Thrilling, dangerous adventures confront Nancy while on safari in East Africa with a group of American college students. Excitement runs high as the teen-age detective delves into the theft of a fabulous sapphire formed by nature millions of years ago. The mystery begins in River Heights, when one of Carson Drew's clients, Floyd Ramsey, who fashions beautiful and unusual synthetic gems, is accused of stealing the magnificent Spider Sapphire and exhibiting it as his own creation. Mr. Ramsey's enemies blackmail him and, by their vicious acts, try to dissuade Nancy from going on safari to Kenya.

Undeterred by the blackmail of Mr. Ramsey and his scare tactics, Nancy does go to Mombasa and proceeds to investigate the origins and theft of the Spider Sapphire. The original owner, Mr. Tagore, comes under suspicion, but it is agreed that he is an honorable man.

After many frightening chases and dedicated sleuthing, Nancy does find the gem and returns it to its rightful owner, Mr. Tagore. Another subplot is wound up when Nancy finds the long-lost brother of a Swahili folk singer; he'd lost his memory and had been supporting himself as a wood carver. He supposedly was attacked for seeing the theft of the Spider Sapphire
