==News item about Wikipedia==
If you haven't already seen it, here's an article for mention in the Signpost titled "No, Wikipedia is not colluding with DHS." DHS is the Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. [https://slate.com/technology/2022/11/dhsleaks-wikipedia-no-collusion.html][[User:Smallchief|Smallchief]] ([[User talk:Smallchief|talk]]) 22:02, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
== Hope for RfA ==

I hope that you will make your RfA ([[Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/JPxG]]) go live soon. It has almost been a month since your last edit to the RfA, and the RfA comments here have already been archived to [[/Archive21|Archive21]]. Well, good luck when the RfA gets transcluded! Are you so busy that you forgot to transclude the RfA and follow the red instructions at the RfA? [[User:GeoffreyT2000|GeoffreyT2000]] ([[User talk:GeoffreyT2000|talk]]) 04:57, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

:Before you transclude it, make sure to change "co-EiC" to "EiC" :) [[User:EpicPupper|🥒&nbsp;EpicPickle]] (they/them &#124; [[User talk:EpicPupper|talk]]) 05:06, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
::'''ANOTHER RfA?''' Well, I hope the RfA goes live soon. It's been a month since the last RfA had been [[Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Isabelle Belato|succeeded]], and well wishes for the same result. {{hat|reason=See [[Wikipedia_talk:Wikipedia_Signpost/Newsroom#Copyediting_notes]], because I'm worried about keeping both updated}}
I think the following articles are highly unlikely to change, so can be looked over and approved any time you're ready:

*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/CommonsComix]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Essay]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Featured content]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/From the archives]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Legal certainty]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Opinion]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Book review]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Obituary]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Next_issue/Tips_and_tricks]]
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Pageview compression]]

Articles that are mostly ready are:
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/In the media]]: I worked extensively on this, and with all the towers of edits I made to the Galactica section - people kept pointing out sources and I was the one who largely worked them in - I think someone else would be best copyediting it.
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/News from the WMF]] Publishable, but might get some collaboration on it if we're lucky.
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/News and notes]] - Probably publishable as-is, but giving a chance for another lookover.
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Traffic report]] - Ends at the 18th, which is fine for publication really (19-25 seems a bit much to ask for with a publication date of the 27th), but only mostly ready since, well, y'know, it might have another week?

Unstarted articles:
*<s>[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/On the bright side]]</s> Since it's only one entry, I merged this into News and notes. Unmerge if there's other content?
*[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Recent research]] - I think [[User:HaeB|HaeB]] tends to do this very last minute. No content at time of writing.
*There's no "From the team". That's your call.

I am on vacation and, regrettably, do not possess a computer capable of editing worth a damn. I had thought that maybe I would be able to edit worth a damn on my phone, but this was delusional thinking on my part -- I expect to be home either tomorrow or the day after, at which point I can sprint through all of this stuff at the last minute... :Honestly, if it makes it easier, and someone else can help me (like, do a third to half) with Featured Content - by far the biggest Signpost timesink for me - I'm happy to help with whatever's needed. Just if FC goes badly, I can't do anything else that month. <span style="text-shadow:grey 0.118em 0.118em 0.118em; class=texhtml">'''[[User:Adam Cuerden|Adam Cuerden]]''' ([[User talk:Adam Cuerden|talk]])Has about 8.2% of all [[WP:FP|FPs]]. == Signpost Recent Research ==

This appears to be our bottleneck this month. I'd say wait on it, but you're EiC. It does feel weird to publish something that's supposedly the same as another newsletter without much of the content. <span style="text-shadow:grey 0.118em 0.118em 0.118em; class=texhtml">'''[[User:Adam Cuerden|Adam Cuerden]]''' ([[User talk:Adam Cuerden|talk]])Has about 8.2% of all [[WP:FP|FPs]]. == Title change ==

Any reason for the title change? I rather liked mine and now [[Break Stuff|my reference]] is gone... &#32;<span style="font-variant:small-caps; whitespace:nowrap;">[[User:Headbomb|Headbomb]] {[[User talk:Headbomb|t]] · [[Special:Contributions/Headbomb|c]] · [[WP:PHYS|p]] · [[WP:WBOOKS|b]]}</span> 04:22, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
:I usually redo titles for publication but I can put this one back to what it was. I suspect that the brackets may pose some software issue later on, but whatever. '''[[User:JPxG|jp]]'''×'''[[User talk:JPxG|g]]''' 05:28, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

* A new preference, “Enable limited width mode”, has been added to the [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering|Vector 2022 skin]]. Hello and welcome to our latest newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since October. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

'''Blitz:''' Our [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/October 2022|''' October Copy Editing Blitz''']] focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Seventeen of those who signed up claimed at least one copy-edit, and between them copy-edited forty-six articles. Barnstars awarded are [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/October 2022/Barnstars|'''here''']].

