[edit]- Strongly Keep As commander of the Bangladeshi Border Guards, he led talks with India to bring back national miscreants, and made arrangements for india to do the same from Bangladesh. The India-Bangladesh militant relationship was affected during his command, and various Bengali news articles carried the news in which it focused on him and is clearly notable according to wiki guidelines. Archnet (talk) 06:07, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Well, according to your link, the subject is a sector commander, which means he was in charge of a smaller region, rather than the whole Border Guard. You are misleading everyone by terming him as "Commander", rather he was "a" commander of a small regional branch of the force. Being a mid-ranked regional commander does not make him notable *at all.* --Ragib (talk) 08:04, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- From the report, it also appears that sector commanders are in charge of the guards in a district, right? Then that would be a very low ranked position even within the border guard force ... --Ragib (talk) 08:06, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- - NO, sector commander means that the officer commands a flank of the whole force in his geographical area (i.e. North West Bangladesh and the guards mean the compounded manpower, footsoldier, classmen, artillery, infantry, drivers, officers, etc. So it is not a low ranked position, but second-in-command to chief who resides in the national capital, Dhaka and leaves day-to-day administration and management to the commanders in different divisions of Bangladesh. The force is more than 70,000 with around 10,000 in the subject's commanded region. After the events of February 2009 which left 77 officers (including the chief Major General Shakil, and all commanders) killed in the head quarters, the whole force was redesigned with new flag, standard, uniform while the country was accumulated into 4 larger sectors, North-east, North-west, South-east, South-west and commanders were increased from initial 6 to 12 to maintain better stability if such widespread chaos ever swept through the ranks. Additionally, instead of a Major general (2 Star Army General), a Lieutenant General (3 Star Army General) leads the force, and added a deputy, a Brigadier general (1 star Army General). In other words, back in the old days, the regional commanders handled most of the 'business' including defending against drug trafficking, illegal poaching of women and children, drugs and arms smuggling and occasional military skirmishes with the Indian Military. Guns&roses (talk) 00:55, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- The BDR (now BGB) is headed by a General and back then, 6 colonels, all sector commanders. Its Second-in-Command, and no that is not a small regional branch of the force. He is the sector commander of Rajshahi (its one of the six divisions of the country) and under each sector are thousands of soldiers and scores of officers. He led the BDR side to resolve the existing border problems under the Indo-Bangla border treaty-1975, resisting BSF's push-in bid to erect a vast barbed wire fencing inside 150 yards of zero line rejecting the Delhi's interpretation of what the border treaty should be. It should also be pointed out that the north east of the sector (Rajshahi) is where almost all of the armed conflicts took place (1975, 1979 and 1985). Besides, he also led talks elsewhere in the country, putting sanctions against vehicular movement on Ramgarh-Ayodhya road in 2005. Archnet (talk) 22:46, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Strongly Keep Not only did the subject command one sixth of the paramilitary force as an army colonel, he was in command of Bangladesh forces in UN West African operations. (Bangladesh the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping forces for which in the same year Sierra Leone made Bangla an official language of the state, when the subject was head of the Bangladesh Army forces there). In a ReliefWeb article, in Magburaka the Sierra Leone UN Force commander commended the sector commander (subject) for the good work his troops were carrying out in the sector. [1]
Most of the articles about him that are in English are from credible news sources. It is more likely that Bengali articles covered him more. Nonetheless, I would like to point out Mr Rajib's inclination on deleting articles about Bangladesh based on his 'hypotheses' and original research as to why 'the subject is not notable given his rank of a non-general, and whether if sector commanders are in charge of the guards in a district and hence not notable'. Does that matter? He personally led talks in many important issues including the 1975 treaty and foreign relationships with UN. Previously, he tried to delete article of Sajeeb Wazed claiming original research he himself does as to why it should not be an article at all. Read more here There have been quite many complains against him as he block's people on here, and do not allow them to upload pictures or make changes. WTF??
He wants to keep most Bangladesh topics in the dark and likes to delete any topic related to the country claiming it is not notable. If this was an American Colonel who accepted and reject treaty terms with Mexico after an armed conflict in which his own soldiers were killed, most moderators would not delete it since it has a lot to do with the maritime history and diplomatic and military issues within the two countries. With Clear India-Bangladesh armed issues and conflicts, it is clear that such articles must be kept as to show how things were dealt with before the whole command was shot and killed in 2009 and how BDR became BGB and how that affects future relationship with the governments of India and Pakistan. Juffylube (talk) 23:26, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Perhaps not necessary to verbally attack the moderator. Just state the facts and support your claims with reliable sources/references and the deletion tag will be removed which is the case for this situation :) Thank you Guns&roses (talk) 00:55, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Strongly Keep I don't know why a sourced article about a military officer is up for deletion. How is this not notable?? He is not mid ranked regional officer but commander of Rajshahi, one of the 6 largest states of the Nation, and second in command to only General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the then chief of BDR (later renamed BGB after the 2009 massacre]]. I think being a career soldier for 30 years for one nation, and influencing treaty outcomes where people both military and civilians died is one heck of a reason to keep this article. The moderator should perhaps tag articles like Joe Engle who only commanded a test flight (not a real flight, A TEST flight, with NO officers or midshipmean/soldiers for a few weeks) for deletion as that is the epitome of non-notable military article. This BENGALI subject has more than 5 ENGLISH sources, where the ENGLISH subject has ONLY ONCE ENGLISH source on himself, i.e. Colonel Engle in his OWN ORAL history. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Is there no conflict of interest there???
This is nothing but a blatant attack on preserving our own (Bangladesh) historically significant events and turn arounds that led us to the current predicament with Indo-Bangla standstill as the 1975 border treaty is still not drafted, even 6 years after the workings of the subject and the now defunct paramilitary force. I suggest the tag be removed as there is no issue with this article, but repeated meddling from the moderator who proposed deletion. BDlove (talk) 00:06, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Strongly Keep Subject was an ADC to Lt Gen Hussain Muhammad Ershad, the then Head of the Army of Bangladesh and subsequent President of Bangladesh and later the Military Dictator. This was confirmed in early Retired Army Officers Welfare Association (RAOWA) publications. A Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism page lists him as a Commandent of Army Workshop, but the above references in multiple verifiable independent, reliable sources makes him notable enough according to #5 guideline in the Wikipedia Military Notability page (i.e. Played an important role in a significant military event, with the Indo-Bengal Border conflicts, death and subsequent Mediation of 2004-2005) and hence under consensus this article should stay. Guns&roses (talk) 00:55, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
