Yorkshire template

Sorry Keith. I was trying to use the {{WPBannerMeta}} for the template, if you don't like the changes simply revert it until something that suits the project can be done. —Borgarde^talk 02:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Could you tell me what links go to the wrong place as well, so I can see what went wrong, because I see the template working fine. The Meta template supports the use of -importance instead of -priority. The comment info is still there as well, the Meta template uses it placed at the bottom of the template instead of the quality scale line, which is trying to standardise across the templates. —Borgarde^talk 02:54, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Great Ayton Shops, Pubs & Restaurants website

Dear Keith

I added the Great Ayton Shops, Pubs & Restaurants website as I believe it contributes to the knowledge about Great Ayton. The website is NOT a conventional advertising website but largely a collection of photographs about the inside and outside and of the staff of the establishments. There are a few occurences where what might be called advertising appears but this is not very often. I am the IT Consultant to the Great Ayton Community Archaeological Project whose present 4 year project is to look into the history of Great Ayton. One of the members who looked at my website asked me if I could go back 100 years and make one for 1908. I am also surprised that you removed the websites. The first one I made about Great Ayton shows in photographs lots of views of Great Ayton as it is now. The second one is aimed to advertise the website and does that by selling the features of Great Ayton: Captain Cook; Roseberry Topping; the river etc. I also have YOUTUBES under the name GASBAGSMike for Stokesley, Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire Moors' Dales, and Roseberry Topping - all these I would think should be added to Wikipedia Kind Regards

Thanks for the note. I have added the 3 links to the talk page and ask for comments by others. Looks like they fall under the rich media type of information which is not really handled by wiki. I would wait and see if others think it is appropriate to add them back or not. If others feel that they should be reinserted then I will not remove them again, though others may do so. If they are reinserted then I think that the caption against the links may need clarifying so that people know that the links are rich media type sites. Keith D (talk) 12:06, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

References format

If you are interested in the format of Reference sections, I have been thinking about the format on the "Philip Larkin" page. I asked on the Shakespeare page, because several editors working on the "Philip Larkin" page have been looking to the Shakespeare page, an FA, as an example of excellence. Ortisei

Hi, similar to the request made for Val Gardena, can you provide an opinion for this page request? I'm familiar and have visited this town a few times, and even the local inhabitants use "Ortisei" for basic promotion in English. Icsunonove (talk) 22:39, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

I am really neutral as I have no knowledge of the area, I moved the other article as the discussion was pointing in that direction. I think that on the face of it a move would be appropriate but see what happens when others comment. Keith D (talk) 22:50, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, Septentrionalis made a valid argument, I suppose. Though, if he doesn't like the Google search results, I'd rather he try to improve on them, rather than just say, "wait and see". Another user brings in a lot of personal passion against imperialism, etc. :-) This doesn't help us use on here what is common English usage. Sometimes the whole discussions here about names in this region give me a big headache with all the chest thumping. A quick question. I'm just curious how one manages to do what you did from that site. How does one go about transferring that image to Commons exactly? (I have another photo I'm interested in.) Again, many thanks!Regards,MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:41, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

A bit difficult to explain but here goes.

Locate the image required, I tend to use the OS reference from streetmap to get list of images on Geograph.
Click on image to get it enlarged view
Right-click of mouse and select save-as to save it to your PC
From the page extract the information for the template on commons
- Image number
- Photographer
- Date taken
I normally assemble the template in notepad and paste it into the image box on commons

|Author=<Photographer>

|Permission=see below

Login to commons
Select upload file
Select basic upload form - last but one line on screen
On upload form
- press Browse button and pick the file on your PC for the saved image
- Paste the completed templates into the summary box
- Enter appropriate categories in the category box (you can add them to the bottom of the summary box if you know them)
- Press the upload button