'''Drive:''' In the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/November 2022|''' November Backlog Elimination Drive''']], thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Both target months—December 2021 and January 2022—were cleared, and February was added to the target months. Sixteen requests were copy-edited and 239 articles were removed from the backlog. Barnstars awarded are [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/November 2022/Barnstars|'''here''']].

'''Blitz:''' Our seven-day-long [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/December 2022|''' December 2022 Copy Editing Blitz''']] begins on 17 December at 00:01 (UTC)*. It will focus on articles tagged for copy-edit in February 2022, and pending requests from September and October. Barnstars awarded will be available [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/December 2022/Barnstars|'''here''']].

'''Progress report:''' As of 22:40, 8 December 2022, GOCE copyeditors have processed 357 requests since 1 January, there were seventy-four requests outstanding and the backlog stands at 1,791 articles. We always need skilled copy-editors; please help out if you can.

'''Election news:''' Nomination of candidates for the GOCE's [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/2023/1|Election of Coordinators]] for the first half of 2023 is open and continues until 23:59 on 15 December. Voting begins at 00:01 on 16 December and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under ArbCom or community sanctions) are eligible and self-nominations are welcomed. Coordinators serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on June 30. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, please nominate yourself or any editor you consider suitable—with their permission, of course!. It's ''your'' Guild and it doesn't coordinate itself.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers and best seasonal wishes from your GOCE coordinators, {{noping|Baffle gab1978}}, {{noping|Dhtwiki}}, {{noping|Miniapolis}}, {{noping|Tenryuu}}, and {{noping|Zippybonzo}}.

In {{Diff|Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)|prev|1126573605|Your edit of 02:19, 10 December 2022 (UTC)}} of [[Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)]], you introduced multiple instances of
<pre>:{{cot}}

{{Outdent}}
The whole point of {{tlx|Cot}} is to collapse paragraphs into one expandable horizontal bar, and you probably wouldn't want to do that in a table, even if it's possible. To my surprise, {{tlx|Cot}} tags can be nested, as shown here:

{{cot|A "Cot" with a nested "Cot" inside}}
inside one cot
{{cot|A "Cot" inside another one}}
inside two cots
{{cob}}
inside one cot after closing an inner cot
{{cob}}
Outside all "Cots"

"‎ Replace redirected template (Template:Pageviews -> Template:Annual readership)"

[edit]

Why? normally redirects aren't bypassed * Pppery * it has begun... 04:23, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Pppery: I was going to put an extremely simple template together at the title of the redirect, so I retargeted the incoming links. Upon trying to write my extremely simple template I have discovered that I am probably separated from it by a few dozen hours of learning Lua. So it goes, I suppose. jp×g 05:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And this is why we sandbox first ;-) Primefac (talk) 12:03, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost pages are now categorised by status

[edit]

It's actually really trivial because we already sort them, just needed to add something to put them into categories. https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Template%3ASignpost_draft&type=revision&diff=1120601155&oldid=1120432276 There. Change the category names to whatever you want. D'ye want any other statuses? It currently sorts them as either Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles not yet ready for copyediting, Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles ready for copyediting, or Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles that have been copyedited. I've filtered the first of those categories to only include - well, it's technical how I did it, but basically it checks for "Next issue" in the page name, which removes a bunch of sandbox articles, templates, and long-dead article drafts from old incarnations of the Newsroom.

I haven't made the category pages yet, as there's not much point until they're renamed how you want. MAKE SURE to include {{Possibly empty category}} in the category pages or expect them to be deleted.

Sometimes I forget that I'm one of the only Wikipedians old enough to remember how to do these things. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 21:18, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, by the way, if something has a template that gets filled out to show status or to do something, it can probably be categorised by that status using similar techniques to this. Just need to put the desired category into the right "if" (or "yesno" in this case). Also useful for statistics. If, for example, you wanted to know if people were using the fullwidth=yes option, well, you could just add a temporary category (wouldn't even need to make the page for that category, really), give it a couple days to transclude to everything, get the numbers, and then delete the code putting it into the category Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. [edit]

I've copyedited it, standardised its page name (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Legal certainty) and added it to the list. We could probably put it in as "Opinion", but I'd say that's your call.

In other news, you might want to take a glance at the Essay I wrote, and see if you want it elsewhere (I'd have preferred to do that one as an interview, but, well - did you know I'm the only Wikicup winner never to have their win mentioned in the Signpost? Didn't want to miss this achievement too, and writing it is way easier than complaining about it until someone acts.

