As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 50 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "<code></code>". This will give you the option of using VisualEditor on articles and userpages when you want to, and give you the opportunity to spot changes in the interface and suggest improvements. We value your feedback, whether positive or negative, about using VisualEditor, at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:19, 11 October 2013 (UTC) |

I hardly see any improvement in Rubidium. Please, either learn WP:Manual of Style/Linking thoroughly, or switch your activity to content creation from present sprinkling of the blue paint into articles edited by tens of competent editors for many years. A tag has been placed on :Kingdom of charm requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. |
|||
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. <!-- Template:Db-invented-notice --> <!-- Template:Db-csd-notice-custom --> —Largo Plazo (talk) 00:40, 3 September 2015 (UTC) |

:I do not wish to appear to be incredibly knowledgeable of this matter, because, quite frankly, I am not. The linking to other pages that I did was not intended to deface or ruin the work of those competent editors, and I certainly admire what they did. Wikipedia, however, is intended to be a source of information, and a handy one at that. Linking to other articles allows the reader to follow those links and thus explore Wikipedia, connecting one concept to another, and more fully accessing the enormous bank of information that is this online encyclopedia. I do not feel that my linking in any way hurt the article, and I believe that, in due time, many curious readers will click those links and read about more interesting topics. |

:I do, however, concede that linking to "germany" may be a tad bit irrelevant in an article about a chemical element; if you wish to delete that link, then please do. But I added in a few other links, links that I believe are more pertinent and wish you to keep. In the future, I will limit my linking to more germane topics. But, I ask you, what harm did I do?<small><span class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramendoctor (talk • contribs) 13:39, 23 July 2013</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> |

Because you are one of the main expanders of the article Pac-Man Arrangement, I'm notifying you that there is a proposal at Talk:List of Pac-Man video games#Proposed merge with Pac-Man Arrangement that Pac-Man Arrangement be merged into list of Pac-Man video games. ::WP:OVERLINK is the guideline on what not to link - if an article has a lot of links scattered through its text, the genuinely useful ones will be less apparent to the reader. Like you say, everyday and tangential concepts like "Germany" shouldn't be linked because the reader is unlikely to want to look them up mid-article. The other thing to bear in mind is repeating links; an article should rarely need to link a term that's already been linked earlier in the article. --McGeddon (talk) 12:50, 23 July 2013 (UTC) |

I completely agree. I tried to be mindful of duplicate links, but if I slipped in some, I am very sorry. I usually find that, when I read something toward the bottom of the Wikipedia page, there are many fewer links because all the links are closer to the top. Sometimes (and I just found out this is not allowed, sorry) I add links to words or phrases that have been linked before, but are too far down in the article, away from the previous link. Once again, I'm sorry for my over linking. I do admit the geographical locations were a bit much. Thanks for the tip. |
|||
If you would of put that in an edit summary (say, Update value only, reference stays the same) in the first place I wouldn't of reverted your edit. - <span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS"><span style="color:#800000">FlightTime</span> <small>(<span style="color:#FFD700">open channel</span>)</small></span> 03:35, 29 September 2017 (UTC) |
|||
Also, aside from the geographical links (once again, my bad haha) I tried to keep the rest of my links chemistry-related: oxidation state, the names of different elements, redox, etc. That way, the reader of the page can quickly open up a link to a helpful page while reading it. I don't feel that those links should have been deleted, am I right? <small><span class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramendoctor (talk • contribs) 13:55, 23 July 2013</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> |
|||
:I left oxidation state in there when I reverted your other edits, but let's take a look at the others:- |
|||
:* Germany - "names of major geographic features and locations" per WP:OVERLINK |
|||
:* ions - there actually aren't any other links to the main "ion" page in the article, so this is maybe fair enough in retrospect |
|||
:* caesium - already linked twice earlier in the article |
|||
:* Manitoba and Canada - "major geographic features", again |
|||
:"Ion" is a common chemistry term so may be redundant per "understood by most readers in context" of WP:OVERLINK. But given that the article already links "air" and "atom", it seems fair enough. I'll put a link back around "ions". --McGeddon (talk) 13:22, 23 July 2013 (UTC) |
|||
: Too far down in the article… yes, now you understood something. But you still miss the point of specificity. You should not discreet potential links between chemistry-related and not so. You should discreet between near and specific on the positive side and distant and unspecific on the negative. Look at the example with a mine in Canada. A reader interested in rubidium can also be interested in mines where it is extracted. But s/he unlikely will jump to Canada from the article, and in any case links to the country and province are present at Tanco Mine, where they are (semantically) nearer. I totally agree. Once again, I apologize for that. I now know what to link and I'm really sorry if it caused some trouble for you. I'm one of those people who goes on wikipedia for hours on end, linking from one page to the next. To me, the more links, the better. Sorry for not realizing that was not part of the policy. I still believe links are helpful, but you're right, they are only helpful if they are pertinent. I'll keep them pertinent from now on. Don't you worry. (Eh... sorry about this but I edited a bunch of pages yesterday, and I may have linked to countries on one more of them... maybe Silicon. I'll check and see if I can fix it if someone else hasn't already.) But yeah, to me, this is what a helpful link is: |

