This means Barnaby started in 1941 and retired in 1969. Barnaby Jones is a show for the ages. Demonstrating strong morals and wisdom. His character was delightful but he kept a sharp eye for deceit. I loved the quotes from his teacher or his mother peppered throughout the show. [edit]For what it's worth, the North Amercian DVD of the first season has the word "nigger" edited out on the episode "The Murdering Class". The character Lomax, a character who is trying to frame a black character he hates, is talking to a friend and uses the word - it's blanked out but you can hear the tail end of the word.
....But the language in the article "considered offensive in the 2000's" is a bit mysterious, as it suggests that it wasn't considered offensive when the program aired, and continuously until the present. I humbly suggest that what is meant is that in the 1970s...the word (and similar words) were used on certain shows to give them a "gritty realism" and it was an acceptable use (even though the word was offensive). By 2000, that type of use was no longer considered acceptable. Example -- in the first season of "The Jeffersons"... the George Jefferson character says -- while watching Tom and Helen Willis fight at a party --- that one of them is going to call the other (that word). Such a use was shocking but also helped portray the Mr. Jefferson character as a no-nonsense, experienced realist. No network sit-com today would touch the word.
