The journal, which is a graduate student-run publication, was established in 1998 by faculty advisers [[David Berliner|David C. Glass]] (Arizona State University) in conjunction with journal editor Leslie Poynor.<ref>http://cie.asu.edu/volume1/number1/index.html</ref> The journal ceased operation at the close of 2006 and underwent revitalization in 2007 at request of George Hynd, dean of the then-named Mary Lou Fulton College of Education.<ref>http://cie.asu.edu/volume10/number4/index.html</ref> Faculty advisors Finbarr "Barry" Sloane (University of Colorado at Boulder) and Sarah Brem (Arizona State University) and newly-appinted executive editors Lori Ellingford and Jeffrey Johnson were charged with the responsibility of restarting the journal. During this revamping period in 2007, the journal was still on a publishing hiatus as Ellingford and Johnson laid plans for creating a staff that would resume in January 2008 and implementing the use of [[Open Journal Systems]] (OJS) software as the new online vehicle for delivering the journal on the web. ''CIE'' published its first volume (Volume 10) since the 2-year hiatus in December 2008.<ref>http://cie.asu.edu/volume10/index.html</ref> |

Since its inception, ''CIE'' publishes one new volume per calendar year, with the exception of 2009. In 2009, the journal began with [http://cie.asu.edu/volume11/index.html volume 11] and finished with [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/view/7 volume 12]. During this year, the journal, which had already been using OJS as a repository to tend manuscripts through the peer-review process, transitioned in Fall 2009 to the use of OJS as the means of delivering published articles. This transition marked the introduction of volume 12--the very first volume to be delivered via the new website interface made available via OJS. This transition also marked the introduction of a revolving publication schedule. Published articles were no longer consolidated into one issue that went live on a particular date that often reflected to conclusion of the academic semester. Instead, since the August 2009 transition of fully using OJS, the journal did and still continues to publish articles immediately when they are complete. These completed articles go live on the website instantly within their specified issue. |
|||
The journal went on publishing hiatus in 2017. From 2018 to 2019 the publishing platform was upgraded and new faculty advisors Leigh Graves Wolf (Arizona State University) and Josephine Marsh (Arizona State University) were appointed. Under the direction of student editor Neelakshi Tewari the journal relaunched in 2020 and has resumed publication. |
|||
After the August 2009 transition to full OJS useage, the former ''CIE'' website was no longer used as the active publishing site. The [http://cie.asu.edu/articles/index.html old ''CIE'' journal website] is still accessible today though [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/archive ''CIE'''s current website archives.] |

In 2010, issues of Volume 13 were published quarterly. [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/view/8 Vol. 13 Issue 1] reflected the ASU Spring 2010 semester. [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/view/9 Vol. 13 Issue 2] and [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/view/10 Vol. 13 Issue 3] reflected the summer months. [http://cie.asu.edu/ojs/index.php/cieatasu/issue/view/11 Vol. 13 Issue 4] reflected the ASU Fall 2010 semester. |

The year 2011 brings ''CIE'' to its fourteenth volume, with issues published in a triad to reflect ASU's academic semesters: Spring, Summer, and Fall. |

History
[edit]The journal was established in 1998 by faculty advisers David Berliner, Jim Middleton, and Gene V.
