The Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area, consisting of the KLNP, and a buffer of Loktak Lake (often called "Meitei lake") & Pumlenpat, is nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site in "Mixed" category in 2016, for having cultural importance to the Meitei people since time immemorial. In the same year, the Loktak Folklore Museum was inaugurated, and Loktak Lairembee (film) was produced, that won National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation.
