Leitmotiv, I believe nobody outside WP talks about it. The New York Times reference in the article has no mention of either Gell-Mann or amnesia. The WP-intern link Gell-Mann amnesia effect goes to M. Chrichton. The content of this effect is thin, and from Crichton alone, who for fun pasted the name of Gell-Mann on it. I took a stab at filling in the citations asked for. I have to go do other stuff now, but the last couple shouldn't be that hard to supply. -w/r/t the naming of quarks, the phrase "Three quarks for Muster Mark" comes at the beginning of book 2, episode 4 of Finnegans Wake.  However, in a private letter from 1978, cited by the OED for the etymology of quark, Gell-Mann writes:

Then, in one of my occasional perusals of Finnegans Wake, by James Joyce, I came across the word "quark" in the phrase "Three quarks for Muster Mark."