I transferred my first geograph photo to Commons a couple of days ago, Geograph now provide "interested in re-using this image?" which links to jump snippets for Wikipedia, which can then be directly entered in the "already have Information box contents?" link. Yes, I noticed the one-edit only editor there - and I think you might well be right about the sockpuppets. The desperate attention-seeking of a new heading also seemed to give it away somewhat. I wouldn't mind, but it's always the comparison with Manchester that these people moan about, yet in both local authority terms and settlement terms Leeds is larger! I tend to agree, I think that there is probably only a single person involved here, or some one and a few friends. I cannot see how so many IPs and newly registered users coming to a single article with similar thoughts/style would happen, probability is against it. Keith D (talk) 22:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Simply websites

Hi Keith,

Could I appeal to your better nature and ask for the discussions on the York and Harrogate pages about our sites to be removed as they can only be detremental to our sites and in the end we've worked hard on the sites, and its peoples livelihoods at stake. Whilst we had hoped to be linked from Wikipedia as we felt it would have helped the users of the site, we accept that it would break editorial policy.

George Michael

Hello Keith, i see that your are aware of the editing row that is going on at George Michael's article over the mention of his Jewish backround on his mother side dispite it has been edited with a reliable third side source. There are two users called "Ckatz" and "Marc Harris" that will just delete those editings despite anything, and without even discussing it on the discussion page.Was wondering if i could ask you what to do about it. Thanks.

I was aware of it after warning a user for potentially violating on the three revert rule. As Ckatz is an admin they should know the correct way of dealing with disputes. If you cannot reach agreement on the talk page of the article then you could try for a wider audience with a request for comment to see what other editors think on the situation. Hello, Keith... I noticed the IP left a message for you; unfortunately, he/she didn't do the same for me. As far as my involvement goes, this individual (through several IPs) has been more-or-less an SPA with regards to this issue. The IP has repeatedly restored the information despite numerous requests to allow discussion to complete and questions as to its relevance from several other editors. Just FYI. --Ckatz^chat _spy

But the user that you have warned for the violation is still doing it(user Mark Harris).By the way i havea lready talked this through with an editor that in the past has also had questions about it, but then told me that with a reliable source and accordind to Wikipedia's editing policy i can make that mention in the article, and so i did.

Moving / merging article

Hi Keith A new editor created several articles about subsidiaries of a company rather than expanding the existing article, They have now decided it may be betters to have one article for the division (after I suggested it would have been better in the parent co article The Manitowoc Company instead of splintering). Now the editor has moved one article to the new tittle Manitowoc Cranes and now needs to merge the other Grove mobile hydraulic cranes in to it . I said Id ask an Admin (you)to help as from earlier discussions on here / wp-Yorkshire I believe there is the issue of page histories ( C&P looses it ? ) and then the dead bit would need deleting any way. There was a Third article but it got speedy deleted but based on the bits I found initerly in the others I dont think much was lost. - Cheers in anticipation of your assistance (again) - BulldozerD11 (talk) 03:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

There is not much that can be done in this case because they have been changed in parallel and are not the same content. You will have to perform a merge by a cut & paste from one to the other. Then set up the redirect and tag is {{R from merge}} to retain the edit history of the original article. Keith D (talk) 11:34, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Gridref for Attercliffe Road railway station

How did you work this out? When I click through the links to a Google map it shows as beeing about 400 feet to the east. Talltim (talk) 23:05, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

I get the grid reference from streetmap. After clicking on the co-ordinates (I usually check these from Google maps first) from the article select streetmap as the mapping service then select the link at the bottom to convert the co-ordinates. One of the conversions it gives there is the gridref. Keith D (talk) 23:15, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Looks like there is some general problem over the conversions somewhere as others are out as well. I get the same problem with Attercliffe railway station which was the next one I was looking at but have not saved as yet. Keith D (talk) 23:59, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

I have reported the problem at Template talk:GeoTemplate. As a test I tried SX000000 and found it was displaying as SX001000 on streetmap which is off east of where it should be. Keith D (talk) 00:31, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I hardly read the YEP either. But i've lived in Leeds for x-amount of years and have never heard of Bramstan. Bramley yes, Stanningley yes. Bramstan No.

If you posted a Christmas Card to Bramstan Close, Bramstan, Leeds, without a postcode, do you reckon the Royal Mail would deliver it before New Years' Eve ?

Please could you prove that i am an ignormaus by providing a reference to Bramstan as a district.
