

You "headed that off at the pass", I believe, by issuing a lame apology and saying you were going to "step away". I will ask that you revert your edit and keep your word. Miner Editor (talk) 20:45, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

If you don't, I will take you to ANI and move that you be blocked from eding articles related to American politics. You are clearly emotionally unfit to be editing such articles. Miner Editor (talk) 21:01, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

I have re-opened my ANI case, sort of. Consider yourself pinged. Miner Editor (talk) 21:41, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

I find your insinuations deeply insulting, and I don't take kindly to threats. Please do not edit my talk page going forward. ––FormalDude (talk) 09:04, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

PragerU closure

Moved from User talk:Jc37

Your closure of the RfC at PragerU seems a bit confusing. The RfC was not about simply whether or not to add text, as your closure seems to imply. It was to decide whether existing text should be reworded or removed. Honestly it's a bit troubling that you closed it without seeming to realize that. Not to mention you barely wrote a sentence of explanation for a discussion that had 146 comments from 45 different editors. ––FormalDude (talk) 04:46, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

I did read the whole discussion. That said, you're right, in that I should have clarified that part better. Thank you for bringing that up. - jc37 04:51, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jc37: Why did you move this to my talk page? Are you going to revise your closure at all? ––FormalDude (talk) 04:57, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
I added some clarification. Thanks again for the note. As is not uncommon for a closer, what may seem obvious when they are writing may not always be obvious to the reader. - jc37 05:05, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying the close. ––FormalDude (talk) 05:12, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
