Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes
* You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week.
* It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
* Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
* There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
* Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script.
* There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this.

Problems
* Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations.

Changes later this week
* There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki.
* A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them.
* The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
* Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it.

Meetings
* You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
* You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes
* Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles.
* A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development.
* Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. Recent changes
* The MonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different.
* Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia.
* Redirect links in Special:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again.

Problems
* You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see if your wiki is one of them.
* MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late.

Changes later this week
* The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 June. Why don’t you let more capable person organize this page? What’s your problem if some people think it’s organized better in an other way? I read your last message and be sure I will do it to make the things change for everybody!!!
I repeat it to you, Marc VDS Racing Team will not be anymore with Honda in 2019, they parted ways, Michael Bartholemy and Marc VDS (the Team owner) said it clear a lot of weeks ago, it will be Yamaha or Suzuki. Morbidelli hasn’t confirm that he will be with them for 2019, just look to the last MotoGP.com free video about the contract riders for 2019, please be open and verify your information, we will talk about the rest after that <!-- Template:Unsigned --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by EVH19845150 (talk • contribs) 09:31, 8 June 2018 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Ernst Schering Foundation

Hey Babymissfortune, thank you for your comments regarding the Ernst Schering Foundation. I fully agree with the issue regarding missing references, I had put a note on this in the talk page of the article - the article is a translation from the German equivalent. I am afraid I lack the references, but the content sounded reliable and is not really controversial, so I think with the notice that the article currently lacks references to neutral sources, it might attract others to provide them.

Regarding the general notability, the foundation was endowed very generously be European standards and the science prize it awards is among the more prestigious in Germany; also, a list of awardees already existed on the English wikipedia, so I think it is justified to explain the underlying art and science foundation with its own article. I hope you will agree and that the article won't end up getting deleted. Thank you! Biophil23 (talk) 08:58, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Reverts

Hi. I saw your numerous reverts to my removal of redlinks. Per WP:AFD/AI#Carrying out the AfD close, if it is found that an article subject is not notable, redlinks are removed in most cases. Your summary of "link needed" or "still playing" is not an explanation for reverting since the content is not being deleted, only the link. Killiondude (talk) 17:16, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

@Killiondude: Yes I know that. But in most of the articles where you removed the link, redlinks are still needed/in practice. If you would scan the basketball teams, all players have wikilinks whether they have an article or not. The links are most important in the templates, to be able to distinguish which player is which. When you removed the link, all that remain is the surname. And people who will be able to see the template might say "who is this Caperal guy?" So yes, sometimes redlinks are still needed. If you really want to remove the link, you maybe should just remove the players' names as well, not just the link, so as to be consistent with the rest of the article. Speedy deletion contested: Voice FM 103.9

Hello Babymissfortune. I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Voice FM 103.9, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not unambiguously promotional. Thank you. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 14:28, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion Contested

Hi, I have contested the deletion of both my pages as I feel they both have a right to be on Wikipedia. The reason you have given of "not important enough to be on an encyclopedia" is invalid as he is a Radio Presenter. If you delete the page using this reason, you may as well delete all presenters.

I ask you kindly to remove deletion tags off both Joshua Dodd and Voice FM as they are clearly within the rules. Bigbrojd (talk) 14:58, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Stub sorting

Hello Babymissfortune,

I noticed you marked an article as a stub using the stub template. Did you know that there are thousands of stub types that you can use to clarify what type of stub the article is? Properly categorizing stubs is important to the Wikipedia community because it helps various WikiProjects to identify articles that need expansion.

