the cooneyites have but died out.i am a member of the original group and this discussion is utterly incorrect-firstly we arent a sect.sects are a group which have a dangerous potential and the meetings do not control people.i am free to remain in the meetings or leave.we are not protestant either and in fact protestants call us dissenters-we are anabaptists.anabaptists believe in adult baptism,staying as close to the bible as possible,plain,modest dress and such like.we meet in people's homes to pray,sing hymns and read from out bibles and discuss the gospel.other anabatists include the amish,the mennonites,brethren and hutterites.we arent as strict as the other anabaptists but very similiar.we use hymns old and new and have conventions during the summer months.our workers are chosen by God and forsake their careers and become like jesus nad the disciples,traveling about preaching and depending on the friends for food and shelter.the workers are male and female and respected.little children address them aunty and uncle and when they stay at peoples' homes often there is a good friendship and the worker is treated like apart of the family.we solve any quarrels and problems with the workers and donate money to areas that may need it.we do not own tvs or radios as they are a bad influence.this is a decision that we cherish.i grew up without a tv and i am glad i did.we do not attend cinmeas or theatres or pubs.instead we meet up a lot and go to the beach,have a picnic,go hiking,have a dinner party,go for a walk,sing hymns or go bowling.we respect other religions yet protestants look down on us and catholics laugh at us.i work,attend university,can decide if i want to be baptized into my faith or not but aparently i'm a member of a cult!?how can that be?we just keep to ourselves and try to obey the bible as much as possible. |

:If you read the messages which had been left for you you will see there is no need to feel insulted. Wikipedia has policies on original research, citable sources, conflict of interest and neutral point of view. I have explained in my earlier message to you how you can correct an article you feel is incorrect with appropriate sources. What you can't do is simply overwrite other edits. As for sects being dangerous - that is one definition of sects; but not the general definition. The Church of England is a sect as is Roman Catholicism. The term isn't meant as a term of abuse but as a generic description. B1atv 16:57, 15 October 2007 (UTC) |

:: Merging the articles for the two sects might cause more confusion than clarity. After more than 80 years of separation, some of the more prominent doctrines and practices of the 2 groups appear to have diverged substantially. Combining the articles (and turning this article into a redirect to Two by Twos) would reinforce a misperception which conflates the 2 groups. As it stands, this article does have a hatnote with a link to the article on the larger group. I do believe that the hatnote might be more clearly reworded, however. There are doctrinal differences between Two by Two-ites and Cooney's teachings, but most of those have yet to be much explored in published sources, at least beyond Cooney's rejection of the Living Witness doctrine—i.e., that salvation comes only though hearing their gospel preached in person by their preachers ("THE PRESENT DAY 2 BY 2 APOSTLES", as one of the Two by Two overseers recently put it in a newspaper advert). I just removed a recent addition to the list: |
|||
== Proposed direction for this article == |
|||
I am suggesting a short article describing Cooneyites since the division in 1928. Either an explanatory note or disambiguation link should indicate that the term in use before 1928 refers to the group described under Christian Conventions. Events prior to 1928 should not be included in this article, to prevent confusion. <br /> |
|||
Concerning Cooneyites since 1928, there are few reliable sources, Jaenen, possibly Roberts. Various primary source may exist - this is an unknown factor<br /> |
|||
Information about Cooney should be added to the Edward Cooney article, and it's to be hoped, much more work could be done there. Cooney is an interesting and relatively important figure in the movement; and that article can also synthesize Cooney-centric material from early days of Christian Conventions through to and including Cooneyites.<br /> |
|||
This particular article also contains some controversial statements and assessments which are uncited. These should be removed.<br /> |
|||
Roberts appears to be a credible source and is published, but may be SPS; definite SPS sources like Kropp should not be used. <br /> |
|||
I also feel it would be much wiser to move all 'Further Reading' and 'External Links' to Edward Cooney, Christian Conventions, and William Irving, simply because there is more critical mass around those articles, and duplication of effort will thus be avoided. I understand that it appears as if Kangaroo Island should be added to the list but the group on Kangaroo Island are actually part of the larger "Two by Twos" group, and the public confusion (e.g. on the part of Reverend Goodes) in still naming them 'Cooneyites' merely persists because of the refusal to use an official name for the church. The split between the "Two by Two" mainstream church and the Cooneyites is detailed right at the top of this article as well as in a hatnote on this article and also in the "Two by Twos" article. That's why I've removed it. |
|||
:Here we go again. Deleting and starting fresh would have been so much easier. I see that you base your opinions in this article on the self-published work of Kropp, a commentator on the movement and prolific biographer of its early leaders. ::Actually Kangaroo Island wasn't a recent addition as I noted in my Revision history of Cooneyites Comment, I'd previously placed it there in 2006! |
|||
:I have taken the liberty of changing the heading, GwydionM. My specific issue is with the lack of citations to reliable sources in the text of the article, not to the list of References. There are only two citations, one to a SPS and one to a record of UK parliament. The goal of WP:V is that anything stated on this page can be easily checked by the reader against reliable sources. : No, merger is a damn fool idea and is the third attempt by "Slofstar" to destroy this article, after two straightforward attempts at deletion. None of it makes any sense whatsoever. Souces are quite good. Overlap is normal. |

