Threats are not entirely clear but they may be bycatching from deepwater trawling and line fisheries and may also be used for [[cod liver oil]] and [[fish meal]].
The blackfin gulper shark is a distinctive species, with a black mouth and tongue, blackish grey [[dorsum (biology)|dorsally]] with dusky anterior margins to the second [[dorsal fin]] and upper [[caudal fin]] lobe. It has relatively small [[gill]] slits, large second dorsal fin, almost as high as the first, pectoral inner margin elongated, reaching to about mid base of first dorsal fin, trunk [[denticle]]s not overlapping. The upper teeth are similar to the lower, only slightly smaller, also with a strongly oblique cusp.

Northwest Pacific, the [[Xisha Islands|Xisha]] ([[Paracel]]) Islands and off the [[Zhujiang River]] mouth, [[Hong Kong]].