If you have questions about stub sorting, don't hesitate to ask! There is a wealth of stub information on the stub sorting WikiProject, and hundreds of stub sorters. NPP backlog drive

Any chance you could give me a rough estimate for what the ratio of redirects to articles was for your reviews during the recent NPP backlog drive? I am trying to work out who did the most 'article' reviews (which will be a separate award to the top reviewers cup and the runner up cup). If you could let me know, that would be great. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 07:15, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

@Insertcleverphrasehere: Sorry for the very late reply. I was busy at school and I had no time to review my patrol log to at least give an estimate. But as you have stated already at Talk:NPR, the bar set is about 1800 articles and I am very sure that I did not review that number of articles (I'm confident I reached at least a thousand though). Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

 • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
 • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

 • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

 • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
 • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Need help with talking to user

I’ve tried to use User Talk:2A02:C7D:B925:5A00:8C:E3C5:7394:36C0 but can’t get through. This user keeps changing edits without reasons in edit summary of Hanggang Saan. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:History/Hanggang_Saan The changes user made are not verified. Basically user is adding last names to characters when it is not true as far as the series is going. User is assuming they will marry their love team. I’ve reverted user’s edits the first time and tried to reach user unsuccessfully. The user changed the edits again a second time, again with no verified source and no edit summary. How can I warn or talk to the user?Pipamidalton (talk) 21:53, 1 March 2018 (UTC) Pipamidalton (talk) 21:53, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

@Pipamidalton: What do you mean as "you cannot reach the user"? I have found the link to his talk page and I have warned him regarding this. Babymissfortune 00:44, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
@Babymissfortune: thank you for doing that. When I try to reach out to an IP editor or any editor, I type User Talk:and the number and that normally gets me to the talk page. But I wasn’t able to do that successfully with 2A02:C7D:B925:5A00:8C:E3C5:7394:36C0. Instead it comes out with no results. Perhaps I’m doing it wrong? But your help is much appreciatedPipamidalton (talk) 06:26, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
Pipamidalton You should have not capitalized the letter T in "Talk". It should be "User talk", not "User Talk", Babymissfortune 07:42, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
@Babymissfortune: i think the same user 90.206.117.29 but under a different IP address is at it again. See recent edits here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/90.206.117.29 same type of edits, adding non existent last names to major characters in the series without verified sources. I checked myself and the edits are wrong. Sounds like a fan rooting for love teams. I tried to warn them but again can’t find user talk:90.206.117.29, no matter if I don’t capitalize the “t” in talk. Your help again would be appreciated. If it continues, I’ll request for page protection. ThanksPipamidalton (talk) 03:34, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Re: Anonymous User 130.105.10.46

Good day Babymisfortune! I've been meaning to reach the administrators of Wikipedia for help regarding anonymous user 130.105.10.46. I saw that you reverted the user's edits and have left message for him to clarify his actions.

I would like to seek help regarding said user because, other than the fact that he removes content without an edit summary, the user seems to be targetting edits I've made. I've created a discussion on the affected pages, Ang Probinsyano and List of Ang Probinsyano guest stars but the user has not responded. It used to be that every time I add a content and reference, 130.105.10.46 would make it a point to remove it, all before 24 hours have passed since my edit, which then would have constituted edit warring. The user's pattern of editing is that whenever a new character appears on the show, either as a regular or guest, the user would add that entry then remove all other entries that I placed, especially references. I'd like to show proof here, sadly, I'm still learning my way around Wikipedia. In lieu of that, I'm respectfully directing attention to the edit history of the affected pages as pieces of evidence for the editing behavior of anonymous user 130.105.10.46.

Thank you! Gardo Versace (talk) 17:19, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Re: anonymous user

Good day Babymisfortune! I'm again asking for your help regarding the anonymous user subject of the discussion I posted on your user page. It appears that after having been warned of the removal of the references on the page Ang Probinsyano and List of Ang Probinsyano episodes without providing an edit summary, the said user did the same again using the IP address 130.105.10.206. As I have mentioned in the previous discussion, I have created started a discussion on the Ang Probinsyano page for the anonymous user to explain the removal of references. There has not been a reply and the anonymous user just keeps on removing references that have been added to peove the veracity of the entries. It is in my opinion that it is the same user doing the inexplicable removal of references as shown by the fact that not only are the IP addresses 130.105.10.206, 130.105.10.46, 130.105.10.170 very similar, they also show a unity of action in that the anonymous user constantly removes all references listed in the page.

