It was the 13th state election since the foundation of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. The [[Christian Democratic Union of Germany|Christian Democratic Union]] government lost its majority, winning 69 seats of the 70 required. The CDU subsequently formed a coalition with the [[Free Democratic Party (Germany)|Free Democratic Party]] and continued in government under Minister-President [[Günther Oettinger]].