::My concern is that this article is just a rehash of SPS, who I believe are mostly anti- this group. Most of the information here is not cited, so its reliability is unknown. Cherie Kropp is a WP:SPS. I suspect that Roberts is SPS but it's almost impossible to obtain this work. In any case, her work is not cited in the article. Finally, there are a number of evaluations of the group contained within the article, again not cited. Observations made as per this version: |

::As online sources are often temporary, I've decided to quote here for posterity & discussion, the small paragraph from Adelaide Anglican St Peter's Cathedral Rev Canon W J Goodes' Evensong Sermon, |

:::"When I lived on Kangaroo Island, there was quite a substantial group of Christians who bill-boarded their loyalty to the gospel by a different life-style: no TV, no drugs or alcohol, and their women wore no make-up and didn't have their hair cut. Everyone could tell who were these people who called themselves simply "Christians" but who everyone else referred to as Cooneyites." |

::Clearly the distinctions between Cooneyite & even this Article's current introductory line states, "In some countries, the term Cooneyites refers to the Two by Twos." Clearly from both the Adelaide Anglican Rev Canon & the Kangaroo Islander outsider population uses the term Cooneyite, not "Two by Twos". ::::Apologies Donama that it's me again, not another with a supplementary POV. I lived on KI 2004-7 & had never heard of "Cooneyites" in my then 39years until I'd been on KI for a few months 2004 then when I started becoming a wikiEditor in 2006, I natural neighbourly had cause to look up the term & had never learned of that other term "Two by Twos". As you've indicated "The Cooneyites are a Protestant sect which split from the Two by Twos, originally called "the Tramps" or "the Go-Preachers" founded by William Irvine, often referred to today as "The Truth" or "Cooneyites"." Then perhaps it would in actual fact be worthwhile asking your extended family left there on KI as to what they themselves would like to see happen in terms of real respect, recognition, resourcing, self determination & empowerment as to exactly how they currently see themselves, "outsiders" see them as a group of Christians and "United Christian Conventions"? <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.11.242.100 (talk) 09:47, 20 December 2011 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot--> |

:::::Some members of the church edited what is now the Two by Twos article a while back and were instrumental in obtaining consensus to rename from "Two by Two" to "Christian Conventions", a name occasionally used in some countries to obtain official status (e.g. for conscientious objection during the wars). Later down the track, a more professional set of general Wikipedia editors changed the consensus to rename it "Two by Twos". The lesson here was that people outside the church (most probably completely unaffiliated and who obviously make up the majority) felt that "Two by Twos" was the more universally recognised nickname for the church, especially as "Cooneyites" is the name for the Cooney breakaway. So I don't think there will be another name change. What I do think can be done is the hatnote at the top of this article be improved, which I'll do now. This article wrongly gives false evidence on my beliefs and as what others refer to as a'cooneyite', I am pointing out that we are a reserved group, not at all hostile as someone tried to say.In fact we get awful hassle from protestants in Ireland, who refer to us as ' dissenters' and refuse to acknowladge us as a genuine church.These protestants resent the fact because we do not tithe and have adult baptism and so on, that we have attracted other protestants.When people are editing this article please consider that the websites they cite as refernces are actuallly hate site set up by angry protestants.many of the stuff they say about us are not true, so please do not give us a bad name.we are a peaceful people,who just keep to ourselves. <small>—Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.16.63.22 (talk) 20:09, 22 March 2008 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot--> |