The situation is all the more pressing in the case of the guest stars page as it was previously listed as a listcruft. I toiled long and hard to find references that would verify the correctness listed on the page, until the page was removed from the status of listcruft. Yet, despite this, said anonymous user constantly removes all references listed on the page. I humbly seek your help in addressing the situation with said anonymous user as the edits the user does is not only disruptive but counterproductive. Gardo Versace (talk) 15:57, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Kalavani 2

Babymiss, I denied your speedy for Kalavani 2. The context is quite clear, as it explicitly states that it's about an upcoming movie. A1 should only be used if you don't know how to search for more information, such as "He is awesome and his car is blue." In this case, I had no problem at all confirming that this is a real upcoming movie, seeing a handful of promotions and gossip about it.

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

 • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Re: Anonymous User 130.105.10.172

Good day Babymissfortune!

I am posting on your talk page again to seek help for the protection of the entries in the Ang Probinsyano and List of Ang Probinsyano guest stars pages. As I have intimated in the previous discussions I left on your talk page, anonymous user 130.105.10.172 has a habit of removing all wikilinks and citations to both pages without any reason. And even if said anonymous user does decide to out a reason as to why he removes the wikilinks and the citations, it would still be disruptive and counterproductive to said pages as one of the Five Pillars of Wikipedia is that its articles are written from a neutral point of view, which calls for every article to be verifiable. By removing the anonymous user's removal of the citations, the verifiability of the entries on the page is negated. Also, again, as I have intimated in the previous discussions, the same anonymous user has the same modus operandi and switches between these IP addresses: 130.105.10.206, 130.105.10.46, 130.105.10.170.

Very recently, the anonymous user has become even bolder in his modus operandi. A mere 17 minutes after you reverted the edits that the anonymous user made, he again restored his edits; good thing L3X1 again reverted his edits and has likewise left a message on the anonymous user's talk page.

I humbly implore you Babymisfortune to conduct an investigation on the anonymous user, and if you find in your discretion that ot be proper, to sanction the said anonymous user by banning his IP Address from editing. Harsh it may seem, but it has become a recurring problem for the pages. These IP Addresses 130.105.10.206, 130.105.10.46, 130.105.10.170, 130.105.10.172 being identical and there being a unity of action between them, the removal of wikilinks and citations, lead to no other conclusion than that it is the same user performing the same counterproductive and disruptive edits over and over again in the said pages.

I am hoping that redress may be afforded for the anonymous user's repeated offense on said pages.

Thank you! Gardo Versace (talk) 07:35, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

 • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

 • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

 • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

 • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

 • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

 • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
 • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

 • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

 • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
 • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Kelvin Gregorio, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Filipino (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Unnamed section

Your organization of this page is bad, I want to make it more clear to everybody! Put all the Ducati Team together, same for Honda, Yang and KTM — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.170.101.25 (talk) 08:51, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Why don’t you let more capable person organize this page? What’s your problem if some people think it’s organized better in an other way? Morbidelli said, he has no contract for next year (so you put in a false information, Marc VDS has officially parted ways with Honda for your information — Preceding unsigned comment added by EVH19845150 (talkcontribs) 09:16, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

@EVH19845150: How come you're the more capable person if you can't even add a new section properly here and can't even sign his own message? You obviously didn't read my message. If you want to create a change that you think is "better" then create a new discussion so we can fully integrate it to all articles. Also, where is the source about the info you are giving? Babymissfortune 09:22, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Morbidelli hasn’t confirm that he will be with them for 2019, just look to the last MotoGP.com free video about the contract riders for 2019, please be open and verify your information, we will talk about the rest after that — Preceding unsigned comment added by EVH19845150 (talkcontribs) 09:31, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Response to reverting

Sorry about that but you should've edited the total series wins, losses and winning percentage of the team too. You missed that one detail that's why I had to do it.Ralphierce (talk) 09:17, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Autopatrol broken

Please be aware that the autopatrol userright is broken, so new articles by editors such as myself are showing up in recent changes when they shouldn't. Abductive (reasoning) 12:07, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