1) one that talks about something the reader may be interested in upon reading |

So, theoretically, if there's a link at the VERY top of the page, then I think there should be one at the middle or bottom of the page too. It's just easier that way. Other than that I agree fully with the guidelines. |

You are awesome. It's one thing to uphold the rules, but it's another to do so with the reader in mind, as you do. Once again, I realize how silly it was to link such stupid things as geographic areas. I didn't realize caesium was already linked twice... normally I'm more careful than that. As for "ions," I figured that they were fair game since "air" was linked before, as you mentioned. Trust me, I actually use decent discretion in what I link and what I do not. I tend normally to link chemistry terms that a layman may not understand (for example, "redox" in a page on sodium, which I assume is a pretty well-visited page and thus will not only be viewed by chemists) and other chemical elements (if previously unlinked). There are some fluke links, and I take full responsibility for the problems they caused. I really did not mean at all to come off as haphazardly "sprinkling blue paint" as I was accused of before. I only wanted to be useful. If I have your permission, I would like to continue to spruce up the chemical elements' pages, which I find to be very inconsistent. (For example, the word "isotope" appears on virtually ever page but was only linked in half of the pages I inspected. I proceeded to link the first "isotope" I saw in any that did not contain the link.) But I will exercise more restraint than what I did before. Is that ok? Thanks for the help. |

Also, one more thing. About the whole "one link to a specific page per article" policy. Imagine you are on the freeway. Five miles from your exit, you see a sign saying your exit is 5 miles away. Expecting to see another sign right before your exit, you keep driving... 5 miles... 6 miles... 7. You realize that there was no sign immediately in front of your exit; there was only one telling you it was 5 miles away. If a wikipedia page has a link to another page at the very top of the article, if a reader decides to not click that link and continue reading (or if they do not notice it), and then they reach the middle or end of the document (where the term appears much more, but was not linked because of the single link earlier), then it would be an inconvenience for them to ctrl+f the term and find the one time when the term was written in the form of a hyperlink. Why not just put in one or two extra links, at good intervals, just like well-spaced signs on a freeway? Instead of forcing the reader to manually search the page or just ctrl+f the link (which I do admit is not hard at all), why not just throw in a few more links, a few more highway signs, to keep the reader more informed? As a huge fan of wikipedia and a reader of a great many pages, I think that this would make much more sense than limiting links to one per article. |

Take, for example, the term "isotope" in many chemical element pages. At the top of the page, the term usually appears, such as "this element has X stable isotopes." In most cases, "isotope" exists as a link (if not, I probably made it one). Much later in the article, a separate section about the stable isotopes (in detail) of the compound appears. It would make sense to link to "isotope" again here, for maximum clarity to the reader. Right? Or is that somehow hurtful or inefficient?<small><span class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramendoctor (talk • contribs) 15:17, 23 July 2013</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> |

:WP:OVERLINK says "Generally, a link should appear only once in an article, but if helpful for readers, links may be repeated in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, and at the first occurrence after the lead.", which would support a second link in the body of the article if it seemed helpful. |

:I suppose we're assuming that the typical reader will be reading the article from the top to the bottom, and will only skip ahead if they already feel familiar with the subject - the text of every section is written in that context (we don't write each section as a standalone introduction to the wider subject), and linking is just another part of that style. I'm only guessing here, though. Opting in to VisualEditor
[edit]As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 50 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable
". This will give you the option of using VisualEditor on articles and userpages when you want to, and give you the opportunity to spot changes in the interface and suggest improvements. We value your feedback, whether positive or negative, about using VisualEditor, at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:19, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Kingdom of charm
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Kingdom of charm requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
—Largo Plazo (talk) 00:40, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