Hello fellow Wikipedians, |
|||
: I think we should take this gentleman (or ladies) views into consideration. The tone of the article is quite hostile, and it's true that the web sources cited are anti-. Further the source cited says nothing about 'Cooneyites' today. She's actually writing about group in Christian Conventions. Indeed, there is nothing on that page after 1928, which is when the Cooneyites as we know them today came to be. I am curious GwydionM as to what you actually do know about Cooneyites today, and what are your sources?Slofstra (talk) 00:58, 26 March 2008 (UTC) |

Kangaroo Island
[edit]I just removed a recent addition to the list:
I understand that it appears as if Kangaroo Island should be added to the list but the group on Kangaroo Island are actually part of the larger "Two by Twos" group, and the public confusion (e.g. on the part of Reverend Goodes) in still naming them 'Cooneyites' merely persists because of the refusal to use an official name for the church. The split between the "Two by Two" mainstream church and the Cooneyites is detailed right at the top of this article as well as in a hatnote on this article and also in the "Two by Twos" article. That's why I've removed it.
Note: Not that anecdotes count here on Wikipedia but I'm absolutely sure of this because much of my extended family lives on Kangaroo Island (a 3 hour drive and ferry trip away from the Adelaide of Reverend Goodes) and are part of the "Two by Two" mainstream church. Donama (talk) 01:51, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- Actually Kangaroo Island wasn't a recent addition as I noted in my Revision history of Cooneyites Comment, I'd previously placed it there in 2006!

- Revision as of 21:23, 8 August 2006 to be exact, http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Cooneyites&diff=68479566&oldid=48812842
- I was surprised to see it missing after all these years without any mention made here in this Article Discussion page!? Could anyone indicate exactly when it was removed as I've waded late last night through http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Cooneyites&action=history without easily seeing when.
- I accept that it could well have been removed on the basis of Reference:
- 1. Fowler, Matthew --Mifren 21:23, 8 August 2006 (UTC) from Marc Warren, Kangaroo Island, South Australia pers comm not being considered valid or as Donama stated above, "public confusion" thus disambiguation is required however clearly there is a common perception on Kangaroo Island.
- As online sources are often temporary, I've decided to quote here for posterity & discussion, the small paragraph from Adelaide Anglican St Peter's Cathedral Rev Canon W J Goodes' Evensong Sermon,
- "When I lived on Kangaroo Island, there was quite a substantial group of Christians who bill-boarded their loyalty to the gospel by a different life-style: no TV, no drugs or alcohol, and their women wore no make-up and didn't have their hair cut. Everyone could tell who were these people who called themselves simply "Christians" but who everyone else referred to as Cooneyites."
- Equally since that 2006 published pers comm above, http://www.google.com.au/search?rlz=1C1SKPL_enAU413&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=cooneyites+marc+warren demonstrates that other websites now have also published apparently verbatim eg http://everything.explained.at/Cooneyites/
- Clearly the distinctions between Cooneyite & even this Article's current introductory line states, "In some countries, the term Cooneyites refers to the Two by Twos." Clearly from both the Adelaide Anglican Rev Canon & the Kangaroo Islander outsider population uses the term Cooneyite, not "Two by Twos". A future visit to Mitre10 Kingscote, South Australia may help learn more as the owner-managers apparently belong to this group of people identifying as Christian.
- I accept that it could well have been removed on the basis of Reference:
- I also note since 8 August 2006, that Reference:
- no longer exists online so I did a search to see that there are other sources available online elsewhere. Matthew 07:49, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I take the point that "outsider population uses the term Cooneyite, not Two by Twos". In the discussion above there is a proposal to merge the two article which I think is worth, given one is just a branching away from the other. Would anyone else like to weigh in there? - Apologies Donama that it's me again, not another with a supplementary POV. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.11.242.100 (talk) 09:47, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- Some members of the church edited what is now the Two by Twos article a while back and were instrumental in obtaining consensus to rename from "Two by Two" to "Christian Conventions", a name occasionally used in some countries to obtain official status (e.g. for conscientious objection during the wars). Donama (talk) 03:34, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
