"We Take Mystery (To Bed)" is a 1982 song by the British musician Gary Numan. Released as the second single from his I, Assassin album, it reached number nine in the UK Singles Chart (the biggest of three Top 20 hits from the album and Numan's last Top 10 hit to date). It holds the distinction of having the shortest chart life of any Top 10 hit ever since the official UK chart was expanded to a Top 75, at just four weeks. Two music videos were made for the song; one being for the American market which begins outdoors with Numan and his band driving through New York in an open-top car before cutting to a studio performance of the song, the other was an entirely studio-based video for the UK market featuring Numan by himself in a variety of costumes. |

The song was written about an ex-girlfriend of Numan's at the time called Debbie. According to his biography, she was at a club with her sister and it was inevitable that he would fancy one of them. Either would then charm him into getting romantically involved before selling their story about him to the press. |

A different version of the song (known as the Early Version) is available as a bonus track on the 12" single (and subsequently on reissues of the album on CD) this early version was recorded in 1981 as part of early sessions for the album, I, Assassin. There is also another early version, which was discovered on the studio master tapes when Beggars Banquet Records remastered the album in 1999, though this has never been released. The extended version features a lengthy fretless bass solo by Pino Palladino. |

Being one his biggest hits, the song has been played frequently on live tours throughout Numan's career. |