I saw some commentary on the Newsroom talk page that someone else has an essay they want to run. If you want to move it to another section, feel free. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 04:14, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:28, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, note you're only half-changing titles. In the Media currently mentions the AI spun off as its title on the page. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 10:47, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On the DHS thing - I think if we pull too much from In the Media, we no longer have a lead story in it. See if there's enough remaining to have I.T.M. work on its own would be my philosophy. Might cause some ghost credits if we're not careful, though, like, I'm not sure if I edited things beyond DHS and Galactica, so I might get unneeded credit in the shortened article. Oh, hey, just noticed, FPC now has enough certainty that I can finish that part of Featured content right after publication of the current. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 10:59, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to our latest newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since October. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Seventeen of those who signed up claimed at least one copy-edit, and between them copy-edited forty-six articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: In the November Backlog Elimination Drive, thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Both target months—December 2021 and January 2022—were cleared, and February was added to the target months. Sixteen requests were copy-edited and 239 articles were removed from the backlog. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our seven-day-long December 2022 Copy Editing Blitz begins on 17 December at 00:01 (UTC)*. It will focus on articles tagged for copy-edit in February 2022, and pending requests from September and October. Barnstars awarded will be available here.

Progress report: As of 22:40, 8 December 2022, GOCE copyeditors have processed 357 requests since 1 January, there were seventy-four requests outstanding and the backlog stands at 1,791 articles. We always need skilled copy-editors; please help out if you can.

Election news: Nomination of candidates for the GOCE's Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2023 is open and continues until 23:59 on 15 December. It's your Guild and it doesn't coordinate itself.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers and best seasonal wishes from your GOCE coordinators, Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Tenryuu, and Zippybonzo.

Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter error

[edit]

The GOCE December 2022 newsletter, as sent on 9 December, contains an erroneous start date for our December Blitz. The Blitz will start on 11 December rather than on 17 December, as stated in the newsletter. I'm sorry for the mistake and for disrupting your talk page; thanks for your understanding. Oh, so false accusations aren't a personal attack, but a snarky response is?

Quite. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 19:57, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NorthBySouthBaranof: I warned the IP as well, but shouldn't someone who has made 33,000 edits know better than someone who has made 49 in the first place? jp×g 20:16, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Those 33,000 edits have taught me that removing a post often causes far more drama than simply responding and shutting it down with a simple, factual riposte. And for that anon to drag in purported ArbCom drama... c'mon, JPxG, you didn't just fall off a turnip truck, they're certainly not a "new" user either. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 20:18, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think "go cry some more on 8chan or wherever you came from" goes a fair bit beyond "snark"; surely, if either of us had said that to each other, we'd have (rightfully) gotten our hides tanned at ANI within the hour. I don't think that the fact of it being some random IP should remove the obligation to conduct ourselves collegially. jp×g 23:15, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When you are ready for RfA

[edit]

Your RfA has been updated to use the "readyToSubmit" subtemplate. So, when you are ready, just enter your acceptance statement in the "acceptance" parameter and substitute the subtemplate as per the instructions. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 00:18, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your thanks

[edit]

Details are on Talk:Twitter Files, but I’m pretty certain the problem was caused by my use of a horizontal rule within my post. The wiki engine must be counting horizontal rules. But, as you can see there, someone actually did purposely delete the post but all the rest seem to be that darned {{hr}}. Greg L (talk) 02:42, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Peace Dove

[edit]
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension.
Happy Holidays. ―Buster7  21:03, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Use care with indented templates

[edit]

In Your edit of 02:19, 10 December 2022 (UTC) of Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), you introduced multiple instances of

:{{cot}}
...
{{cob}}

causing missing end tags and stripped tags lint errors. When you have paired tags like {{cot}} and {{cob}}, neither template should be on a line starting with colon (:), asterisk (*) or number (#), to avoid lint errors. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 20:49, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Anomalocaris: Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea those templates would go wild from being indented... as an idle curiosity, what would happen if they were inside a table (or inside other {{cot}}s)? jp×g 20:58, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The whole point of {{Cot}} is to collapse paragraphs into one expandable horizontal bar, and you probably wouldn't want to do that in a table, even if it's possible. To my surprise, {{Cot}} tags can be nested, as shown here:

A "Cot" with a nested "Cot" inside

inside one cot

A "Cot" inside another one

inside two cots

inside one cot after closing an inner cot

Outside all "Cots"

Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:08, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Contentious topics procedure adopted

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you are subscribed to updates on the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions review process.

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.
